It's true. Their conference consisted of them saying for about half of it "Hey, we're gonna go explore these new markets with non-games that appeal to non-gamers. Isn't that great?"
Then about 1/4 of it was them showing the latest franchise retreads in their library, all infected with shitty waggle or stylus horsecrap gimmickry. This was done to keep the traditional "hardcore" fan buying Nintendo shit, all the while preparing them for the eventual day that Nintendo no longer makes anything resembling an actual game, which of course the ninthings will just say is a brilliant stroke of genius since it will make Nintendo more money, and isn't that what matters? Also, they paid lip-service to the idea of supporting online but then completely missed the boat when they left one of their biggest multi-player franchise titles coming out this year decidedly OFFline.
Of course, the cherry on top of this crap sundae was the Wiifit presentation.
So, why is this a bad thing? Well, because Nintendo are probably going to be the market leader as far as install base goes. They are pandering to a demographic that has no interest in actual games with an affordable piece of hardware. Now, I don't really care if Nintendo sells more consoles than MS or Sony. Honestly. The problem arises, however, in that 3rd party devs will cater to the stupid gimmick laden Nintendo consoles and ignore actual gamers pining for product. We're already starting to see this (DQIX anyone?) and frankly it's pretty frightening in it's implications.
So in solution, we should take off and nuke Nintendo from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
-
so far every third party that isn't square enix hasn't really shown interest on the wii, so i'm not worried. i doubt it'll be suddenly getting a lot of support.
either way, i can't believe so many nintendo fans are still supporting nintendo. i thought they were smarter than that.

They are abused spouses. They will go to any length to justify Nintendo's crapulence.

Yes, but you have terrible taste so your opinion is pretty much rendered moot. I mean, you like Shenmue. Shenmue.

-

which franchise
Super Smash Bros. Not like *I* enjoy it or anything, but for them to harp on about how they aren't dissing online gamers and then leave the game that most of their fanbase wanted online OFFline is pretty stupid.
-
I did not watch the nintendo conference, is that game being off line confirmed, or speculation?
-
I did not watch the nintendo conference, is that game being off line confirmed, or speculation?
It's speculation. But they made a big point of saying "We're not overlooking online! Here's a list of all the stuff we have coming out with online play!" and SSB was certainly NOT on that list.
-
Nintendo will always do what they do better than everyone else. That is part of why you saw third party support dwindle on previous consoles and why it probably will continue in the future with the Wii.
eg. where is the Wii Sports killer?
-
This is how it is.
There is Mario, Metroid, Manhunt, SC Legends and Fire Emblem due out on Wii. Typical board fodder reaction ignores games, and responds to Wii Fit.
Gamecube fixed a lot of the issues N64 had, way more third party support and more 'mature' titles, even nabbing Resident Evil. Typical board fodder and gamer media ignores this and sees a purple lunchbox and Mario Sunshine commercial.
It's not like Nintendo never tried to be this idea people have for them, it's just that the people asking for that Nintendo were never going to be satisfied. No offense, but the reactions are distinguished mentally-challenged to me. Why would Nintendo focus on an audience that wants to hate them, that has some sort of weird male insecurity about videogames of all things? You'll buy anyways, because the games are there. Nintendo likes their new market, because their new market is approachable. The new market is profitable, less bitchy and less childish in their reaction. So they ignore you and aim at the mainstream, because they respond to things other than Link in black.
-
Thanks Nintendo
*takes a slap to the face*
Masta, can I have anotha one?
*gives me Ponyz for the DS*
Looks good
-
bububu i want to lose weight HOW DOES I LOSED WEIGHT ON THE PS3 OR 360. HOW.
-
Mario- looks awesome. But does it feature shitty waggle gimmickry? Only time will tell!
Metroid- waggle. Didn't like the first two. Pass.
Manhunt- lol... are you serious?
SC Legends- I can get it on the other systems, where it will look better and not have forced waggle faggotry. Fail.
Fire Emblem- could be good but always liked it better as a portable game.
So we have Mario unless it's waggled, and MAYBE Fire Emblem. Not looking good, chief. And I will definitely NOT be buying a Wii soon or probably ever. I view it as helping the terrorists, who hate our freedom.
The thing is, you're wrong. I want to like Nintendo products, because there are certain things they do well. But they don't seem to want to make real games anymore. Also, you seem to be ignoring the fact that even though they have all those games, they chose to focus mainly on thumping their chests over getting a bunch of non-gamers to buy their console and capped it off with having their main focus of the conference be on trying to attract more of them. But of course you're going to believe what you want to believe- have fun with that.
-

