Why not pick up Persona 3 and join in on the discussion?

I'll probably end up doing that. I've just about had my fill of VP:2 (just grinding at this point in that game and have 2 more bosses left to go). I'll either play P3 or WA5 next, but I'll definitely get to both.

I can't wait to read all of the newcomers surprise at the spell names when this game comes out.

"Why doesn't this game have more simpler spell names?! Bufularaham? Mudoon? Terakaja? What the shit is all this gibberish?!"

It'll be so awesome.

That is one thing I disliked about Nocturne, but I'm coming from an FF background. Something like Kuwabara to lower opponents' agility is difficult to get used to at first. :(

Haha. That's one of my favorite things about SMT: the spell names. They're just so awesome. One of the longest running MegaTen fan questions has been "what is the greatest SMT spell name?"

It's obviously Mudoon.

Never seen an SMT get such high scores from places like EGM. I mean, when you consider that Atlus is considerably less rich than other companies like EA or Square Enix or whatever, and P3 managed to pull those scores...that's impressive. two 9.6's without moneyhats or console fanboy bullshit? Impressive.

Never played the Megaten games, so I went to wikipedia for a description of the game.  It seems the gameplay is divided in two parts.  You are playing a bunch of teenagers living in a high school, at day you do quests and thinks associated with the school (which is code for "millions of fetch quests") and at nights the teenagers fight demons.  All through the course of the school year.

Sounds more like an anime, not a rolepaying game.
Title: Re: The best console rpg series of the last generation finally gets recognition
Post by: Error2k4 on July 29, 2007, 02:13:09 PM
you do more ropleplaying in p3 than in all of the FFs/DQs combined.

you dont do quests at daytime. you have 3 categories Academic, Courage, Charm, depending on how well your rank is on those categories you open up new commu/social links. commus is the way for you to gain access to more powerful personae in the game. of course you can fuck up in a commu and not gain any persona.

the role playing aspect of p3 comes from the fact that the game offers freedom on how to make you own decisions. say for example you hit night and you have a text the next day at school, so you have a choice either say 'fuck off' to school and go kill some demons or be a good boy and study for the exam you have next week... or another example can be some of your friends (in the game) invited you to the dance club but that day you also you have practice with the track and field team.

Now thatīs sounds more like Roleplaying-decisions and consequence.  Too many teens though.

yeah. what was i thinking?

i'll get started on vampire rain, hour of victory and tenchu Z.

seriously, obviously, it's based on taste. duh? i don't understand this whole generational leap thing. the only time i really felt a pressing need to abandon ship was in the 8 to 16 bit transition.

Not just this year...PS2 has easily the most, and best games of any console out there...none of the next-gen consoles even begin to compare.  I feel no need to upgrade to PS3 or 360 (though I'm slightly tempted by the latter) for at least the next three or four years.

PS2 graphics are ok but Wii graphics are shit - that's the argument I don't get.
for me it's because i just spent $250 on the damn thing. it seems lame to spend $250 on the damn thing and get something you already have and have had for years and years, technologically.

it sounds funny, but when i was playing zelda TP, if it had just come out for gamecube i wouldn't've criticized the graphics, but playing it on my brand new overpriced funbox, i was like BARFFFFFFFFF

Seriously, your bias is crazy.   Forza 2 has been the only universally recognized AAA game on the 360 so far this year but the 360 has had far more B+ games than all the other systems combined.  You almost piss me off enough to make a joke about curry.   >:(

I'm a busy guy, B+ games don't exist.

I also don't count:
First-person shooters
Sports games
Racing games
Games with army men

Any game in those genres suck. A game like Halo 3, an army man FPS with vehicles, is like -2.5 games in one.

I also said "so far this year" because Bioshock, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Blue Dragon/Lost Odyssey, are going to tip the scales back in 360's favor. But I can't be bothered to pretend there's been anything interesting on 360 this year besides Crackdown.

I tend to have more fun with "B+" games than "AAA" games for some reason. Well, people have a pretty warped definition of "AAA" sometimes... Like the Tony Hawk and GTA games frequently get 95+ rankings on gamerankings, but I think they are both really shite. But on the other hand, I'll play something like Baten Kaitos, Digital Devil Saga, Gurumin, or Crush to completion.

Fes is not a real version, it's a 30 hour expansion disc. It's like have a cherry on top of a cake. The cherry ain't necessary, but it's certainly awesome! Me and Error have been waiting for this game a shy year and a fucking half (and an entire year waiting for the game to come out in NA, since it came out in Japan last July) and we won't be un-hyped at this point. It's going nowhere but up at this point, and even without Fes we're just glad to get the damn game.

Plus, we're going to import Fes and get a translation if it doesn't come out anyways.

