HOLY FUCK do I hate my parents for not making me be Chinese. Fuck you, too, God, I am sure you had your hand in this travesty.

Post a review please, TVC. IGN said it was one of the best martial arts movies ever but it was IGN, so I was like ::). What do you think of the one-armed swordsman? I thought it was an incredible movie for its time. It's extremely dark and filmed in a surprisingly modern manner. The fight scenes are not as fancy as most martial arts movies but they are dark and gritty fights that you can believe to be real. The sequel was extremely disappointing though.

I suggest buying the thai r3 series of release of the entire shawn brothers catalog, all remastered, with PERFECT english subs. It's really worth your money, but beware of bootlegs!

Hmmm, the three I bought (this, King Boxer, and One Armed Swordsman) are all reissues just from June or July. They all have decent features (like commentary with Tarantino and THE RZA). Any chance these might be those versions? The picture quality is pretty good, about as good as I'd reasonably expect from a Chinese film from the late 70s.

I think the Shaw brothers sold the whole catalog to some Singaporean company which is why the tranlastions are pretty good since English is one of the 1st languages in Singapore. So are you writing a review, TVC?

Maybe once I watch all 3. I mean, I don't know a whole lot about these movies, and the three I got are considered classics of the genre, so there's really not much I can say about them. That said, I think I might like to do a blog post on them once I watch em all.

What's King Boxer about? I haven't heard of that one before.

Maybe you've heard of its other title, "Five Fingers of Death". The Onion AV Club ran a really good review a little while ago.

And holy crap. Lau Kar Leung and Gordon Liu can be seen in the recently (last friggin week) released in America Drunken Monkey. This is a relatively recent film even, only a couple of years old. Leung and Liu co-star, and I'll be danged if those middle-aged dudes (Lau Kar Leung is well into his 60's, but sure as hell don't move like he is) can't still bust a move or two. Next-big-thing Wu Jing (the stabby dude from SPL/Killzone) is pretty good in it.

Its excactly like a Hong Kong movie from the 70's but it was made only four years ago, its even got a dodgy (and optional) english dub and subtitles. I was able to rent it at Blockbuster, no going to some niche video store. Its no masterpiece, but its rather enjoyable, lightweight, and refreshingly old fashioned. Give it a shot, why don'tcha?

The One-Armed Swordsman movies with Jimmy Wang Yu are pretty fun. Master of the Flying Guillotine is probably the best of the batch.