What's the problem with DQIX being on DS? I think handhelds are excellent for RPGs, because they force companies to design more concise games that don't require you to devote a whole chunk of time to play (FFXII, last console-based RPG I played, had spots where there were save points every hour and a half). Aside from maybe interface (touching stuff on the touch screen to select the commands, but I am pretty sure you can select with the d-pad and buttons as well), I don't see any gimmick laden stuff in it either? The Wi-Fi multiplayer? I see that more as a nice side feature.
P.S. Based on what I played at E3, you waggle to do Mario's spin attack or jump through the stars to get to the next world, and you can use the pointer to manipulate background objects.
-
Actually DQIX isn't so bad and will probably be a pretty good game- I have an affinity for classic rpgs. I'm replaying through the Phantasy Star series as we speak.
But if DQIX means that all future DQ main series games will be stuck on inferior hardware, count me out.

For realz
I want the Dragon Quest world to be fully realized on an actual Next Gen console. 360/PS3 plskthx
-
I think that DQX will end up on the PS3. By the time it's ready to come out, the PS3 should have a better install base situation. After this E3 I'm actually pondering getting one (although NOT for KZ2 and MGS3 like everyone else).

I actually didn't touch upon the effects reverberating through the industry, which I should have.

Some guy at gaf said that the gaming industry might be getting into the state of the music industry in 1997 when Britney Spears released her first cd. It sold tons, it was a fun novelty act at first and then the entire mainstream industry started coming out with Britney clones, girl groups, and so on and for years they ruled the waves until they chocked themselves on their own cocks.

The real question is WHY the Wii is selling, since it doesn't have SHIT for software. It's the DS that's the real juggernaut over here.

It's selling because it's very appealing to Japanese people- small, cute and it has a wacky gimmick.

I didnt know you had a blog, Juice :_(

I disagree too. You anti-Ninty folk are higher on the "hysterical twat" meter than Nintendo fans are.

is that any funnier than the amount of FPSs available on the PS3 and the 360? it may not be you ubernerdlings cuppa, but you can't say that Nintendo isn't doing something DIFFERENT.
and ruining gaming while they're at it. ::) fucking chicken little muhfuhs

Shut it, cornhole. It's my duty to hate anything Nintendo does.

You'd fit in well at OA, there's quite a lot of passionate anti-Nintendo people there too. Nice company you're keeping!

lets look at some of sony's future 1st party games.
lair, warhawk, ratchet, uncharted, gt, killzone, littlebigplanet, heavenly sword and singstar.
i see only one fps and alot of variety, the same can be said for ms' i'd say.

-
So you're saying that what Nintendo is doing is GOOD for the industry...
Yes. You ARE aware that competition is a GOOD thing in an open market; right, comrade?
...or the interests of people that don't want shitty, gimmicky non-games taking over the hobby?
See my "chicken little" comment above. I'd rather have gimmicky "non-games" (which doesn't even make sense but hey, keep with the EB groupthink) over the same old same old First Person Shooter any day of the week.
-
REAL TALK, dude. The only console fps I have really enjoyed has been Halo. I'm certainly not who you're trying to criticize.
And I laid down why what Nintendo is doing is BAD for the market in my first post pretty well. You just have to have something to bitch about, Corny.

I can't believe this "Nintendo" company, they are gonna destroy gaming! Keeping on talking on how they want to expand the gaming market, while making gimmicky crap! Look, their system comes packed with a robot, a fucking ROBOT? What kind of gimmick is that? And now look at this... the Power Pad? This company has the audacity to market this product to people who weren't around for the glorious days of Intellivision and Atari, and expect gamers to EXERCISE? Who do they think they are? I've been playing video games for years and so I want the industry to cater to me and other hardcore gamers only, screw the soccer moms, screw girls, screw old people, companies should make games JUST and ONLY for us! Give us our Pac-Man and Space Invaders clones ad nauseum, no more Power Pad, or ROB, or Zapper gimmicks!
But that Super Mario Bros game looks really awesome, admittedly...