I can see how there haven't been that many 360 games that would interest you this year.  But if you haven't got a 360 yet, you can still catch up on games like Dead Rising, Condemned, Viva Pinata, etc.  There really hasn't been anything that's AAA on the PS2 this year other than God of War.  Everything else is just stuff from B-level teams.  Even Persona 3 is arguably from a 2nd tier developer.  Also, all 3 of my last gen consoles have rarely been turned on since I've beaten RE4 (GC), God of War, and Ninja Gaiden.  But that's just because I get sick of old tech really quickly.  I can't wait for the next mega videocard upgrade.

It has a confirmed real true ending though, who wants to play a partially completed game? Shame the reviewers left out this major point.

4) I'm not a tech whore.

Good for you.  I kinda feel ashamed for being one though.  :(   As much as I laughed at Lair fans, I can't really tolerate playing games with older graphics even if they have great gameplay.  Which is why I don't know why I have a WII.  Waggling is kinda fun on some games but it can't really make up for last gen graphics.  I think WII would be better if they stick with more cartoony graphics like Mario Strikers or Paper Mario.  Those games tend to look better with older tech.  I'm fine also with old 2d games like Baldur's Gate on the PC but 3d games just age terribly.  Even Half-Life 2 looks kinda outdated when I was playing it last week.  It sure would be a lot easier on my wallet if I weren't compelled to buy the highest performing videocard everytime.  lol

5) I'm not biased. :P

But haven't you been suggesting that the PS3 is a better system than the 360?  No one who's played both systems should possibly think that at this moment.

i'm pretty much the same way.  but backwards compatibility has saved the day for me on both the 360 and PS3.  i don't mind playing the older games so much as long as they're upscaled to 720p.  wii on the other hand, i don't really bother playing GC games on it.  the graphics whore in me can't stand how 480p/480i looks on my LCD hidef tv.

Are you guys sure?  PS3's upscaling seems to make PS2 games look worse unless the PS2 games don't support progressive scan.  A guy on GAf and an IGN feature had pics that clearly showed that PS2 games looked better on a PS2 than on a PS3 with upscaling.  Saving games are way more convenient on the PS3 though.  I think I still only have 1 8meg PS2 card despite having around 70-80 PS2 games.

compared to 480i, smoothing + upscaling produces a much more tolerable image.  blurs it a little bit, but gets rid of a lot of jaggies.  ps2 jaggies are like shoving needles in your eyes

PS2 games that look better upscaled are older games or games that utilize geometry over textures. The shin megami games look omg upscaled. A lot of the newest PS2 games afaik pull off a lot of tricks to make things look as good as they do on sdtvs. IMO VP2 doesnt look as good upscaled, but widescreen support IS nice. Cept the 2D obviously isn't supported as everything is stretched lol.

What's VP2?  I gave the PS3 upscaling a try with my newer games but widescreen doesn't stretch properly on my TV also.  And it's a top of the line Sony 1080P LCD panel.  lol

Also, I haven't tried 360's BC either despite having owned a 360 for more than a year.  I don't have a wireless adapter and I'm too lazy to hook it to my router upstairs to download the emulating software.  Does 360's BC look better than the PS3's since games are truely rendered in HD instead of just being upscaled?

they really should have added more blood during devours in battle, it's a shame that all the bloody parts are in CG sequences.

i can't really tell to be honest.  there's no smoothing option, but i do notice that xbox1 games have less jaggies when upscaled.  there's something up with the gamma on the 360 though, there needs to be an option to correct it.  BC games appear to be a little washed out compared to upscaled PS2 games.  then again, the PS3 gives you an option (full RGB) or whatever it is, to give your richer blacks.

360 bc is uhh...

anyway VP2 is valkyrie profile 2. I tend to avoid upscaling with the newer games but the Shin Megami and .Hack games do well enough. In fact the newest .Hack game looks pretty snazzy too. Upscaling isnt for everything tho, thats for sure.

I am thinking of getting a PS3 for Persona 3, so it will be upscaled into Persona "Sexy" 3, or PS3 (ironic-ally).

But that's all upscale dependent. Any reports on how the game upscales from the J-side?

yup, it's software here on out for the US PS3.  once all the 60gbs are phased out, everything will be emulated by software.  something like an 80% compatibility rate at this point.

well, the game sounds like it will have a lot of replay value.  considering that once a day passes, any action you decided not to do that day will not be accessible again (which means you'll have to replay the game and try different scenarios). the idea that your interactions during the day will shape your abilities and powers is crazy.

i'm sure you've read most of it.  i'm not usually keen on social aspects of rpgs, but the direct influence of it all sounds fascinating to me.  i'm not even bummed that the other players cannot be controlled manually, like the atlus interview in the back of the book said:  it gives you a sense of camaraderie and dependence on all members of your party, while putting all your effort into your primary character.  sounds like there's going to be less micromanagement.  then again, it could turn all the "control freaks" off.

