Title: WHO IS JOHN GALT? aka the Atlus Shrugged blogging project starts limp
Post by: TVC15 on August 09, 2007, 02:06:13 AM
So I read the first 2 pages before literally falling asleep.  Judging from those 2 pages, this is gearing up to be a very poorly written novel.  The first 2 pages are written predominantly in the passive voice, which is good for say, technical writing, but definitely terrible for, say, novels.

Groan.  At this point I will be lucky if I finish the first chapter by the weekend.  The book has 30 chapters total, broken into 3 sections, so even if I just do a chapter or 2 per week, this won't take all that long.  The chapters are long enough that I will probably have to take notes while reading, too.  Le sigh.

Atlas Shrugged is one of the worst books ever to gain critical acclaim.  How that tripe managed get published is beyond me.  Read the Cliff's Notes and pretend you read the actual book, I promise I won't tell a soul. :shh

According to the Wiki article, it was a critical failure, but she was just that big then.  The Fountainhead was apparently a massive hit, though.

There's so much literary criticism on Atlas Shrugged I just assumed it had been a hit.  WTF would anyone waste time writing about a failure, especially one as execrable as this book (I had to read it in a lit. class by a professor who was a big fan of Randian objectivism)? ???

Despite being a critical failure, it was a huge popular success.
