It looks really nice so far. Like, really nice.
-
is it better than tales of the world??? i'm still stuck on it
-
I'm at the beginning, doing some Cave of Trials. I'm being asked questions by four statues, probably to determine my base stats.
-
how are the graphics? does it look like it was built from the ground up on PSP?
-
Yeah, it looks really nice. You could probably port this to PS2 (or wii, lol). Lots of bloom in the opening.
-
I just did a battle. Pretty simple. You can change the voices from English to Japanese if you'd like. When you attack and get attacked, it shows giant effects like you would see in Batman.
THUDD
SMACK
SWISH
Oh oh, the main character is a silent protagonist. Except in battles.
-
This or Persona 3?
-
This, Persona sucks
-
demi, you're so predictable.
-
Lick my Traveler's Sword
Oh neat, you gain levels in battle.
Also, if a character defeats an enemy in their hit, they will gain an Extra Attack and hit the next enemy.
Ok scratch that, seems to happen at random.

I just found a store clerk named Demi, which probably isn't named after me but I'm going to pretend it is and shove a cucumber in my butt.
-
i saw a bear store clerk
-
OMG I saw like 5 of those and I was like this game is amazing and I am still playing it I'm in the Seaside Cave and I am gonna fight the giant enemy crab
-
This game is really easy, I just mowed down the crab with ease. I hope it gets at least a bit more difficult. I do like the casual pace I can go at, though.
-
OMG NICEST LOOKING PSP GAME
-
The game looks nice, and plays like, well, any PS1 or SNES era RPG, but I have a feeling this is only getting its clit rubbed because it is the nicest looking RPG on the PSP. Battles look very nice.
The story, characters, whatever is absolute excrememnt. The main character, look at his face; he looks like a toddler.
-
U suk o god i drank
-
The story, characters, whatever is absolute excrememnt
but u lik marathon lolololol
-
eh, i find it oddly disarming and pleasant, even if the cat girl dresses like she wants to get plugged at a medieval rave. not everything needs to be angst-addled androgynes traversing a split reality
-
I think most reviews are dinging it for being NOT ANGST story and thats not fair. SoA didnt have angst and it was amazing.
-

I've not played the 360 game, but the original Marathon games are not only pretty great early FPS and still widely played on the non-360 internet, but also totally irrelevant to the conversation. What does a good FPS have to do with a mediocre, if slick, RPG?

Yow, thanks for the warning. Drinky almost had me convinced into buying it. Now I know not to pick it up unless I see it cheap, used.

TVC: Everything when yer drunk. Plus Marathon sucks.

I like how youre willing to believe "absolute excrement" against a game that is receiving solid marks and positive opinions. I dont doubt someone may not LIKE the story and characters, but "Absolute Exrement" is worthy of a 1Up review.
-
I don't go to gaming websites, so how would I know it's getting solid reviews?
-
besides, if you can stomach the plot/characters of the robot wars games, brave story's animu twist on the neverending story shouldn't perturb you overmuch. we know tvc15 hates saccharine anime plots. you, however, have indicated a preference for them!
brave story is a really well-done, well-polished RPG with a great old-school battle system and shockingly competent visuals.
-
Brave Story is character driven anyway, its not about the destination, but the journey. This game's localization is crazy good and full of character.
-
I just got the second Gemstone, and now my sword is a lightsaber looking thing.
I like how the game decided to throw not one - not two - but THREE bosses in a row! Probably the first challenge in the game, but it was still pretty easy.
-
I just got a fourth character that I can swap in and out, and when you win a battle, everyone gets EXP so you don't have to worry about people being low-leveled from not being used.
-
I've been hyping this game since I first heard about it over a year ago. I was extremely impressed with it and I'm glad it turned out great. Despite how hyped I was over this game (never thought it would come stateside, but it did), it has exceeded my expectations. The storyline is awesome and fits my liking. Graphics are truly awesome and I enjoy the soundtrack. This is the first RPG I bought all year I just can't stop playing. This truly is THE PSP RPG.

Because good marks mean SO MUCH? http://gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/589573.asp
The game is as generic as RPGs come. Unless you have a fetish for playing games that feel like you've played them before (ie a Nintendo fan) skip it. It's amazing what pretty visuals will do to a reviewer. The emperor's got no clothes in this case. Aside from pretty graphics (for PSP) there's absolutely nothing notable about this RPG.
There are trad RPGs that are worth playing, like SMT and some Tales games, but at least they all bring their own thing to the formula. This game doesn't. Nothing at all. Behind the pretty graphics, you have a Wild Arms 1-quality battle system, ie a 16 bit battle system rendered in 3d, as simple as they come.
And I stand by my absolute excrement comment. This is even more Generic Animu than Tales of the Abyss. It's like textbook animu, as if devised by some totally boring mathematical formula. And the main character's design is terrible. His face LOOKS LIKE A TODDLER.
And oddly enough, MAF says my comments are 1UP WORTHY! Let's see what 1up said about his precious, godawful Brave Story:
http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3161669
OOPS! WHO'S 1UP WORTHY NOW, MAF!?
-
Yep, very traditional
It's really easy to get into though, no unnecessary grinding. I haven't died once.

i don't see what's so wrong (or atypical) about playing games that you feel comfortable with.

