Title: Most interesting films coming down the pipeline this year?
Post by: Ichirou on July 22, 2007, 10:23:49 PM
Just trying to make a list of movies that might be worth watching this year (for any reason...including any possible awful trainwrecks!).

Plz tell me what you folks are looking forward to as well!

- No Country For Old Men: Coen Bros. adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel.  It's one of McCarthy's lesser efforts (I've come to realize this, especially after re-reading Blood Meridian), but it seems like the Coens are being extremely faithful to the spirit of the book, so it should be a very dark ride.

- There Will Be Blood: P.T. Anderson's adaptation of an Upton Sinclair novel.  Will probably be entertaining but overstay its welcome, just like most of his other movies.  Looking forward to Daniel Day-Lewis's performance, mostly.

- El Cantante : J. Lo and her husband Marc Anthony's (dunno if I'm spelling his name right, don't care) vanity project about some real latin singer whose name I don't remember and who I don't really care about.  Probably falls into the "trainwreck" category.

- American Gangster: Directed by Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington reunite for the first time since their performance in the modern sci-fi actioner classic, Virtuosity. Will they able to re-ignite the screen as they did in that film?  We can only hope.

- Charlie Wilson's War: A political drama starring Tom Hanks...being touted as a possible Best Picture contender for the Oscars.

- Sweeney Todd: The Tim Burton adaptation of the musical, starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter (of course...), and Sacha Baron Cohen.

- Eastern Promises: New David Cronenberg film, with Viggo Mortensen.  I didn't like History of Violence (no fault of Cronenberg's, just due to the really weak screenplay), but I will always look forward to new Cronenberg movies.

- In The Valley of Elah: New film by that guy who directed Crash and stole the Best Picture Oscar from Brokeback Mountain.  Starring Tommy Lee Jones.

- Nothing is Private:  New film by Alan Ball (creator of Six Feet Under, writer of American Beauty).  Supposed to be very shocking and risque.

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM

I know nothing about the Jodie Foster flick.

bagofeyes, the summer movie season is over so the big dumb action movies (the better ones, anyway) are mostly over and done with.  Most of the shittier action/sci-fi stuff will be dumped throughout the rest of the year.  The only things left worth looking forward to are the arty arty things.  The only exception I can think of is The Bourne Ultimatombomb.

Is it too much to hope for a Japanese release?  :-\

Blade Runner has a fanbase in Japan so I think we will probably see it come out here eventually.  Or if it comes out on Blu-Ray, Japan and the US are the same region.

My Blueberry Nights, the English debut of Wong Kar-Wai, is my most anticipated film of the year.

There's that 3:10 to Yuma remake. Trailer looked neat.

all those movies are gay.

And none of them star Nick Frost.  Coincidence?

3:10 to Yuma looks great.  Christian Bale plus Russell Crowe plus Western.  How can it go wrong?

Do you honestly think I'm looking forward to stuff like El Cantante?  I just want to compile a list of notable shit, be it good or bad.

Yup. I'm looking forward to seeing the film, but I really don't know what to think of it.

I've heard of exactly one film in the first post, and I think that is cause someone posted a trailer on here.
