It's a SURPRISINGLY great game. The series ends up returning to Xenogears-levels of greatness. It's seriously hard to find any fatal flaw in the game, save for its difficulty level which is a bit too easy. Nevertheless it's got awesome pacing; indeed, I can't recall the last game that prompted me to finish it as fastly as Xenosaga Episode III did. It's one of the best console RPGs of last generation, and one hell of a ride.
The new boost system works well, once in a while it simply gives you a supplemental turn which you can use on your character of choice. The boss fights are excellent and very epic. The music, while not as catchy as Mitsuda's efforts on the original, is still phenomenal. The dungeons are good and well-designed, without ever feeling too tedious or too easy. The mech designs and animations are some of the best ever seen on PS2 this side of Zone of the Enders 2.
There was a very convoluted space opera story to wrap up, but Monolith has managed to do it well. It's all very enjoyable and thrilling, and it doesn't feel incomplete or nonsensical. They've included an encyclopedia which adds tons of details on every character, every term, every location... you could easily spend a few hours reading it all.
Give it a try and you'll be gladly surprised.

crap it sux shut up. xenogears would have sucked totally if not for the ost

Where's that Super Paper Mario picture again? :lol
-
No thanks

you don't even want to know how infinitely familiar I am with the third opus
-
No thanks
But you treasure the Shadow Hearts series. I've tried to start the first one about five times so far and it just weirds me out within ten minutes every time. Now I'll get serious with it.
Let's see how your game tastes stack up.

yes. it is awful and pregnant with the devil baby spawned of its own pompous narrative. it is fanservice for the sort of limpdick college freshman shut-in who thinks wedding his animu sexuality to nietzche references is somehow meaningful.
also, this must be a troll, given that nobody save himumu thinks xenogears was a good game.
-
Hell no.
Drinky: I didn't say that Xenogears was a good game, but I still like it.
-
I enjoyed Xenogears when it first came out, but I was a stupid teenager back then and didn't know any better. I also liked Dragon Ball, House of Pain, and Quentin Tarantino movies. People grow, people change.
-
So Himuro, you don't mind all the hours invested in Xenosaga 1 and 2's narratives going to waste? :lol

This. I was 17 when I played Xenogears. If I played it now, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't. My rpg tastes have completely changed since then.

What is that supposed to mean? What weirds you out more than Xenosaga?

i liked a lot of shit games when i was a teenager. ff4, for example.

i can't think of a single thing in shadow hearts that's creepier than MOMO, chaos, or Jr. Or Shion's dialogue in general.
-
Meh, I went back into Xenogears a few months ago. It has its flaws, but overall it still a good, memorable RPG IMO.

Xenogears isn't awful; Xenosaga is satan.

So it's as terrible as Xenogears, then? Thanks for the warning.

It still plays very differently. The pacing is MUCH better.

Joachim's dancing? Maybe? It's a little weird. The whole Bible stuff in XS3 is really fucking crazy

Agreed, for some reason I was able to overlook Xenogears' flaws (and there were many) and came off enjoying the game after all that was said and done... Xenosaga I just thought was absolutely terrible, with some of the poorest pacing in RPG history.
