I can get both for cheap (and with fake GameStop moneys) and used, but which one should I get.
-
demi wouldn't buy the darkness.
-
oblivion
-
OVERLORD by a huge margin, Oblivion is boring
-
Oblivion sucks, except the PC version which can be fixed. I am not ready to make a final judgement on Overlord's quality, but it's not a bad game. Unfixed Oblivion is, however, a bad game.

Explain. I'm downloading Oblivion as we speak. What's all this "fixed" talk?

It's been a long time since I played, but there are mods you can use to fix the crappy interface and others that completely rebalance the game and make the shitty level scaling a workable system. There are also numrous, numerous graphic mods you can install to make the game look better.
Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul was the best game rebalancing mod back when I played. I'd guess it probably still is. I believe the best UI mod was called BTmod, but there may have been another one or two I used.
-
if its the ps3 version get oblivion.
If you only have x360 I recommend overlord.
After playing oblivion on ps3 I can't stand it on x360.
-
As TVC stated, Level Scaling really fucks up the allure of exploration in the game.
When the best armor is only found on enemies and not in chests or dungeon exploration, it really sucks.
-
Shivering Isles > Oblivion
-
For the love of god donīt buy Oblivion. Never played Overlord, but donīt buy Oblivion, please.
-
what's wrong with 360 oblivion
-
Oblivion is a piece of shit. Its not even an RPG. Level scaling means just that, enemies scale to your level an turn stronger, sometimes much stronger than you are. If you are not a Warrior type of character you are fucked, if you use primary abilities you level up, if you level up you are fucked. If you play the game the way you are supposed to play, you are fucked. If you play as a pure Mage or Thief, you are fucked. The game is totally broken.
Plus, there are too many things to do. You may think that is good, but beleive me, if 80 percent of the quest are below average thatīs just not fun. To me this game is not worth it, not even with patches. Bethesdaīs focus on gigantic worlds with 300 sidequests is ambitious, yes, but its that same focus that turn games to be totally broken.

Oblivion is great, and so is overlord. Oblivions latest expansion is very very very good.
-
Shivering Isles costs MORE money though, and OVERLORD is better than both so buy Overlord
-
ps3 oblivion has better load times, but slightly worse graphics and slowdown.
360 oblivion has slightly better graphics and the shivering isles expansion, which, unlike the main game, is actually GOOD.
-
BUY OVERLORD AND ADMIT I'M RIGHT YOU COCK SUCKING HOOKNOSED SWINE
OVERLORD > THE DARKNESS
Besides they are supposed to be releasing a GOTY Edition which comes with Shivering Isles and all that DLC crap.
-
the gold and goty edition crap pisses me off so bad :(
-
You wraaaaaaaaaaang? :-*

STFU

Okey dokey.

Didn't you like it? I remember you making a bunch of threads on gaf jizzing about it.
-
Oblivion truly is an awful, awful game if you can't mod the piss out of it, or (apparently) if you can't bolt to Shivering Isles ASAP.
The three hours of Overlord I have played have been very entertaining, go with that.
-
initial jizzing proved unsustainable over crap auto-leveling and a boring-ass main quest.
-
Overlord looks fun.. i'll pick it up cheap
-
If you don't like the pacing of the level scaling (enemies level up as you level up) then you can lower the difficulty but it's actually very easy to play all the missions on normal or even higher difficulty as long as you make a custom class (Prost made a very detailed description on how to make a decent long-term or short-term custom class and how to be cheap about leveling up fast which I can look it up if you want). The main attraction of the game is playing through the story and being in a living world that isn't trying to throw gimmicky sandbox ideas at you but really make you be a certain type of character. What I don't think a lot of people get about oblivion is that it's not about following the path to the ultimate staff, sword, armor, or shitshiner, it's about making a character that is very unique in every way. It also is very much designed to throw a bunch of quests at you but they're all very unique and don't have to be followed. PC version is probably better though because there's a lot of mods that let you do a lot of cool things and have superjacked up graphics.
The game is not designed to make you follow a certain path. Main quest isn't (good) shit.
Overlord has a demo, it was pretty fun.
What you really need is a game rental pass. You could probably get pretty far in overlord and see if you like the atmosphere and gameplay of oblivion in a week.

