Title: persona 3 LIES TO TEENS
Post by: Van Cruncheon on August 16, 2007, 01:11:08 AM
i answer nerdy questions correctly in class, and i become MORE POPULAR and MORE CHARMING? what the fuck? this is bullshit! answering questions correctly -- or even acknowledging the teacher's existence -- should result in massive public scorn, derision, humiliation, and WEDGIES. this is NOT RIGHT.

every teenager that is not a loser shitfuck KNOWS that education is for feggits. persona 3 is betraying a fundamental tenet of the schoolyard here.

Maybe it's a school for gifted kids?

How's the game so far? I still haven't started it.

you want to make the people playing the game happy.  It's supposed to be a fantasy.  everyone knows that playing games like Persona dramtically drops your chance to get a girl.  And if you're married, you might get dumped for this.

If you think Persona 3 is backwards when it comes to being a smarty in school, you should see what REALLY happens when you fire a gun against your temple.

That's kinda a redundant question for me, no?  That's the thing I hate most about being a med student.  You can't deny that you're a nerd.   :'(

I need a bit more time before I can pass judgement.  The intro is LONG in it.

I won't mind if the intro is as gorgeous as FF12's.  Demi was wrong.  FF12 wasn't that bad.  If Bioware's videos look 1/2 as nice, they'll see millions more copies.

Too bad FF12's in game graphics and more importantly, gameplay, are shit though.   lol  Still, I"m keeping it so that I can watch all the videos when I have time to download other people's game saves.

gah, i like the more mellow, instrumental tracks in the game (velvet room music rocks).  but all the j-pop shit is driving me nuts.  the VA is fucking horrible as well.  how come everyone sounds like an extra from the OC?  goodness, i'm really disappointed in the audio department, in fact they re-used a bunch of old nocturne/DDS sounds.

gameplay is okay so far, i'm only 3 hours in.  i really hope it picks up.  the social element is starting to bore me.
Title: Re: persona 3 LIES TO TEENS
Post by: TVC15 on August 16, 2007, 01:14:43 PM
Yeah, during the day, it seems like the game uses a lot of shitty house-y pop music that relies on one brief loop, made even more annoying when there is a vocal part to the loop, which there frequently is.
Title: Re: persona 3 LIES TO TEENS
Post by: hyp on August 16, 2007, 01:32:42 PM
they should have kept the vocals for the intro cinema exclusively.  i'm going to have to eventually turn my volume down when i play.   i totally agree with you that the "upbeatness" of it all fucks w/ the mood of a typical SMT game which is usually dark and gritty.  it feels like the devs wanted to reach out to a broader audience this time around.  seems to be working too -- the animu style is getting a lot of praise.

if the social elements are starting to bother you then you'll have a tough time in the game.

I like the balance the game has, got tired of the dungeon well I can enjoy interacting with the NPCs got tired of that, then I can go back to the dungeon.

I put the game way above DDS myself for now, the game is just balanced to a ridiculous degree whereas DDS was all dungeon/story/dungeon/story. not sure about putting it above Nocturne yet. one thing for sure the battle system is amazing and the boss fights are already a lot of fun, fusion like always kicks ass.

the music doesnt bother me tbh, it fits the high school setting very nicely.

i'm hoping the social part grows on me, especially when i start getting into the whole S.LINK business.   my gripes stem from playing 4 hours and not getting much out of it.  so i'm sure there's a lot in store.

you will learn to like it, when your S.link rank is like 5 and you fuse a persona of that arcana and it gains like 4 levels because of your rank  :D you'll have a persona that's five levels above yours.

Ummmm this game keeps getting more interesting as you play it, but it sure starts slowly. A seemingly neverending stream of so-so cutscenes and dialogue where you just press the X button once in a while. Thankfully after about an hour and a half the town opens up and you finally begin to fight regularly.

Also, the graphics just suck ass, they're of quasi-PSOne levels at time. So much that the environments and the objects contained within are dull and very poorly defined, making it somewhat of a chore to just move around and guide yourself through the levels. I'm not a graphics whore by any means, but it sure is somewhat of an hassle to go from the best-looking 3D japanese console roleplaying game ever made (Blue Dragon) to one of the poorest-looking ones.

The pop and rap tunes don't bother me, they seem to be produced in tongue-in-cheek. They're hilarious and add to the teenage atmosphere.

And the omnipresent spoken dialogue is really a bad thing; even if the voice acting is of a decent quality it still manages to completely spoil the atmosphere since you'll probably just skip through the text with haste. So, make sure to turn it off in the configuration menu.

