as much as i love my 20gb, i can't stand the fact that after doing partial installs on only 4 games, the damn hdd is full already (with a couple PSN downloads). rr7, resistance, ng sigma, and vf5 is apparently enough to do the trick. there's even mandatory installation in some games like F.E.A.R. (which takes up a 700mb chunk of space)
i mean come the fuck on, if you're going to build a console, make sure the drive is fast enough to support the data -- don't make me install shit and fill up my drive because your hardware takes 2 to 3 times as long to load off the disc. to top it all off, there are still shitty load times even after installing part of the game.
now i really need to upgrade the drive. sony fails big time with blu ray load times.

how does one UNINSTALL a game on the HDD? is there a defrag utility?
MS was right in disallowing game installs, even if it was necessitated by a lowest common denominator SKU.
-
Yeah but Microsoft doesnt NEED installs like Sony does with its slowass bluray.

there's a GAME DATA folder under the GAME icon of the XMB. it's dependent from SAVE DATA which is your actual save games. kinda freaked me out at first when i went to delete shit, luckily my saves were intact.
-
can i back up saves to a USB NTFS drive? i'm gonna replace my 60 gb with a 200 gb 7200 drive. is the drive SATA?
-
I dont understand - its the same when it comes to Pc gaming....
Justs delete the DAT files / cache data for games you arent playing - or get a bigger drive....
I got a 160 gigger in mine.
Also- dont play shyt like FEAR on the PS3, its better on the X360.
-
haha, yeah, the ONE improvement that the PS3 Oblivion has over the 360 version is speedy load times -- because it installs the whole fucking game to the HD!
abrader, does the ps3 have a defrag utility
-
does the ps3 have a defrag utility
No, but it really should.
Aside from Oblivion, I haven't noticed any difference between installing and not installing, so I leave my extra space open for other stuff like videos and PSN games.
-
the ps3 is dumb

how dare you... ps3 is the best ps2 EVER.

Does one really need to constantly keep hefty HD trailers and demos on its HDD?
Apart from that, I don't see the problem. 20GB HDDs are very rare in the mainstream. For 60GB, it's highly unlikely that someone will have more than 13-14 disc-based PS3 games to play in constant rotation. You can then temporarily uninstall the unused game cache (by pressing the triangle button upon it in the XMB). Considering that the near totality of gamers play far, far less games in a year than we the hardcore do, it won't pose any widespread issue.
Smart choice to finally allow data caching on consoles, another advantage that was once the apanage of PCs.
-
After I see a trailer / demo I usually delete it the day/day after.
I only keep savs/PSN games on the HDD :shrug
-
PSN downloads themselves are getting pretty hefty. i can see a 60gb filling up quickly once the titles start rolling. especially if they are going to allow full games like warhawk downloadable over the network. i usually delete my demos and trailers. but i keep my PSN titles on the system, no way in hell i'm going to delete those and re-download them again. even on a wired connection, PSN downloads are pretty slow.
-
dunno, since you can re-download them anytime... it's like, if i am not playing a game much, i'd probably delete it.
anyway, yeah, it doesn't sound like a big problem to me. if you're some kind of power user who has dozens of PSN games and you need all of these game installs handy because you're frequently playing like 10 different PS3 games then... suck it up and buy a bigger HDD. heh.
-
i'm a hoarder =\ you should see my XBLA list. :lol

Huh? Xbox 1 already had that. Funny how Sony fans start to appreciate hard drives in console and HD audio once their "system of choice" started to have them.

i pick at multiple games, often across the span of a couple years, so installations SUCK

Did you get Halo 2 for vista? It installs while you play. That's pretty cool. Vista X64 ultimate is the best OS on earth. We need to get the ignorant mass of computer users to jump aboard.

you know that it's the PC-like installations of games that we're referring to, that didn't exist previously on consoles

You said "data caching" which Xbox 1 already had. The data caches of the 3 most recently played games stayed permanently on Xbox 1's HD.

i play a game in a big chunk. still, it seems to me with the number of games you could potentially have installed on a 60 GB PS3, this still wouldn't be a major problem. by the time you got near the limit, you could probably realistically gauge which of the 10+ games installed on the HDD you actually won't pick up again.
-
Uh, the PS3 has no games to install so I don't see a problem.
Playstation 3
This is installing.

Drinky is just trolling as usual. :lol I download and keep almost every 1080p trailer since I've little else to do with the PS3. I've also downloaded most of the demos and played about 15 games on my PS3. After all the demos, trailers, installations and Tekken 5, I still have around 25 gbs left. I can be trusted on this since I"ve already been accused of being too harsh on the PS3.

You do know that games like Ridge Racer 7 give YOU the option of not installing anything on the hard drive. Now mandatory installs is an entirely different story, and I agree with you there. They should never be mandatory unless they're very small. I think Resistance's install file is very small.
Yeah but Microsoft doesnt NEED installs like Sony does with its slowass bluray.
That would be a great point, if it were true. The "install" for Resistance is very small. I'm not sure exactly, but it's tiny, and the game still loads some huge levels at a rather decent speed.
So no, it's not about Bluray being slow, and installs being necessary. It's about lazy developers.
-
i understand that, but the insanely long load times tell me that i should always do partial installs on games. it's just not worth it to sit there and wait for tracks to load. it really shouldn't be an option, you're right -- lazy developers should get their shit together and optimize this shit. hard drive installation shouldn't even be an option for them.

Well, I certainly don't mind hard drive installs being an option. I wouln't mind being able to install a big portion of one of my favorite games if it meant I would see almost no loading. But for games like Ridge 7, it's like "install this huge portion of the game, and still wait through a regular load time". That shit should stop.
Of course none of this is really new, and every new piece of hardware takes some time to get loading under control.
-
Blugay am slow lol
-
I think it was proven 2X Bluray reads faster on average than 12X DVD. Even if DVD is reading as fast as it could for a single layer game Bluray has superior seeking/transferring from two different places on the disk (both HD disks do because they need to for interactive movie requirements).
-
Why isn't MS attempting this with the Xbox? Many PC games support multiple install options. It would be a good counter to the Blu-Ray "space" argument. An HDD is faster than 2xBR, after all.
