I've waited ages for this! Who's going to get it! Hot Shots Tennis is out soon too!
I don't understand why I have had to wait a whole year for the what may be ps2's best rpg next to Dragon Quarter, but it will probably be worth it.
Here's hoping Atlus USA subtitled the fmvs because the Japanese were too stupid not to in the original version.
-
i'm gonna punch your tits and throw you down the stairs
-
I don't care unless it means I don't get to play Persona 3!
-
I finally got around to pre-ordering Persona 3 from Amazon (only $46) the other day.
My Hot Shots Tennis demo came in the mail today, too.
-
I pre ordered the limited edition!
-
no, that's just how excited i am!
:hyper homojapuality 4 life :hyper
-
I pre ordered the limited edition!
There's only one version.
-
when i read they were translating it so the characters would say "himuro-san" and "ananus-kun" i lost most of my interest. maybe reading about other peoples' impressions will change my mind, but until then i'm staying away from this. it's just too much for me.
-
Totally cool.

Are you serious. :-\
Oh well. SMT GAMEPLAY SHALL REIGN SUPREME
-
This is more pathetic than lusting for a sequel to Killzone.
-
here's the gaf thread where that was discussed:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=134161&page=13
The translation is very Japanese-culture heavy. Not just in the -sans or the -tans or whatever, but also in the extensive use of "sempai," things like takoyaki still being takoyaki, Golden Week being Golden Week, etc. This is not a game where it's the English equivalent to what was in the Japanese version, it's the Japanese version in English for the most part.
-
i just got into my SMT groove and now i'm pretty hyped for this.
DDS is fucking incredible. thanks for the recommendation himu
-
Got it pre-ordered and im replaying Persona 1 to get in the mood.
BTW - love those Persona 1 3D dungeons upscaled on the PS3.

haha. you can replay persona 1? SMT is that type of series where the developers make almost every new game an improvement over the rest, making the previous games almost unplayable. It's not that P1 sucks, far from it, it's just that goddamn...P2 is such an improvement that it's ridiculous. f I can't replay P1 at all these days lol
can you give a pic of upscaled P1?

This is one of those games that if you honestly want to pick up at a place like GameStop, pre-order it for the love of God. They're shipping like one to two copies to "sell through" on top of any pre-orders. That's it.
-
I feel sorry for any person buying this game who doesn't know that already.
-
Too bad the US version is missing the real ending, according to Atlus Japan. :-\
-
What you like about it
well i definitely love the setting -- i've always been interested in "dark" anime so this is right up my alley as opposed to the frosty haired japafag shit. the speed of battles is great, the randomness doesn't bug me at all because there's practically no loading. i love the separate leveling for character stats and skills (atma), it's nice that they are separated and you have individual control over your character development.
music is fresh, digging it -- not really into the typical jrpg symphony style. the absence of super-long CG cutscenes is a plus, like you said, it's very gameplay oriented which is refreshing because i usually skip story anyway. but i must admit, the story has drawn me in from the beginning and the sparse amount of story sequences is like a reward after a long hard day of boning. it's challenging and i don't ever feel overpowered, it's great discovering weaknesses and exploiting them with the combo system. great stuff all around.
those teeth titties are hot too.

amazon.com is having a sale on the preorder as well, $46.99 shipped. don't think it's the CE though.

playing DDS kind of turned me off to blue dragon. *sigh* i don't think jrpgs will ever be the same.

There is only one version of Persona 3. Every single copy is the "collector's edition."

sweet, i'm in for that amazon preorder then.

That's what I heard. Which sucks, considering how long it's taken Atlus to translate the game, you would think they would take the extra time to include the new stuff from Fes.
-
I NEED THIS SHIT
edit: the japafag dialogue doesnt bother me tbh. Im ready for some sweet SMT gameplay. VA seems nice from what I heard.

SMT spoiled me. It's nearly impossible for me to play a jrpg that's fruity and shit these days after SMT, but I CAN TRY. I need my Dragon Quest and Blue Dragon fix, okay?!
-
Um...I checked out the site. :( I checked some videos, and the voice acting is HORRIBLE. Completely different from DDS' high quality.
Is it possible to turn the voice acting off?

