i'm not sure i fathom the review hate for this game. sure, it's hardly ambitious, and the class balance isn't diablo 2 for sure, but for what it is -- a shooter roguelike -- it's actually really well-polished and well done. it's definitely better than space hack! it actually feels a bit like the arcade game if you pick the SEAL class, since you start out with a weak laser rifle with unlimited ammo. the initial battery of foes is straight out of the original arcade game, and while the levels are more complex and there's always random loot, the attack patterns are good and the bosses are a moderate if somewhat grindy challenge.
here are my pluses and minuses:
+ very few load times
+ graphics are polished, and weapon effects are nice
+ levels are large but well-designed in layout
+ initial loot is not overpriced so upgrades come quickly
+ loot upgrades display on character
+ RANDOM DROPS!!!!
+ great character stats screen that provides nice breakouts for upgrades
- nub takes some adjustment re: controls
- initial class distinctions are lost since you can obtain skills from all the five classes
- crafting isn't super intuitive at first
- lol plot
- a little slowdown in the bigger firefights
- generic artstyle
so far, so good. i would give it a 7/10. it is most assuredly better than lair.

I hate slide nub. I want the new psp. slide is so unpredictable.
-
New PSP has a regular analog pad as opposed to a sliding nub?
-
I heard it was more of a 'stick' with tilt.
-
it's a combination, according to the gaf chatter. has some slide, some tilt.
-
Anything would be better than the horrible nub we have nowadays.
-
how does it slide if it tilts, thats wweeeeeiiiiiiird
-

Currently the nub causes me aggrivation when trying to land a sinker high and inside :(
-
small motions tilt, push harder and it starts to slide
-
thats weiiiiiiird
-
I hate how the slider works in Tales of the World. It makes movement feel so funky.
-
i hate you! psp is the greatest hardware of all time! jesus used to turn ds units into psp ones for the BETTERMENT OF ALL MANKIND
why do u hate gaming's savior
-
nub sux worse in mlb07 when yer trying to hit the corner, which is most of the time. I spend a good 3 seconds positioning a pitch, if not a few seconds more.

I like the PSP much more now than I did 2 yrs ago. I got one at launch but sold it after 3 months because the library was just comprised of PS2 ports with worse graphics, controls, features,etc... The PSP now has a nice library of games that are designed for portable gaming. The nub still sucks ass though. I replaced it with a much bigger nub which makes it slightly better but I still hate it. Sliding analog is possibly the worst control scheme ever created for handhelds.
-
How far along are you?
The stages get better and better looking!
-
I need to get my copy tomorrowz
-
I have at least decided that the game is a keeper.
I got some different types of weapons and enjoy the ultraviolence of close range projectile rounds.
Armor gets semi interesting...but I feel/hope I havent seen anything yet.

I'm stealing this thread!
What do you minmaxers think about PSP Dungeon Siege?
-
man I am curious about this game
Starcrablo
how's it compare with Dungeon Maker? I liked that game a lot for the first few hours but the lack of combat depth ultimately killed it.
-
Sounds good!
-
it is not even half as deep as diablo. however, it has some good arcade mechanics and level design to compensate. the loot is simpler than diablo, but the drop rate is good -- you get the rare orange unique or blue mixed in with the crap drops, and you can quickly scrap bad drops for "gold" (called resource points). unlike CRAPIONS OF NORCRAP, the uniques are super powerful -- like obscenely so, i found a combat staff that did 47-88 damage base on the second level of the first area, where most staves were 3-9 damage, lol -- BUT they usually require very specific skill minimums, giving you something to work towards.
(i need to write up my full-on retro review of CRAPIONS OF NORCRAP, by the by; talk about a totally f'ed up diablo clone!)
alien syndrome's big weaknesses are the nub controls for run-and-gun, and the lack of class diversity. some folks might find the art direction a bit generic, too, but as abrader says, it gets more interesting and ambitious as the levels progress. the loot tables aren't as expansive as diablo's, but they are better than, say CRAPIONS OF NORCRAP, and they have immediately useful effects, and the drop rate is great. best of all, drops are either crap or OMG AWESOME; the crafting system is used to keep you in the middling blue-level kit, which keeps you from monkeying about in the inventory system ad nauseum. it's actually a pretty cunning balance -- crafting lets you make sure that you always have good kit and can survive an area, and the drops are either for immediately useful items (health, energy), implants (charms, lol), scrap for money, special blueprints for superkit, and UBER drops. there's a few small lessons for action-roguelike devs here.
crafting is also nicely done. you have a little robot buddy, who is amazingly unobtrusive and has surprisingly good AI, and who functions as your superlackey -- he heals, recharges weapons, makes ammo, and serves as your crafting store. he even has upgrades to his own weaponry, healing/recharge functions, and fire rate, making him into a pretty useful OPTION-like firepower/support boost. you can buy healing/recharge items from him, but only in limited amounts per time period. he rocks.
it's a good game. it really needs to be on better hardware -- PC, L-O-L -- and it needs stronger art direction, but it does a good job taking 1980s maze shooter gameplay and strapping 2000-era hack-and-slash lootfest mechanics on it. i'd give it a 7/10.