SMB was awesome, just like SMG will most likely be. Unfortunately, Wii Fit will sell twice to three times as much as SMG, unlike the short-lived gimmick examples you gave.
Maybe I should just be blaming people. Mainly Japanese people.

I have to make OTHER people not buy it, corny. Because if I don't, and then Nintendo wins this generation all we'll ever have is underpowered consoles with stupid gimmicks and no real games anymore. I'm proposing we form a new Defense Force- the Unbiased Console Warrior True Game Brigade. No ninthings allowed.

See, this is just distinguished mentally-challenged. Nintendo isn't going to ruin gaming any more than butthurt nerds on the internet would be able to "stop" Nintendo.

when MS announces "Scene-IT" as one of its premier exclusives, that's when you know nintendo is slowly influencing other companies to go a similar route -- which means us japafag, western-loving fps, rpg whoring, hard as fuck action-oriented, masochist loving gamer selves are going to get the short end of the stick in the future.
ps3 will follow suit soon... you just watch. at the moment they seem to be more hardcore oriented than 360.

i can see it being pretty fun, but i'm going to scratch my head if this is the direction microsoft is headed. they should stick to XBLA for the quirky, casual shit. awesome casual shit like carcassone :)

I think Sony has the same goal as Nintendo (get more people interested in gaming besides those that are already interested) except they are going about it in different ways. With HOME they are trying to appeal to the Myspacers and Second Life people. It's basically both of those ideas combined into one service. Nintendo, however, is trying to appeal to fitness people, old people, and women.
-
Fuck HOME. It just makes actually launching a game more complicated, it seems.
-

true, but they're still out of the price range of the casual gamer. right now they need to focus on the core to help evangelize the ps3, which is why we're seeing a lot of sequels and familiar genres.
it's really hard to get excited about home, casual or not. i just don't see how it will enhance the online experience. packed-in headsets and the ease of chat invitations would have been enough.
-
Nintendo is not ruining gaming. There will always be demand for more traditional games and if the demand is there companies will fill it. Now, you might never like another Nintendo product again again and some of your favorite companies might spend development time on games that you consider gimmicky and stupid but that's life.
Anyway, back to WoW. Now there's a game that killed gaming by making me lose interest in every other game that's not Fire Emblem, Gran Turismo, or Halo 3.
-
Even Nintendo will run out of gimmicks soon.
-
The hardcore gamer hasn't mattered for a long time... you think all those PS2 sales were from hardcore gamers? A lot of people are preaching "the sky is falling" and so far, I haven't seen anything that proves to me that gaming is anywhere close to being taken over by gimmicks and nongames. Well maybe that's because I am too busy playing stuff like Crush, Etrian Odyssey, Taito Legends, Blue Dragon demo, Eternal Sonata demo, Yggdra Union, and awaiting stuff like Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, and MGS4 to notice this so called death of the games industry. Hardcore gamers love their hyperbole (you get people like dark10x and "if its less than 60FPS I can't play it" or amirox and his 3D graphics on DS are abysmal routine*), it's just getting old to me :P
*yeah, they're not good but they don't hinder my overall enjoyment of the games in the slightest.
-
The Wii is going to be out for one year and already there is two new gimmicky control schemes in place of the Waggle which was supposed to revolutionize gaming.
dude the polar waggle of mario kart is totally different from the traditional cartesian waggle of twilight princess
new spacial mappings = new revolution

you arent missing out. Possibly the most awful presentation I have ever seen In a game. Truly horrible stuff
-
Most of the worries that people have are really not going to be an issue in the future. Just cause Brain Training and Nintendogs sold over 4 million doesn't mean that every game on the DS is a non-game. And interestingly enough, the best selling game in Japan on DS isn't Nintendogs or BT, but rather New Super Mario Bros.
I just don't see the problem when PS2 had its Eyetoy sell like 7 million units, people ever talking about Sony killing gaming. I'm sure a bunch of developers tried to imitate Eyetoy games on PS2, but it didn't cause hardcore games to stop coming. Tetris must be one of the easiest games to make, but that didn't kill the industry did it? The crux of this issue is that the millions of people who buy Mario's, Zeldas, Halos, Metal Gears, Final Fantasies, etc. aren't going to just magically transform into non-gamers.
Just saying if you're going to hate on Nintendo, at least hate on them for legitimate reasons, like making weak ass hardware that'll probably have an affect on competitor's hardware in the future.