Himumu why don't you make an official P3 thread for Evilbore?
I am, but there's no reason to make big thorough posts that compiles impressionsand shit like I did at gaf (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109703). EB ain't big enough and there's not enough people interested in P3 to warrant doing such a thing.
-
lookin' forward to this... replayed a bit of persona 2 just to get back into the spirit of all things persona. too bad the artist who made DDS and nocturne didn't make the art for P3 --- not feeling the character designs as much as the previous SMT games
-
I'm digging the character designer for Persona 3, it's a nice change. He's also doing the original character designs for Another Century's Episode 3!

i'm about 9 hours in right now, fighting off the "solids". this dungeon is pretty annoying though, i keep falling down the pit -- by accident most of the time because the red eyes catch a glimpse of me on my blind side. it's been a grind though, i've gained at LEAST 5 levels already and am going to hit the 20 mark soon. but i feel as if my party isn't efficient and that i may be learning the wrong skills to maximize its potential. any tips? as it stands, i'm focusing on offensive elemental spells for the main character, physical attacks for "heat", and healing/ailment spells for the chick.
-
that's an annoying dungeon. the boss fight owns though.
Level 20 is more than enough, if I'm not mistaken. SMT isn't really about the levels. Hit their weak point for massive damage.
-
yea, it's crazy trying to remember all the weaknesses of the enemies, especially when some of them look the same. or those moments where you don't have the right spell for a certain enemy's weakness. the combat is so damn rewarding though, i love it.
-
Okay here's some tips.
First and foremost, have all of your characters learn the mantra line that's their weakness. Why? Because you learn abilities and spells that negate that weakness. When you have finally mastered the entire row, you earn an ability that allows you void and null your weakness if it is ever used on that character.
Let's use Seraph as a good example. Seraph's weakness (if I remember) is fire. For strategy, it would wise to cover up that said weakness as fast as possible, so not to get raped, and also so you can gain the upper hand when enemies are dumb enough to attempt to exploit your weakness. By learning Void Fire and Null Fire or Resist Fire and whatever gobblety gook, you can gain the upper hand when some one uses that spell against Seraph. The first thing you should always do when playing a DDS, or SMT game in general, is cover your weakness. If you have a fire based demon, make it so he can some how learn an ice based protection spell or ability.
Secondly, it's wise - and common sense - to learn your strengths. Let's continue with our Seraph example from before. His innate spell is Bufu aka ice. By learning stronger ice spells, you can tear shit up more easily. What's more, as you go along the ice mantra sets, you'll learn things like Ice Amp and Ice Boost, which propel your ice magic power. Very handy.
Thirdly, and this is just as important as covering your weaknesses, learn strong devour and physical abilities. Alongside weakness mantra line, you should totally look into learning higher level devour and physical attacks. There are many attacks that devour and cause physical damage at the same time, so you don't have to keep hitting an enemy until he's weak and hope your don't kill him and miss your chance to gain Atma Points. Remember, the faster you kick ass, and manage to devour enemies the more AP you get. When you get to the Samsara sewers, I'll tell you about a lil' trick that allows you to get so much AP you can master an entire mantra in one battle.
Use weaknesses! This is key. You will not get far without using them.
Bullets, and human form, are often thought to be a waste since they're considerably weaker than demon form, but remember that humans cannot come under the influence by status effects and some enemies go down way easier with a mere bullet rather than the claw of a demon. Most of those guys are flying enemies, so watch out for them.
Key abilities to learn (ones you should emphasize on getting, if not asap, eventually. use the map on gamefaqs to find out their location and how much they cost):
Weaknesses and their resists - FIRST THING YOU SHOULD GET.
Strengths and boosts + amps - SECOND THING YOU SHOULD GET.
AP Divide - GET THIS IMMEDIATELY. As the name implies, you can divide the ap you get between party members, so you inactives can get shit. This is handy, not because DDS forces you to use certain members at certain times, but because you should really look into mastering a good portion of the grid with most characters before beating the game. If I remember, mastering certain parts (or even, the ENTIRE mantra grid) gets you bonuses in DDS2 at the beginning of DDS2)
Ragnarok - Amazing physical ability
Phys Resist - Will be very handy near the end of the game, along with Phys Drain.
Last Meal - Amazing Devour ability
Blood Bath
Iron Stomach - GET THIS IMMEDIATELY. It basically makes it so you don't get stomach aches after eating your enemies.
Double Slash
Counter - GET THIS IMMEDIATELY. When an enemy hits you, you them back. Extremely important. Your enemies even do this so it's best to even out the playing field.
Dia - GET THIS IMMEDIATELY. Dia mantra line are healing spells. Very very useful, obviously! Likewise, the sister set of healing mantra spells are spells that cure and prevent status effects.
Mudo - GET THIS IMMEDIATELY. Death spell. It's not very useful in the later part of the game because enemies often void, resist, or null it, but early on it's handy, along with it's more powerful version Mudoon - which can kill all enemies.
Hama - Get this about half way through the game.
Void Expel - Get this about half way through the game.
Rakunda - VERY IMPORTANT. Buffs are VERY important in the later part of the game.
Dekaja - :bow
Dekunda - :bow
Marin Karin - :bow
Tarukaja - :bow
Pulinpa - :bow
Makajamon - :bow
Calm Death - :bow
Mutual Karma - GET THIS. GET IT.
The others, that are on the far side are unlocked after killing secret bosses. They aren't necessary but damn are they awesome! They are expensive as FUCK though!
I cannot stress enough how awesome and how important the Kaja's and Kunda's are in later part of the game!
Finally, combos. These can use up an entire turn, but they are VERY handy if you do not have access to the spells or have enough AP to buy them. You can get some higher level magic and stuff earlier using this tactic. As an example, when you have two characters in your party who have learned Dia, simply go to the combo section and they'll use Media. Media is the second strongest healing spell. At the expense of wasting entire turns, you can use higher level stuff early on. Make use of this advantage.

