It's hard to believe, but every so often the developers at E3 forget that they're talking to a room full of journalists and they say something that they probably shouldn't.
A developer was demonstrating her team's multiplatform game for myself and two other journalists, both of whom happened to have been from Xbox-specific outlets. She jokingly asked if it was ok that we were going to see the Wii version, and the two guys chucklingly assured her that yeah, that was fine.
Picking up the controls, she began sorting through the debug menu to get to the bit of the game that she actually wanted to show us, making idle chitchat as she did so.
"Of course this will be on the 360, too. We love the 360. Hoo, we love it." Pause as she waited for the demo to load. "We love the Wii, too, it's a lot of fun. Playstation, pfffffffft. Gah." One of the Xbox guys laughs at that and she goes on to say how hard it is to "get anything to run on that box."
At that point, the demo was ready to go, and she began to put the game through its paces for us. Another moment of unguarded E3 honesty.

I thought you liked the N64
Oh snap
-
what's with your obsession with that .gif?
-
It's a darky. He hates darkies.
-
edit: this actually WASN'T KOHLER AT ALL. go figure
-
PS3 reminds me of N64 for the following reasons:
-Focus mostly goes to first/second party games, as the number of exclusive 3rd party games constantly shrinks
-More expensive media format that differs from the other consoles on the market at the time
-More powerful system than the competitors, but harder to program for
But there is one big difference between N64 and PS3 - price! N64 was comparable to the PSX on release, both were $200 come Christmas '96 (when myself and many other people made the leap into the PSX/N64/Saturn gen).

That was my first instinct as well.
Oh well, Sony's studios will do a better job of producing games I want to play than Nintendo's ever would. I totally see myself picking up a PS3 sometime this year.
-
399 or bust, i'd never pick it up at 499.
-
I'm getting a ps3 next year. Ps3 has far more games going for it than Wii.
-
The Wii is going to get alot of niche Japanese support (the good kind) besides the pablum it is getting now so it will be worth owning at some point once the ps2 is dead.
I REJECT YOUR VERSION OF REALITY AND SUBSTITUTE MY OWN, SIR.
-
I don't particularly like it either but the fact is it is true that Japanese resources will be shifted towards the Wii and we will be stuck with mimey shit in games that were perfectly fines sans gestural nonsense filling in for perfectly acceptable button presses.
Well, I likely won't be having anything to do with any of that shit. It's a shame that the Japanese are so averse to the 360.

Are they really? Because 360 has a shit load of interesting Japanese games.

What the hell... are you telling me you've never seen sales figures from Japan?

Well, yeah I have, but I meant more or less the developers. Many Japanese developers like Capcom are starting to wisen up and realize that the Japanese aren't going to buy their games either way, so they've started to make a shift to appeal more to westerners. I like that. So even if the Japs don't care for 360, at least the developers who develop for it are nice and smart enough to give us games on it.
-
The only reason they're jumping on board is because the PS3 is doing so bad here in states. They have nowhere else to put their next gen games here in the states.
-
ps3 is doing bad in japan too

ps3 is doing bad in japan too
...which is why production is shifting to the Wii!
-
Mupepe they are jumping on board because Microsoft couldn't have built a better development environment and support system for Japanese development. Devs were all about it before the PS3 tanked.
Eh, it's been obvious that the PS3 would not be an almighty system since they announced the price. Anyone with common sense knew it was not going to sell.

It hasn't yet though. I have seen no Wii Japanese developed games announced recently at all despite it's popularity.

but you've got to be on crack to ignore the installed base. No company is that dumb. It's common sense. It's selling at an incredible rate in Japan ESPECIALLY when compared to the other systems on the market.
-
but aren't the only games selling in japan the non games? Even Wii Sports outsold Zelda didn't it?
-
and you don't think they'll follow suit with craptacular non games? =\
-
I'm just hoping they WON'T.
-
Of course they will. The cost to develop a non-game has got to be so much cheaper than an actual game... and then you factor in that it's on Gamecube 1.3, and well...
It's just a matter of time. Think I made that Nintendo is ruining gaming thread for no reason?
-
triumph, i always thought you hated videogames. since e3 i've been seeing you post quite alot in the gaming forum. what happened?
-

Ha! That's exactly what I was thinking.
-

No, I love videogames. I hate GAF's gaming forum. Bunch of useless wankers having meta discussion. No one talks about games there.
And Billy, I know that. And you know that. But tens of thousands of tarded out Nintendo fans don't seem to care.
-

You mean one of the biggest sensations of the last year (worldwide) outsold a derivative entry in a series that Japan hasn't been totally into for a decade?
Of course they will. The cost to develop a non-game has got to be so much cheaper than an actual game... and then you factor in that it's on Gamecube 1.3, and well...

First off, Wii Sports isn't a nongame, and Big Brain Academy on Wii only sold 200k units or so.
Secondly, DS is way more nongame focused than Wii has been to this point, and Nintendo still has a steady stream of standard games coming out. When is this quantum shift supposed to occur?

But the difference is staggering. On the DS, Nintendo didn't market New Super Mario Bros. considerably less than say...Nintendo Dogs or Animal Crossing. No, they acted like it was a big deal. Compare to that to the Nintendo E3 conference where Mario was given a goddamn 5-10 second look in a game montage, and they acted like it wasn't anything important, but seemed to think that Wii Fit was far more important to every gamer. It's their priorities that worries us. Yes, ds has more non games, but they don't market the non games more than their traditional games on the ds. With the Wii, it's like they're saying,"Fuck Mario and fuck all of these traditional games. Wii Fit is where it's at and if you don't like it, tough luck."

Himuro...NSMB got even LESS air time from Nintendo than Galaxy.

During their 2k6 E3 conference? It was already out by then, wasn't it?

I don't agree with this, at least for the games that are coming out this year. I guess they're just not the type of games that I'm into.

Right. I was referring to the year before that. I don't think it had any airtime during the show at all (cause I just remember the little 40 sec. trailer). I could be wrong, though. Been a while since I saw the 2k5 conference.

2007 and beyond
Echochrome
Wipeout HD
Super Stardust HD
Infamous
Uncharted
MGS4
Haze
Ratchet and Clank 4 (or was it 5?)
vs
No More Heroes
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros.
Metroid Prime 3
When you count that Super Smash Bros. doesn't interest me in the slightest, that brings my Wii game interest to 3, so that makes this 8 vs 3. If ps3 were cheaper, you bet my ass I would get one. Either way, I'm getting one next year.
-
The only PS3 game that's coming out this year that would make me want to buy one is Rachet and Clank. Maybe Uncharted. I want a Wii this year for all the games you listed, plus Trauma Center: New Blood.
-
Forgot White Knight Story.
-
PS2 was hard to program for too, I dont think this suprised developers.

You should read GAF... theres generally at least one new Wii a game a week announced

Shovelware, yes.
-
Nah Im talking new Japanese IPs

The PS3 already has way more third party support than the N64 did. Your comparison fails.
