One of the HEAVY HITTERS for the PS3 is finally out in playable form for the PEOPLE to play.
At least I think it is.
What does evilbore say?
GO

:hyper
-
I'll play it and tell you how GoW was better.
Despite Nariko being female, GoW still has more boobies.
-
i don't get how blocking works. appearently there's not button for that? kev, expand on this issue plz
it seems like it's a pretty short demo but the qte's are...weird. for instance the rope walking scene, you're only using the x button and you don't even have to press a button to make her jump, she does it automatically. maybe it was the difficulty, i dunno, but it was weird though.

Blocking is based on what kind of attack hits you. If a blue attack is coming, you neutral to block. If it's an orange attack, activate power stance and neutral. If you're in ranged mode, you can't block. It's a fairly forgiving system that does offer some depth.
The QTEs are not traditional QTEs. It's not press the button once and move on. You have to mash X when the button moves up and down...it's like Track and Field "run as fast as you can."
How are you playing it, bud?
-
i'm not :lol
jim linked to a gametrailers video of that demo.

Uhhhh lol, God of War and other games do that. Dunno if you are trying to paint this as unique.

I'm comparing it to Shenmue's QTEs, but it's true that GoW has them. I think it's different in GoW though since it's a little more obvious that's what it wants you to do. The button indicator doesn't go up and down in the game, but the right of light surrounding the button pulses.

whats the verdict kev? i'm stuck at work, fuck!
-
I like it a lot. It's a lot of fun. Apparently it's an older build of the game than even the e3 build though.
-
Maybe it's the E306 build?
-
It's more recent than that. It's missing stuff that TTP says is in the e3 07 build, like v-sync and some effects. LOL SONY.
-
Just got home from house hunting, and the download is all done. Time to try it out!!
I like it, but it's not without fault. I've yet to figure out the blocking mechanism, and why the hell can't you jump!?!?
-
There's no jump. Why do you need a jump? They've designed it without jump in mind. You can activate aerial combos in other ways. 8)
As for the blocking, I explained it above.
-
I need a blocking tutorial, I'm just not getting it. :dizzy
-
Wow, um, they're going to double the frame rate right?
-
I had a feeling this game would bomb...
It seemed pretty obvious. Id rather see people hype lair then this game.
-
I blinked and the demo was over...
-
From CAG:
"Heavenly Sword for $49.97 at FamilyVideo.com
Use Coupon Code NEWPGMEM to take $5 off for new members (code is verified as working) or Coupon Code NEWMEM3F to take $3 off for return customers (I have not personally tried this code yet, but it should work)."
I ordered Ninja Gaiden Sigma from FV, and it arrived about five days after it released for only $46. Just placed a pre-order for HS.
-
liked it, not a fabulous killer app, but certainly a reasonably good game nonetheless.
i dont get all the people bashing it for sorely lacking in depth when compared to stuff like God of War or Ninja Gaiden
it doesnt seem like it attempts to succeed them... instead, it really felt to me like an hommage to old-school 2D beat'em-up where you just side scroll through linear areas
I get extremely tired of all those 3D action games at the third person where you always have to scour mazes and figure out which switches to flip and which puzzles to solve to progress anyway... linearity has certain advantages
and I LOVED most of the cinematography, it reminded me of Another World at times
definite rental

not to derail the thread, but god of war's fighting depth goes as far as mashing square