What the fuck? Is this on an upscaled ps3 because I swear it looks better than pics and other videos out there.
-
nice, thanks for the tips. i've somewhat deviated from the paths of increasing my innate strengths in favor of trying out new mantras. but i'll get back to working on those, especially the weaknesses. a reason i haven't worked on getting the right spells to protect my weaknesses was because it's hard to predict when an enemy would exploit them. but i'm guessing it's better to be safe than sorry. btw, i hate charm spells when used against me.
voids are only good once per turn, correct? for the most part, i've been successful at not even using voids, but i'm assuming as the game becomes more difficult, nullifying certain elements is going to be necessary. as far as combos go, what were the more effective choices when you played the game?
i finally beat the solids mission, easily. good thing i equipped void earth, else i would've been matera'd to hell. and gaining level 20 gave me 8 skill slots, which is fuckin' godsend at this point. it just keeps getting better.

:bow ps2 upscaling on ps3.
-
Voids are only good once per turn, yes, but the trick is anticipating your enemy using the attack. It gives you an extra press turn (or two if you are fighting multiple enemies and you didn't completely take away all of their press turns).
As for combos, it's been a while. Check gamefaqs

thanks dude, all this is real helpful -- i kinda want to beat DDS before i get into P3, but i've got another 30 hours to go.

So Double Jump shipped out the guides. Any stores get the guide in yet? I need to snag it asap, because DJ guides get rare as fuck. Even more rare than the GAMES.
But they're worth it. I usually don't buy guides, but Double Jump guides are so DELICIOUSLY awesome that they cannot be passed up.

the guides alone are going for $60 for the older SMT games. i've preordered mine from amazon

The Double Jump guides are the closest thing we get to the really cool guide books they make over in Japan. I don't buy guides, but it's nice to see a company go the extra mile.

A Game Crazy in Seattle.

Going to my Game Crazy TODAY.
-
No wait! It was Wal-Mart, or was it Fred Meyer? No! I think it was Target. Nope, it was definitely Borders.
Yep, Barnes and Noble.
Why don't you just call around and ask?
-
Double Jump books pretty much only go to Game Crazy and Gamestop, dude. At least, where I live. So I have to snag them up right when they get on shelves because typically, they only ship 1 to 2 guides.
-
Double Jump books pretty much only go to Game Crazy and Gamestop, dude.
I was joking, dude.
Call the store before you head over there and then have a heart attack when they didn't get it in.
-
I like to go there myself in this case, because pronouncing the name Shin Megam Tensei: Persona blah blah blah japapapapapa on the phone is just plain awkward.
Plus, Gamestop especially, has the tendancy to have boxes they haven't fucking opened. Usually they will have what you want in that very box. So it helps to come to the actual store rather than calling.
-
Alright folks, I told you I hopefully had something very nice to share, and I do... for the first time anywhere, I've got for you not only the first sample pages from the artbook that'll be included with the U.S. release of Persona 3, as well as a few details on the included soundtrack, but also the very first look at the actual game cover, not just the cover for the overall special edition packaging.

