Regular tv is awful. Watching Batman Begins on it now to test it.

Do you have digital cable? SD stuff doesn't look too bad on it.
-
How do you watch DVDs on your TV and how close to the screen do you need to be to see it?
-
which model?

my dad took my hdtv notes and got a tv

Is the DVD player hooked up to the TV through A/V composite or component cables?
-
Get a video calibration disc like AVIA or go on AVSForums and look up other people's configurations for best results

Composite, of course. it looks decent via composite. we need to get better cables.

I refuse to share a tv with anyone.
I have almost enough money for the hdtv, and then I got fired. Oh well, at least I get 100 - 200 dollars a week working with my father.
I should have my own soon, but it's not going to 46 inches. 32 is my goal.

Dorms? Rent a house with friends?
I can't imagine going to college and living with my parents. Hell, I can't imagine not living right near school.

I commute. It's like 15 minutes away.
I'm transferring to another school anyways.

720p is fine if your TV is under 40 inches. If you have a PS3, thanks to the recent firmware updates, 720p will be fine, especially if your budget conscious.
Plus the DVD upscaling is great too, which I believe is HDMI only. My TV is only used for DVDs, Blu-Ray, and gaming so I would not be able to give you advice regarding cable or satellite options.