Exactly, and I think Heavely Sword actually has more depth than that. The stances definitely change things up, and you're constantly reacting to what the enemies are doing. I liked the demo as well. Can't wait to see how they cleaned things up for the final release.
I believe this is the GDC demo, which would mean it's definitely an old build.
-
Mondain, it doesn't have the depth of God of War?
uh, what?
-
the framerate whore in me hates it. the action gamer in me likes it a lot. if polished, this game will turn out to be pretty good.
i'm really diggin' the instantaneous switch in cinema-camera mode when you pull off some moves, it puts you at the forefront of the action. it's also very detailed and in-game which is impressive. the QTE is pretty lame and boring in the demo, so i hope it gets more difficult in the final release. all in all, i may jump on that familyvideo preorder. i think this is a game i will enjoy. AAA? not sure yet, the demo was horribly fuckin' short.
-
I really like this game, I just don't understand how to block yet. I keep getting fucked up by large groups of enemies.
-
I for one am shocked, SHOCKED, that Heavenly Sword might not be everything Sonybots promised me and more
-
This demo was pretty bad. I held back the bile on my impressions on GAF, but even if they have fixed all the technical issues (and some of the non-technical ones), this game has a loooooong way to go before it's noteworthy for anything.

Hahahaha

i shall try this tonight and report back.

how play magazine of you
-
You'd be better off playing god hand for half and half an hour and god of war for another half. Take what you like from those two games, remove it, and imagine what you would be left with.
:bow god hand

I didn't want to start shit over a demo that is from last year. I figured it was fair to mince words.
-
So after figuring out how to use the different stances and utilizing the motion controls to perform aerial combos, I'm liking the game a whole lot more. Game still could use some polish, but it was fun.
-
The blocking system sounds like a 3D Ikaruga. I never really was interested in this game before, but after reading some impressions-I warmed up to it. I think I shall get a PS3 in December. I need my action game fix. :hyper :hyper :hyper

The blocking system sounds like a 3D Ikaruga.
That's how I started thinking about it. It's going to take some time to get used to (not sure if that's a good thing, though).
-
Sony am dumb. Why release an old demo that has technical issues? Way to cast the game in a negative light when there was no need too (release a current Demo, like one at E3).

I'm wondering the same thing.

Seems like Kotaku recieved a more robust Demo from Sony
http://kotaku.com/gaming/justintv-kotaku/the-complete-second-level-of-heavenly-sword-283378.php
They are playing the game live. Sucks that Sony keeps jamming their heads up their collective butts. I mean, how could they not have realised releasing an old demo was bad?

especially giving it to kraptaku, which is currently playing the game in a 2" window caked with glare.

I just got around to playing this earlier and loved it.
The controls clicked for me right away..I am use to the dual stick move/dodge system from Genji.
I will buy this ASAP.
It looks damn good too....i beat a guy up with kicks in close quarters against a wall, and then hung hus limp body over the wall as if he was passed out from drinking....
Anyway - this game lives up the the hype total for me.
-
ouch on the controls and visuals -- 15 fps HURTS. still, it's kinda fun in a visceral way, and those vistas are a knockout,
-
Why an ouch on the controls?

Genji? Why would you play that game enough to get used to the controls? You just became the anti-Demi for Evilbore. Even remotely liking Genji is 100 times worse than Wilco's love of the Darkness. I haven't played the Darkness but it can't possibly come close to the shittiness of Genji.

The framerate was decent in the 1st battle but it got really bad in the 2nd one. I guess the 1st battle was smoother since the view is further away and therefore less polygons are being rendered. However, the textures and overall image quality are excellent. LOL though at the SDF's claims of fixed 30fps and gameplay/visuals beyond anything that the 360 is capable of.
-
The first Genji wasn't that bad. The second one... :-X
The PS3 Genji wasn't the first one? Was the 1st one on the PSX? The PS3 game was ass. They were selling it in the bargain bins in Asia for less than $20 new. I still have no idea why it's being sold at full price in the US.
-
ps3 genji isn't bad really.
I also buy a ton of stuff, so I am much more tolerable.
Genji on ps2 plays more like an advanced onimusha warlords. Genji on ps3 plays more like heavenly sword (just not nearly as good)
I'd say genji ps3 deserves a 7.0.
-
I'd hate to see what games get a 6 on your scale.
Boo hoo hoo
just come to terms with the fact that people like different stuff than you do.
-
Advent Rising > Genji

Genji PS3 is terrible. The first level was maybe a 7, but it was all downhill from there. Waaaaaaaay downhill.
