60gb discontinued post July.
-
No fucking way. Link?
Stupid move if true.
-
UNBEEREEEAVABLE
-
LMAO so they're just gonna sell this "limited edition"?
-
"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July."
Does Sony really think they can sell MILLIONS of 60 GB units by the end of July? Aren't there like ten metric tons of unsold 60 GB units sitting in warehouses?
No fucking way. Every time they do something good, they shoot themselves in the foot.
-
So the difference between MS and Sony is that MS adds more SKUs, Sony takes them away?
-
The limited edition is the Motorstorm bundle. After that it is just the 80gb version.
So all the PS3s are limited editions? WTF?
-
AHUAAHAUAHAUAHAUAHAUAHAUAHUAHAA
Holy shit, seriously there are NO FUCKING WORDS!
It's amazing how Sony constantly proves that they never let good news last for very long AT ALL.
-
To be fair, there are probably like a full year's worth of 60gb systems rotting on store shelves out there. It's not like they will disappear as soon as they stop making them. They probably have enough stock to at least get them through the holidays, if not longer.

But isn't Sony still supply constrained? ???

I heard they've overshipped units. There is no way they'll all be gone by the end of July, like Mr. Sony Europe thinks.
So, based on this, the PS3 will never drop in price. I bet we'll see a 1 TB model by next Christmas for $600 at this rate!
The average consumer doesn't give a shit about the jump from 60 to 80 GB, they want something that COSTS LESS.

Yeah, that much is true. But god, this is hilarious nonetheless.
-
Maybe this is true, and I wouldn't doubt it at all, but I'm starting to wonder if there is either:
1) Bad blood between SCEE and SCEA
2) Lack of communication between SCEE and SCEA
3) Mr. SCEE is an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about
4) Scare tactic to get people to buy 60 GB models ASAP
Or, maybe the guys in charge at Sony are completely inept and have no idea what the average video game buyer wants.
-
This is ridiculous. Jesus Christ.
-
:lol :lol :lol
-
Oh Sony. Just when you had engendered some good vibes, you go and do this.
-
Actually just to make sure I'm reading that right, they're saying that they will indeed make the 80 GB SKU $599 after the Motostorm bundle ends?
-
Personally, I'm not that concerned about the fake price drops since I already own all the systems. PS3-only gamers might be upset though if the majority of PS3s continue to be sold at $600. I can see even an exclusive title with strong ties to the PS3 like MGS4 becoming multiplatform if the cheaper 360/WII continue to sell better. Publishers' patience with the PS3 have to be wearing thin after almost a year of underwhelming sales.

60gb PS3- no longer in production
80gb w/motorstorm- limited edition
80gb PS3- the new standard, apparently
-
eh, apparently this is a diversionary tactic since they want to sell out the existing 60 GB stock by creating a perceived value, since they cost more to manufacture than the 80 GB ones
then when 60 GB PS3s are just about cleared out of stock, the 80GB pack gets reduced to 499$
it's just awkward for us mainstream Internet gamers to know of this beforehand lol

Keep making those excuses, jotaro.

I don't think the 80GB "pack" will be reduced to $499. Motorstorm will be kicked out, and it'll just be the 80GB console for $499. That's if Sony drops the price at all.

It seems like their way to finally introduce the GS-less PS3s to US shores. Those limited Motorstorm PS3s will only arrive in August, there still are lots of people who will see nothing but 60 GB PS3s at 499 for a few months, probably. Then there's just about no way in hell that the 80 GB stays at 599.
It's been a long while (it was like January 2007) that Stinger had said that the PS3 would be profitable to sell for them at around Christmas 2007 (at 599$), and Blu-Ray diodes which is mainly what was so exorbitantly expensive for them to produce, dwindled in price much faster than anyone expected.

Yeah, I'm starting to think this is what will happen. "Barebones" 80 GB model for $499.
-
You guys can keep dreaming. I told you all this was how it was going to be from day one. This is no different then how they handled the launch SKUs. And for folks that think the 80GB model will go down $100 - keep dreaming. The likelihood is that if it becomes price reduced, if at all, it'll be just $50.
-
This is one hell of a bizarre console generation thus far. There'll be enough console iterations to make even Sega blush.
I imagine this is just an example of Sony wanting to keep up with the Jones' (Xbox 360 Elite 120 GB HDD anyone?) Slippery fucks with these price points. We all know there should have been a $399 SKU with the 20GB HDD.
-
The 20GB SKU doesn't exist anymore. They discontinued it out awhile ago.
However, GameStop does have used and refurbed 20GB PS3s for $369 now.
-
Why does Sony keep fucking up? :-\
-
Yup, it's good as confirmed. From Krazy Kaz himself.

