Title: Is 733 a good credit score?
Post by: Christopher on July 31, 2007, 11:14:39 PM
Sorry but I'm just making sure - is it like on par with getting your own home score good?

it's not bad.  you can get a home with a low score, doesn't mean you'll get good financing though.  Pretty decent for someone your age though.

Yeah, Chris, that's a rather good score for someone that doesn't have a long credit history.

Well according to my report I have:

store cards:
Macys
Express
Wachovia Visa Card
Chase Card - that I NEVER used - but it's in "good standing"

- Those all have no balances at all - if I charge something I always pay it back within 30 days, lick my dick if you think you'll charge my finance charges on that.

I also have a small student loan that I personally took out becaues I didn't want my dad to pay for almost everything - and it's in good standards so that's it :shrug.

I think MSN said it best; "Home loans aren't about being nice. Its business."

I would think it'd be a good score, it's only from like 430-830 or whatever and you're definitely on the upper end of it.

I'll answer your question very clearly.

733 is an excellent score, and is higher than probably 90% of the people in the U.S. right now.  I worked at a credit card company for 3 years, and I didn't see very many people with a scoer higher than that.  Above 700 is pretty much considered excellent.  Of course that doesn't mean some bank will just give you whatever loan you want, but it means that they're certainly going to feel comfortable dealing with you.

As I'm going through the "buying a home" process, I just found out that over the last three years, my credit score has gone from a 720 to a 768. I've got $40,000 in student loans that I diligently pay ($315 a month), and a credit card that's paid off every month. I was all excited with my 768, until our mortgage broker said that my wife has a credit score of 795... whoa.

I've also heard that if you don't pay off your credit card in full every month, but make consistent payments, it will help to increase your score.

Thats not really true.  Carrying a debt month to month can also be viewed as a negative.  Especially when buying a home.  So, in a perfect world, you'd have a credit card you paid off in full each month.

Yeah, it never made sense to me, but that's what I'd been told by some of our real estate agent friends. Not like a huge debt that you'll never be able to pay off, but just like a few hundred that you pay off over a few months.

Never had a credit card in my life and when the realtor checked my credit score it was at 711..

Its cause Ive taken out 16OOO bucks to pay for college. Having loans will help you with it.

It doesn't hurt, but you'll need to actually use it and pay it off for it make a difference in terms of your credit score.

O then I wouldn't.

What does a good credit score get you?  Other than the banks are more trusting.

It helps you get credit cards, it helps when you go to buy a new car, and it helps when you want to buy a house. Also, employers are starting to look at credit scores when looking at people for jobs.

You can legally get a free credit report once a year every year. No fees, at least not when I've done it in the past.