Honestly, nothing at all, but I can't remember the last time I saw an RPG so middling get such praise and hype.

Valkyrie Profile
Not one of my favorites, but I could understand people cummin' over that. At least it did things differently in both play and presentation.

Persona 3

Persona 3
I'll wait until I've played it. It at least sounds fairly different for an RPG. I have my concerns over descriptions of the combat. SMT hasn't done me wrong on consoles this gen, so I am willing to let the hype flow without bitching.
-
Wow this game looks so generic. No doubt demi is pimping it over actually interesting rpgs like Valkyrie Profile and Persona 3.

Agreed. The game is fantastic. I don't care if the game shares elements from other RPGs, I just care it's really good, and this game certainly is. Definitely the best PSP RPG IMO.
-
I see nothing wrong with enjoy games you're comfortable with, so long as you don't hate on the ones that strive to go an extra mile and do something different, like demi. But then, he has shit taste.
-
Hey, I've played em all and they're turds. Persona 3 isn't even a complete game, they might as well recall it. Oh wait, they kinda did, lol.
-
VP2 > VP1, omg VP2 = perfection of battle system omg good story omg visuals
Oh TVC, teh sensitive
-
I need to pick it up
I'll probably splurge and pick up these
Tales of Abyss
DDS2
VP2
Should just port them to PSP instead ;(
-
VP2 on PSP would make me go nuts with joygasms
-
not sure the ol' psp could do vp2 justice visually, but i'd like a portable vp spinoff with vp2's battle system.
-
A MAN CAN DREAM :(

I'm sorry that you just can't accept that this is basically the Tech Romancer of RPGs. Oh wait.

TEH SENSITIVE
-
but tech romancer had awful graphics and great gameplay!

I have them all. :D They are all great games.
The only RPGs I usually don't say good things about are western ones, but that's because they aren't for me.
-

I'm glad to know you're a fellow Tech Romancer fan. That was such a fun game. The graphics weren't really that terrible, either. Not like Plasma Sword, anyway.
Tech Romancer :bow

Tech Romancer is the main reason I'd never let my Dreamcast go. I remember trading in my copy of THPS2 to get it, and that was definitely the best trade I ever made. The story was not bad for a fighter, very fun to play, and lots of unlockables. I would do anything to see a Tech Romancer sequel, or even just re-release the game on XBLA (if it can be under the file size limit)/PSN with online play. I thought the graphics were all right, but the anime artwork was great IMO.
-
TECH ROMANCERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
-
this game is getting kinda boring =[
-
i'm finding the opposite -- it's only now starting to get difficult. the linear "town->dungeon->town->dungeon" formula grates a fair bit, though; there's really NOTHING in the way of sidequests. still, i'm actually gonna finish it, so yay me!
-
Wild Arms 3 had the town dungeon stuff, but the battles were great. I do like how the tug of war for BP counts more and more as the game goes on. I dunno if its fair to suddenly level these criticisms against its traditional structure while we all lap up square re-releases like FF1 and whatnot. I mean there's clear effort involved, should we honestly slap down the first dev to put an all-around solid RPG experience on the PSP because the game does what most RPGS do before it?
Definately the best original RPG on PSP.
-
I'm at the SWAMP OF GRIEF (taken from page 204 of the book of rpg cliches)

how far are you? i'm about 6 hours in, maybe that's why.
-
i just beat the desert dungeon and am in gasara -- the desert ruins starts to up the difficulty a bit, with enemies that take certain actions based on the bravura/unity skills you use and the other foes in their group you attack. i'm enjoying the game a lot, don't get me wrong, but after the wild arms games and the grandia games, i'd like to be able to branch off the main arc a bit and take a few risks.
it's a great handheld rpg, but on a console it'd be merely good. it definitely spanks anything rpg-related on the ds/psp at the moment, save maybe tales of the world (which is a different experience altogether).

I definitely agree. It's the best handheld RPG which is not a port (maybe even the best overall). Yeah, it may not be the most original RPG, but it's really good IMO.
Tales of the World: RM is good too, but just doesn't have that special feeling Brave Story does IMO.
-
Haha
I just got the fourth gemstone, and soon after you fight a boss
This enemy used an attack on me called FERRICIDE :o
-
I played the first hour or so, this game seems generic as hell. And wtf at all the bloom.
Are any of the characters cool? I hate playing as broody mute preteen and hyperactive cat girl.
Plus that sword doesn't look like it could cut shit.
-
The teen isnt moody tho. The sword upgrades. The dual sword lady is awesome and I replaced lizard guy with her until she has enough mana to replace cat girl in the battle group. It got a crazy good localization and is pretty charming if you give it a chance.
I think the only thing, mechanics-wise, that bugs me is I grind a lot...A LOT, because the battles are so fast. So I generally meet new characters that are 2-3 levels lower than me, and they never catch up since everyone gets xp whether or not their in or out of battle. So the newest characters are always the weakest for me.
-
I use Tatsuya, Meladee and Sogreth -- Sogreth learns a killer move later on, and Tatsuya just learned one as well.
Once you become Highlanders, you have to grind if you want money.
-
Yeah I am replacing Yuno once Meladee gets a few more levels. When she first joins she has healing spells but crap for mana, but now she's about where I need her to be.