As I said before I got the Double Jump guide. As per usual, Double Jump seems to have done a great STRATEGY gudie and not one full of fluff a la Brady Games. Also, as per usual, Double Jump has gone out of their way to explain the setting and give historical and culture information to make playing the game experience smoother. Since the setting is pretty foreign - what being a Japanese High School and all - and because the game is so knee deep with Japanese culture, including holidays and hang out places, and not to mention horrifics, I decided to be nice and scan the guide's introduction section that goes over the subject. I suggest anyone who gets the game to read over it. It's pretty interesting, and I'm pretty sure that majority of the game will be lost on you if you don't look a bit into it.

The persona series just sucks all kinds of mud butt.
I won't dispute this, because they have aged horribly. The battle system in all three psx Persona's sucks, the whole get certain number of cards for blah blah sucks. The gameplay in general isn't that fun, especially after playing through Nocturne and DDS. Still, they're interesting because of their settings and plot.

LOL, i'm getting mine earlier!
-
It's impossible to beat Nocturne AND dds2 before it comes out unless you play all day. Nocturne is really LONG.
-
well i beat DDS1 in record time... then again, i took 2 days off last week.
-
I don't want you all SMT'd out!!!
-
i read that destructoid article... made the wait even harder. :'(
-
Oh man. I got accepted into the college I wanted to transfer to today. It's in Florida and I have to be there on the 16th to move in. Assuming I drive, I'm gonna miss the release date. Further still, I may miss it anyways because I want to go a day early to check out the town.
I have already paid in full so this sucks ass, but what are ya gonna do? Tough luck. This series is cursed.
I have two options: give my parents the receipt and have them pick up the game and ship it to me, or cancel my pre order, hope the town has a gamestop (because Gamestop is gay and will only give credit for returns) and get me a copy there. That's assuming the store doesn't get 1-3 copies and they're all pre ordered.
Welp.
-
check the gamestop online store locator
-
Thanks.

I like being a valued gamestop customer. I told the gamestop manager my situation and he said he would ship it to me once they got it. Wow, what service. This is better than time they held my Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence: Limited Edition when I was out of town and didn't sell it despite getting only one copy in. I feel special.
-
Congrats, Himuro!! What school are you going to? I won't spread it around, so if you'd feel safer, you can PM me.
-
Not comfortable telling anyone what school I'm transferring to. Sorry.

Yo, Error. Know when we getting gametrailers review?
Im still waiting for that one and the 1up/EGM review. Im surprised no one has dropped a 6/10 type review yet.
...
the wait is fucking torture.
-
The worst reviews (gamernode and gamezone) seem to come from fucks don't like or even know the rpg genre in the frist place.
-
all the big outlets are giving it great reviews though -- that's all that matters for sales really. which i hope it sells a ton of because we really need FES.
-
Persona 2 and SMT:N got great reviews and they didn't sell that well. They create a lot of buzz on the net, but in terms of sells...eh.
P2 was my first SMT because of the reviews it had gotten, I know that.
-
sad, maybe we won't get FES after all. i've converted 2 of my FF friends into SMT geeks the past 2 weeks. people just need to get out of their finalfagtasy comfort zone and try this shit.
-
How'd Odin Sphere sell? That game generated a lot of hype.

Good man, I just bought a Wii off CraigsList
-
hey demi, pick up wing island while you're at it. :lol

odin sphere wears thin after a while... the whole alchemy thing can cause the game to drag if you're not into that kinda stuff. but the levels are quick and the action is pretty fast paced. it's a good pick up & play action/rpg. -- you never have to commit hours at a time to get into it.

I just might if it means one less sale of Persona 3
-
are you mad that atlus didn't send you a free game or something?
-
are you mad that atlus didn't send you a free game or something?
I'd trade this if I got it for free
-
i will never understand you demi. :( but it's okay, i'll still help you w/ co-op achievements.
-
:wub
-
I'm gonna buy a lot of copies on the black market and then flood the used game market with them just to deflate NPD.
-
i got two copies of the guide. one for my own use and one for selling it later at an inflated price!
-
good call, i'm picking up 2 copies of P3 myself.
