Title: System Shock 2
Post by: bork on August 16, 2007, 09:53:45 PM
I'd like to try this game (should I play System Shock first?), but I know it's old and I don't know if it's still available for purchase somewhere.  Also didn't it get some patches to make it look a bit more modern and run better on Windows XP?  Where would I start looking for this game?

Some people say System Shock 1 is better; I say it's debatable; but what's not debatable is that SS2 is easy to install and play on modern machines and SS1 uses a pre-standardization 3D interface (no mouselook and 47 keyboard keys) and requires folding your RAM into a Lament Configuration just to get it to load.

So, play SS2.

I would install the hi-res texture pack but avoid the updated model pack.

why avoid the updated model pack?  i've been thinking of reinstalling this.  do you know if there's any problems with installing it on a vista machine?

Shock 2 is the better game IMO, if only because it's a "modern" PC title. The original System Shock is a real throwback.

Home of the Underdogs has a version for download. http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=3924

Here's the TTLG FAQ-you'll need it to work around some common issues:

Just d/led SS2 off the Underdogs link, do the SS games have anything to do with BioShock aside from being from the same developers and both being FPSes with RPG elements?

There's no story connection. Bioshock is the spirital successor to the System Shock games, so many of the elements in Bioshock-isolation, audio log narration, "magic"-like powers and weapon modification are carried on into Bioshock.

I downloaded a torrent of SS1 and ran it without any weird ram configuration on Windows XP.

I played it for about a half hour before I quit. The interface is too archaic to be enjoyable anymore, and the weird UI makes it so you can't see shit. Also not being able to change the resolution sucks.

I wanted so hard to enjoy the game, but its not aged well at all.

Downloaded this game, unzipped, then went to play... everything seemed to run smoothly but there was no sound. So then I saw an OGG extractor that came with the package, went to run that, and it extracted all the sound files... so then I started the game, heard music in the menu select, but as soon as I start a game, I get booted back to XP... Anybody face this problem?