Actually, given all the cheap bits of plastic that Nintendo rolled out, they'd be more likely to go to a Wal-Mart tupperware isle and say that.

it'll probably have BC support on PS3 though... hopefully.

My only real complaint about stuff like Wii Fit is that Nintendo certainly does have the resources to make a decent actual game that incorporates exercise and fitness as part of the game experience, but they don't even bother. They just make a shitty non-game wrapper using the most basic-think atari 2600 design level design principles and horrifically dated technology.
It's somewhat insulting to people like core gamers that actually appreciate the nuances of game creation and design, even if we aren't actual practitioners, and the whole effort feels cheap and as inane as the bad budget software sold for $5 near the checkout aisle at Fry's. No one wants to see something like that be successful-and thus copied-in the hobby, and that's why there is so much bitching about the Wii non-game titles.
-
Well put. Somebody asked if I "felt the same way about Yourself Fitness" and the answer is no--because that title (which I've used semi-extensively :-[) has actual production values, lots of music tracks and audio patter, cool unique modes, dynamic workout generation according to user-set goals and feedback, and excellent stat tracking.
I thought to myself, "I might like WiiFit if it didn't use Miis and look like total shit." The degree to which it's been phoned in in the interface and "gameplay" (the bits you show to the player and the player does) is frankly obscene. It's not that it's a non-game. It's that it's a non-ANYTHING. Nintendo's not just saying "it's okay to make software that's not games," they're saying "it's okay to make software that's cheap, disposable, and shoddy." Fuck that.

Really tho - I came to my senses about Nintendo months ago...

you deserve a custom tag for that show of dedication to the cause

nintendo is now total trash, but until third parties take serious notice of wii, the whole phenomenon can easily be ignored. it's depressing to see miyamoto presenting wii fit and hear aonuma hedging on the possibility of another wii zelda -- these guys are, or once were, real talents -- but it doesn't affect my gaming habits in any meaningful way
-
Miyamoto should be fucked up the ass until he can't stand so that he'll start developing games you can play sitting down again
NO HOMO
:lol :lol

we aren't really gonna see the effects of wii success on third parties until next year. as ps3/360 development on first-gen content wraps up, they'll be shifting resources to wii development. :'(

How the fuck is your flagship e3 title Wii Fit. It just boggles the mind that the hobby Nintendo basically created at home, they are destroying it.
But sales talk :(

Resident Evil: Yoga :(

Man, I love how the Wiifans see Wiifit being the flagship E3 title (as Chris stated) as a good thing. Nintendo is actively moving away from actual games and all they can do is laugh it off as concerned gamers (about their hobby being fucked) complain.
Perfect case of Stockholm syndrome? Or just a massive Occult? I don't know man
-
Its crazy, I think Nintendo fans are really the only ones that exibit this. Was it some genetic mutation that took place over the "Playstation Years". The only thing they could harp about were handheld sales...which mutated into some vested interest in the company itself? Its definitely a bit creepy.
I'm a Sony fan but I could really care less about their bottom line as long as they give me the shit I want (same thing with MS). I guess the Nintendo faithful its all about CARING. BLARGH
-
I don't really have a console bias- I have certain types of games that I like to play, and pretty much none of them are found on Nintendo home consoles.
Even I'll admit that the DS is pretty good tho. That's in SPITE of the lame touch shit, not because of tho.
-
Nintendo fans have been going through prolonged Stockholm Syndrome by their corporate masters since the N64 days. They don't like "gaming" as a hobby, but instead "nintendo gaming", which has always been roughly compatible with the values of enthusiast console gamers until the last couple of years (non-games on the DS, and then the Wii).
So the longtime nintendo fanboy has a hard choice-either abandon Nintendo to get the kind of gaming experiences they want-but without the Nintendo branding and characters they love-or stick with Nintendo and hope they "snap out of it" or something, which isn't going to happen and Iwata's conference comments should underscore that.
I think the huge assumption is that third party publishers are going to ramp up for the Wii in droves based off its hardware sales. I doubt that will happen, and we'll see the next "spin" of US/EU 3rd party games next year look a lot like this year's batch.
The A-team development is on the 360/PS3/PC, and the college interns and b-teams are working the Wii. I think that the Wii's different demographics and purchasing patterns pretty much dictate a 3:1 US/EU hardware advantage over the 360 for the A-team caliber investments to really be worthwhile, something that I really don't see ever happening. Now for Japanese 3rd parties, the choices are harder, because unlike the US the hardcore gamer slice of the pie seems much, much smaller.

