Title: Is Ender's Game actually a good book?
Post by: bagofeyes on August 07, 2007, 10:41:35 PM
It won awards and shit, but the plot sounds childish and boring. I've had a copy of it for years but have never tried to start it.

Didn't Card write the plot to Advent Rising?

you know, i hated ender's game as a teen, and everyone gave me shit for not liking it and told me i was a snotty asshole nitpicker fuck. now i realize two things from this: i should have stuck to my guns and continued to berate them for their shit taste, and that i am in fact a snotty asshole nitpicker fuck so why not embrace it. fucking teenagers! where were you, patel, when i wanted to be right!

I read Ender's Game and thought it was pretty decent as a kid.  Later on, I read the conspiracy theory of Card having written it as an apologia for Hitler and LOL'd.

That was such complete horseshit it was laughable.

Ender's Game is well worth reading, that's really the only answer you need.

I loved it, but I could give two shits about some theory about shoehorning christianity into a book.  I just loved the ride for what it was.  It was a really cool idea that lent itself to a novel format, they have been talking about a movie adaptation for years but I just don't see how it's possible.  I'd love to see one if they could somehow pull it off, but I'm nearly convinced if they did make it into a flick that it would have to suck.

Just read the book.

First off, I'm a little bit drunk, so I'm sorry if this message is shitty.

I loved Ender's Game. It's my favorite book. The companion piece, Ender's Shadow is pretty fucking awesome too. I enjoyed the rest of the books in both the Ender and Bean series, but I don't think many people did. Fuck 'em though. Fuck 'em hard. I liked the books. Fuckers.

Actual conversation I had at work a few weeks ago. Boss A has excellent taste in books. Boss B is a great guy but not as widely read within the genre:

Me: I'm looking for some new SF authors, can you recommend anything?
Boss A: You've read Zelazny, right?
Me: *disparaging look*
Boss A: Haha, of course. Okay, check out Clark Ashton Smith. He's like proto-Lovecraft.
Me: Sounds cool.
Boss B: Have you read Ender's Game?
Boss A: Shut up, men are talking.

sorta OT, but Get Your War On is so great. I had a chance to hear David Rees, the creator, give a talk, and he is this super-meek guy who was worried that his parent's wouldn't like his comics!

One of my friends and I were chatting and he recommended a book to me, Ender's Shadow, which is supposedly like a sidestory to Ender's Game that takes place around the same time as the original novel.  Talk about getting desperate and going back to the same well for ideas, lol.