I don't like how they let you name your character, but when other people say it they reword it so they don't actually say it.

example:

Baten Kaitos

"I'm Sagi, and this is my partner, __________." where blank would be your name

Tales of the World PSP

"I'm floating elf guy, and this is [MY PARTNER]." where MY PARTNER would be your name

i don't like silent protagonists most of the time. i always see people saying it's supposed to help with immersion or whatever by making it easier to represent you in the game, but i don't care about that. i'd rather have a character i might like than one that serves no purpose.

it's nice having options, but most of the time they don't really change anything anyway. and even when they do, it's not like it makes a big difference, so i don't really care. at best i get a different ending, but it's not like i'll be replaying a game just for a different 5 min cutscene after 30-40 hours.

I still say it's better than a character who runs his mouth who I hate at the outset of the game.

well uh, it's stupid to have a silent character and not letting the player have any input whatsoever in the story. the reason why I like silent leads more than a lead that talks is because when Im given choices I can decide and pick the one I like most instead of having the story decide that for me, it's more fun to me seeing how my decisions affect the game than having everything be scripted from the beginning.

it's stupid to have silent characters and have input go as far as changing a few dialogs or just the 5 min cutscene in the ending. it's as good as no choice at all, since it's definitely not enough to warrant a replay on its own.

besides, you can still have multiple paths with an actual main character, so add another -1 for silent protagonists.

I was fine with BOFV's silent lead because his simple character was easy to predict and understand. The character became the mission, and to that end served the story much better than most silent leads ever have.

well this strikes me as a silly discussion.

"silent protagonist" vs. "talking protagonist" is not what's being discussed.

it's "silent protagonist" vs. "talking protagonsit that i, myself, hate". which is a losing discussion.

personally i vastly prefer talking protagonists. usually games with silent protagonists are missing something from a storytelling perspective (i mean JRPGs here.) it's a basic generalization, but i think the only two JRPGs that i personally count among my favorites with a silent protagonist are persona 1 and suikoden II. offhand, anyway. well, there's always the ys games... =P
Title: Re: The best console rpg series of the last generation finally gets recognition
Post by: Himu on July 30, 2007, 08:52:16 PM
Likewise, I can pick only a few talking main characters that I have liked (and I'm talking jrpgs here). Which is funny, because my favorite jrpgs are the ones that feature silent leads:

Suikoden series (II and V in particular, especially when it comes to V, because depending on what you say and do it makes it much harder to recruit certain characters)
SMT series (Persona 1, 2, SMT3, DDS)
DQVIII
Dragon Quarter
Chrono Trigger

There are few jrpgs I can think of where a talking lead actually made me like him and want to know more about his plight.

These games are Final Fantasy VI, Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2, Skies of Arcadia, and Final Fantasy VIII. I have played many jrpgs, but the leads often come of as the least memorable characters, talking or not. So it never really mattered, because at least with silent protagonists, I am usually given a choice (depending on the game).

KotoR series? lmao. Kotor 1 is good but Kotor 1+2 does not equal best rpg series of last gen at all.

Ps2's 2007 line up thus far:

God of War 2
Red Star
Taito Legends 2
Raiden III
Raw Danger
Persona 3
Rogue Galaxy

etc. etc.

versus:

Lost Planet
Crackdown
uhhhhhhh Tenchu Z
Vampire Rain
Bullet Witch

The song that is played when Roland is on the run from Meganada is one of my favorite game tracks ever. Meguro's minimalist piano tracks are really really underrated.

:lol  reilly's really got it in for DDS.

i got a taste of about an hour of nocturne though...  i think i'm just about ready for demon fusion.  on meguro -- yes, i absolutely love the piano tracks.  he did the nocturne stuff as well right?  i fell in love with nocturne's music right off the bat.  in fact, i think all SMT music is really good... some of the guitar stuff is a little too glam rock for me though, i really dig the subtle atmospheric soundtracks in addition to the electronic stuff.

Reilly is an idiot. Avalon nailed DDS down pat. In theory, DDS is generic when compared to other SMT's, but only in the gameplay sense. But even when you compare DDS to other jrpgs, it's still creative stuff. I can get where he's coming from. But yeah, I played DDS1, Persona 1 and 2 before Nocturne. It made the demon fusion and the gameplay much easier to understand, so I didn't have too many problems because by that point I was pretty used to SMT gameplay. That still didn't ruin the experience for me though.

I can understand why any SMT fan wouldn't care for DDS, but the whole point of DDS to begin with was to grab non-SMT fans. It did its job. It's the game I suggest any non SMT fan to check out and see if they like it.

And yes, Meguro is in charge of SMT3's music. As well as DDS1+2, Devil Summoner 3, and Persona 3.

I think you should. It's by far the weakest SMT I've played.

Even though I say that, I still enjoy the game a lot. It's a very experimental game, and while some of the experiments work, most of it doesn't. But you can admire the effort to try something new.
