and the blurb sounds like something the execrable gene shalit would say -- the blurb is not i suppose a high artform, but you don't just add 'brilliantly constructed novel' to a movie ad puffquote. laziness all round!

No way, the blurb uses an EXTENDED metaphor.  She doesn't just say it's a roller-coaster, but explains that there are thrills "around every turn."  Like a roller coaster has turns!