Wow
distinguished mentally-challenged fellows, all of them!

THERE WAS TOO MUCH GOOD NEWS AT E3
IT HAD TO COME TO AN END

:lol Wow... Just when Sony seemed to get a slight bit of good will back... They REALLY don't want their console selling, do they?

Is hardware backwards compat staying at least?
-
Jesus. Right when I start giving them kudos they go and fuck things up.
-
i guess i'll never get a ps3 then. :'( i hope there's a mgs4 pc port.
-
Is hardware backwards compat staying at least?
It'll stay, but you got to wonder how dependable and how good the software-based support.
-
So do I buy a $499 PS3 with hardware emu now?
Or a $599 PS3 with software emu later?
SOPHIE'S CHOICE

this is the most funny shit ever. great work sony.

get the hardware emu man... look at where software emu got the 360.

Hardware emu. Both methods offer basically the same image quality. The only difference is that hardware emu has better compatibility. If you already have a PS2 and you don't live in a shitty 500 square feet Japanese apartment, then the PS3's bc is probably unnecessary. The PS3 doesn't make the games look any better than they do on a PS2 and you have to spend $40 for memory card adapters, controller adapters, etc.

The good thing about the 360's emu is that the Xbox 1 games are rendered in 720p unlike PS3 games which are simply upscaled to HD. The 360 makes Xbox games look much better than they do on a Xbox 1. The drawback is that compatibility is far from 100% although most of the top games are working now. Like MAF mentioned yesterday, RSC2 is still missing even though it's the best Xbox racer.
-
I find it hilarious the way you say "shitty 500 square foot Japanese apartment"
My apartment in Tokyo was 220 square feet. :P

that's my biggest gripe. i played some PGR last night and there were a lot of frame dips =[

SCEA has denied 'inaccurate' reports that its $100 price cut on the 60Gig PS3 is simply a move to clear stock before offering solely the higher priced 80Gig version.
Image A spokesperson for Sony in the US told Next-Gen, "As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future."
Officials at Sony Computer entertainment Europe including president David Reeves had said that the US price would still be $599 because that would be the only model on offer once 60Gig stocks ran out. If true, this would have rendered the $100 price cut a virtually pointless gesture, meaning that PS3 had not been cut in price, but was simply being offered with extra memory and a bundled game.
SCEA has reacted with puzzlement to the European perspective, suggesting that there may have been an incorrect interpretation. The spokesperson said, Those quotes [published by a UK-based game industry website] from David Reeves are not accurate. He said that if they had lowered the price in Europe, that territory would have run out of their current inventory by the end of July.
Previously, a senior PR at Sony in London had backed Reeves statement, confirming that he had been talking about the US market, though the PR later distanced London from the remarks, telling Next-Gen, I believe that is the plan, but SCEA has not formally made an announcement on any timeframe. As it affects the US you should confirm with SCEA.
SCEA subsequently denied the story entirely. However, questions will now be raised about the company's long term plans for the 60Gig version and for its $599 / $499 pricing strategy.

XBox 360's BC is pretty shoddy. Even IF things are BC theyre pretty buggy or suffer odd technical issues.
-
BC isn't a bullet point for me, I have a PS2, I have an Xbox - and I don't ever have the urge to play either.
-
PS3 upscaling to 720 is REALLY nice for the older PS2 games. Not so much for the newer releases as all of those have lots of 'tricks' in them to make them look clean that dont translate well to upscaling.

Maybe I have to try it with a game like GT3. I put in God of War 1 after the firmware update, and the upscaling was unimpressive. The image wasn't resized properly when I select widescreen with 1080p and native 480p actually looks better than the upscaled 1080p. IGN also found that native 480p, in the PS2 games that support it, looks much better than the upscaled 1080p.
I'm like Demi though in that I don't care about BC. As long as my Xbox1/ PS2 don't break down, I'm fine. Even then, I can probably find an used Xbox on ebay and PS2s will still be selling for a long time.

how does hardware EE emulation work in later firmwares
can you choose hardware/software at runtime?
or does one always override the other?
-
60gig death confirmed by kaz :lol
sony's pr work is so amazing.

You don't get to choose anything but the upscaling/smoothing options. From what I"ve read, they look the same anyways except that hardware emulation gives you almost 100% compatibility.

I swear all the Sony execs secretly have a bunch of stock in Nintendo and MS. It's the only rational explanation for this shit!