I like the battle system, and also appreciate the randomly-generated dungeons, along with the numerous novel RPG elements that Persona 3 appears to bring forth. Persona 3 also appears to offer a charming cast of characters, and the daily school life system is another welcome innovation.

So, can you fuck yourself over in this game?  Do you have to get to a certain level of the dungeon by a certain date, or game over?

no, tartarus blocks your progress if you reached the end of a block before a full moon you wont be able to keep going. that's the best way to measure your progress in the game.
Title: Re: persona 3 LIES TO TEENS
Post by: Mondain on August 16, 2007, 10:50:42 PM
yeah I just reached the first blocked road and wasted like 3-4 days doing minor character improvements around the city... you have some deadlines to meet, but the game appears to be lenient enough so that you don't end up being royally screwed up

and I also completed the first major challenge that is catalyzed by the full moon... pretty good stuff, the crew of characters is good too

worth playing

Post by: TVC15 on August 17, 2007, 12:57:54 AM
I've only put a few days in, but so far the game hasn't done a good job of letting me know what my deadlines are, so I've kind of been trying to max out my days, not knowing when something needs to be done.  My character is level 5 and I am on dungeon level 14.

protip: splitting up lets you cover a lot of ground in a floor quickly, so if you want to make a mad dash towards the end of the block you can just split up your team and they will search for the stairs in a floor.

Nich says you can get by on visiting Tartarus as little as once or twice a month. You just need to find the balance between S-Linking and dungeon hacking that works for you.

urgh, there's some MMORPG relationship that you can develop, and the other player answers to you in 1337 speak

already put 8 hours in, this shit is fucking crack.  but GODDAMN the soundtrack!  finally reached the first block @ tartarus.  the level 14 boss was cake if you
spoiler (click to show/hide)
fused a pixie & angel -- resists his strike attacks.  oh and don't forget to visit the shrine EVERY DAY and receive a fortune, most of the time you get a free 1000yen or 10000yen and i've offered at least 100yen and have gotten a raise in academics every time.  should be the first thing you do after school.
[close]

the social part has gotten a little better for me now, especially since there's a lot of free time to just do whatever.  battles are still my favorite part of the game though.

I got passed it easily my third time.  I

used Apsaras, which eliminated my ice weakness and gave me that ability that heals my entire party + raises evade.  Made it really easy, except when Bow Bitch would get weakened

Then I hit level 16, got my page, and turned my quest in.  I still have not encountered a beetle to get a shell.  Also, it is only April 30th for me, and I have a lil over 5 hours in.  I AM MACHINE.

I also figured out how to get a Jack Frost, via a 3 card spread fusion.  Since I am ahead of the game, I may do that, and then go back into Tartarus to reclaim the cards I used to make it (one of which is a useful, possibly even necessary card).

you can find beetles between floors 10-14, the few times i ran into those suckers they were usually isolated towards to the upper left edge of a map.  (but the game is random, so it's probably just a coincidence).   wow, 4/30 huh?  i'm assuming you've spent a lot of time in the tower and less on social activities?  i missed out an a whole 2-3 day spread because 'bow bitch' was sick.  that really messed w/ my game time.  though i got a few ranks up on my s.links during that time.  right now my s.link's aren't doing much for me.

I wish to be in Persona 3

Any general gameplay advice? Nich suggested you go to the mall every evening (when it's the only thing open) and either drink coffee (Charm+) or sing karaoke (Courage+). Also, always study before going to bed (Academic+) unless you're sick or tired.

yeah that's why I do, the theater also gives you a nice boost if you go to watch a movie depending on the movie showing you'll get a boost on Charm or Courage. but it's only opened at After School Periods.

are you guys in the midterms?

edit: if the hero is tired or sick, go to the nurse at school you'll get a free courage boost everytime.

do you visit the shrine every day for an academics boost?  on certain days when there is nothing to do during the day i visit the old couple @ the bookstore for a nice S.LINK boost.  use the bathroom as well to increase your mood from "good" to "great" on some days.  if you haven't figured this out yet, after school you can go straight to the town map by talking to the guy closest to the front door of the classroom.

every sunday (i think), during the daytime, turn on the TV inside your door room to buy special items from the home shopping network that aren't available anywhere else.

Money is in short supply in the game.  Also, I might be wrong, but if you study before bed, you seem to lose energy, like studying and sleeping takes away from your status, whereas just going to bed adds to it.

I want to be at home playing, too :(

it's been like 3 times that I had to bear the same boring 20 minutes of text cutscenes where you just press X