In my testing the PS3 version Vs. the X360 version;
- looks better
- runs smoother
- doesnt stop travel for loading studdr like the X360 copy did - makes the horse actually rideable.
I have heard that Shivering Isles will be out on the playstation store eventually. The PS3 version just came out, so I dont think anyone is starving for it.
The game does bore me in many ways - regardless of the platform.
Like GTA - you gotta find ways to make your own fun in Oblivion.
-
No way 360 version looks better, and has less framerate issues around oblivion gates.
-

PS3 version looks sharper, less load freezes and further draw distance/less pop-up....
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/18084.html
Besides the loading and popup issues the differences arent extreem....however since I own both systems, id much rather play this on the PS3 - just like id rather play FEAR and clancy games on the X360...
-
they miss the reduced shadow complexity, missing AA, and massive frame rate drops around oblivion gates and inside oblivion. LoD and distance texture issues and the streaming (load stutter) were fixed in a recent 360 patch.
-
360 version does have the achievments too....thats a factor for many (including me)
I just know that in my eyes, playing the X360 and the PS3 version back to back left my experience feeling that the PS3 version was the best for me....mostly because of the smoothness.....(pop-up/loading)...
-
like i said, a recent patch fixed that. the ps3 is still stuck with old-school stencil shadows, a complete lack of AA, and massive frame rate issues.
-
like i said, a recent patch fixed that.
God dammit - yer gonna mke me go buy it again and check it out.
-
I dunno if id ever use videos online as comparisons

Well - I did try them in person when the PS3 version dropped - I just use them here to try to show what I saw...
If what Drinkey Crow says is true looks like this is another title where I trade in the PS3 rev for the X360 copy.
-
i've actually played the ps3 version more -- i beat the main quest on that version. i'm using the 360 version to play shivering isles.
-
Shivering Isles = OMG
-
Muwhaha ok - I got a used copy of the X360 Oblivion while out at lunch.....
When I get done working at 5 ill give it another play-off back to back.
-
OK - I tested the two versions a bit lastnight.
I havent ridden a horse yet, but the same building/structure pop-up still exists in the X360 version. You will be walking, slightly have the game slowdown and suddenly see a tower/building pop-up in the near distance....
Looking back on this some things I do like about the X360 version...
- The darkness is actually dark and very atmospheric...you NEED to use torches in the first dungeon/sewer level and the deepness of the atmosphere provided by this is great.
- as pointed out above, the shadows are amazing...things flicker in the candle-light etc...
- Like many other games available on PS3 and X360, the X360's GPU hardware driven FX are very impressive. The reflections, the water/reflections, lighting, etc...These are used alot in Oblivion. While they spent time to redo much of this for the PS3 via software, the X360 slightly edges it out in the area of FX.
- Things look a bit more 3D in the X360 version for whatever reason....when I talk to people and zoom in on their face for example, the wall behind them is clearly at a greater distance...this feeling of depth isnt as prevallant on the PS3 version....
- The darkness on the X360 version actually looks like real black 3d space...for some reason no matter how i adjust the gamma on the PS3 game, it looks like flat space you can see in as well as the moonlit areas in the X360 game. Torches are cool but not a "necessary" on the PS3 edition.
Bottom line - the X360 GPU GFX FX ADD alot to the game / The overworld pop-up kinda sucks, and its nice how its a bit better in the PS3 version...
An odd thing - the status/inventory menu in the PS3 game looks a bit better...it looks like its running at a much higher resoluton or something...the box on the left doesnt take up most of the screen like in the X360 game....I dont get it...:(
-
since i played the hell out of oblivion then i'd have to go with that. but i liked the demo of overlord a lot so you might get that.
-
does shivering isles fix some of these flaws or something
-
The level scaling is still there. It has personality, so people actually liked it.