This is true. Any person that buys a Wii almost never buys a game or pre-orders anything. It's like Wii Sports and an extra Wiimote and that's it! Occasionally, children and Nintendo hardcore will push a "big Nintendo title" like Mario Party, but everything else sells like crap for the most part. The only third party title I've seen sell at all is Resident Evil 4, and that's due to the price point more than anything else.
-
The TC got the title wrong. It should be Real Mothefucking Talk: Nintendo is ruining gaming. :-*

One of my non-gamer friends back east got a Wii a month or so ago, based on the hype and I guess getting to play one at a party or something. She came online and said something like "We've been playing Wii Sports a lot, and we'd like to try something else." I decided to be nice and think of a good recommendation for this person (and her fiance), and really, the only things I could recommend were renting Wario Ware, Monkey Ball, and Rayman. . .three mostly enjoyable games with little content. There is nothing else on the system worth owning.

Did you also recommend Cooking Mama or Mercury Meltdown? If she thought WII sports was fun, she would probably like those two. Usually I would also recommend Zelda, RE4, and Super Paper Mario for a Wii only gamer but they are probably too complicated for gaming beginners. Perhaps your friends can get some GC games since there're so few good WII games right now? New gamers would probably enjoy something like Mario Kart for the GC.
-
Her fiance already had a GC, so I'm assuming he's already got the GC games that interest him.
To be honest, Cooking Mama slipped my mind and I didn't even know Mercury Meltdown existed when I talked to her. I probably wouldn't even recommend Cooking Mama. At most it would be a rental recommendation. It's just a very repetetive, ungood game. From what she said, they were more interested in the multiplayer stuff. . .but they don't like Mario Party.

Thought the Wii hater might enjoy this parody of the Wii fit ad.

they're still video games....
whether someone wants to call a game a video game or not is up to them.... but it's a console, and it has games.
in fact i'm really thankful they're exploring new types of games.
i've played all the genres before... i know what they're like. let's see something new now... thank you nintendo.
The Wii is great for people who want to play a video game for a little bit and then get some work done.
The Wii has been out for a long time now and is still hard to find on the shelf..... it's a great system and a ton of fun.... I'm a gamer and I love the Wii because it has great video games. This doesn't turn me into a non-gamer.

In fact the way Nintendo is doing games right now is what the future of games will be. They will just get more and more interactive on all possible levels.
If anything... the PS3 and XBOX are behind.... for anyone to think that xbox or PS will make another sit-down hold a controller and press buttons type of console is absolutely crazy..... they will go for some type of physical interaction as well on their next one.
So what they have nice graphics.... been there done that, they almost have it life-like.... great... I'm still playing a VIDEO GAME with FAKE CHARACTERS!
Gameplay > graphics any day of the week 100 times over.
Great games are NEVER made by their graphics and that's a fact. It's a perk, not a game defining aspect.
Wii makes great and fun games. Not to say xbox and ps3 don't.... Nintendo simply just shouldn't be ignored because they took a different route...
And Nintendo didn't have near the budget xbox or ps3 had... and people get upset when their system doesn't have some super-processor in it?
uuhhh.... go give them billions of dollars and then they'll make one.

Quoted for all kinds of truth...once HD penetration is there, Nintendo will make a system to take advantage of it.