I want Xybots on Xbox Live SO BAD.
So bad.
SO BAD.

i'm curious about dungeon siege psp, too. i keep hearing decent things about it, and i liked untold legends 2 despite the mediocre loot. however, i seem to remember hearing it was really buggy. truth?
-
you can't access certain content without the PC version and vice versa, I thought?
-
i just got the wii version in today from gamefly...

i just got the wii version in today from gamefly...
I am on edge of my seat waiting to hear about this
-
feel the excitement! i'll post some (probably brief) impressions when i get my hands on it tonight.
-
The Wii version really has shit controls. Saps all the fun out of the game. And I HATE to use the nunchuk in any Wii game. Another game promptly erased from my DVD+RW.
-
how easy/hard was it to mod your wii?
-
easy as 1-2-3
find a specialist living in your area via Craigslist or some shit
you can even burn the games on a DVD-RW that you'll end up erasing over and over again because Wii games all suck ass
-
i'm not sure i fathom the review hate for this game.
roguelike
to be very cynical, i'd suggest that's probably where it begins and ends. i don't particularly like rougelikes. in fact, i have been known to exclaim 'OH FUCK NOT A FUSHIGI NO DUNGEON GAME' etc. i am not sure offhand i've reviewed any, but they are hardly in vogue.
this actually ties into one of my big beefs with RPG reviewers, which is that many of them don't seem to actually enjoy the genre's gameplay much. i do, personally, obviously. i enjoy pretty much everything about the genre, at least in the abstract.
-

:lol that actually sounds very practical.
-
you better believe it
don't get a modded Wii if you easily get depressed, because you'll suffer from a relapse and lose faith in humanity after trying 11-12 games in a row :(

I hope Dungeon Siege is good too. I haven't been able to find a copy in retail stores yet. I heard that Dungeon Siege PSP is more like an action RPG than the PC version, is that true? Untold Legends 2 was pretty disappointing. I liked the Norrath/Baldur games on the PS2 much more.
-
yeah, dunegon siege psp is a straight up diablo clone -- no party management. untold legends 2 is pretty mediocre, but i don't think it's as busted as norrath, although it's pretty weak when it comes to loot and level design.

But it's the fighting more "clicky" like Diablo or more like Norrath? I prefer the latter for non-PC games.
-
could this have not been an XBLA game?

I dig the PSP game, but I can't imagine playing something this light as a full-priced console game. There's no depth to the gameplay at all. Even if the controls on Wii weren't shit, there's no way I'd play this on a console.
-
I like it a lot, Tank class ftw. I feel like master chief with a bo-staff.
-
isn't there a traditional controller option for Alien Syndrome Wii?
and if not, why for fucks sake did that happen?
-
WAGGLE

hyp, is the Wii version any good? Wouldnt mind some impressions from someone who isnt a biased troll

It's a good game, but a good portable game. Unless they strapped a missing gameplay system onto the Wii version, it's not going to be much better even if the controls work perfectly. There's little depth.
If this were on PSP and PS2, I would still go for the PSP version.
-
Much like 360 owners can play PC games, Wii owners can play PSP games
hua
-
I know it makes me seem simple, but I love the dumb kill and loot model of these games.

I might check out the Wii version if I see it cheap in the future. I dont have a PSP, although I might pick up one of those sooner or later. Dont really find much time for handheld gaming and my DS fills that gap well enough atm.

i'll post some tonight. wasn't able to get to it last night... got stuck playing carcassonne =\
-
got this, it's super fun
biggest issue is that ranged gunplay is nigh impossible thanks to the nub and awkward strafing controls
I'm using the BIG STICK WHAP WHAP POTION WHAP POTION WHAP WHAP method of dungeon hacking
I like the crafting
overall, way better than Norrath or Untold Legends
EDIT: giving this a 5 or 6 smacks of lazy "oh, a roguelike" 15-minute review cycle. roguelikes are awesome, awesome are roguelikes. fuck japafag narratives, give me KILLIN and LOOTIN and CHARACTER MINIMAXIN
-
i haven't really got the dungeon hack bug, but i'll play anything remotely resembling a 2d shooter. i even liked the sega ages remake of alien syndrome. i'll have to give this a try at some point.

Have you tried Killzone Liberation for PSP?

There's still a fair chance you will like this. It's a lil bit of both, but it really lacks the depth for me to call it a dungeon hack. All skills are passive, level bumps and special equipment just pump up stats; no new abilities.
I still think 40 is a bit much for the game, but it's a safe bet it won't be at that price point very long.

http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=11203.0 -- my quick impressions from a few days back. Melee is completely overpowered in the game btw, but its a fun kind of overpowered. Im using TANK class right now.
-
if you want a more arcade-y experience, go ranged. melee does indeed seem to be brutally overwhelming. it takes a period of adjustment to use the nub with ranged, but it's hardly terrible.
-
I do ranged. I just use the alternate control setup where you hold down a shoulder button to strafe.
-
oo, you can do that? hurr, i should checked in options. the shoulder buttons don't serve any real purpose outside of redundant access to health potions and shielding, so YAY
-
I just use em for health potions if I do need em, melee doesnt require a lot of strategy. I mean the hits are satisfying but im never really working the field, just bumrushing shit.

kind of.
i think it more smacks of the fact that people who review games don't actually seem to understand what makes a game interesting. i don't think most reviewers give games good scores based on their respect for it vs. their enjoyment of it (i have done this. case in point is dark cloud 2 which i pretty much hate but gave an 8.)
but it's hard for me to discuss this as i have not and will not be playing this game. shrug.
