I did not know this until a few weeks back, but apparently the biggest audiences for these games in Japan are teenage girls. They love the cutesy character designs, angsty stories, and the skits that give each character more personality.

I was told this by Japanese high school students who are also huge Tales fangirls. One of them really likes Asch (sp?) from Abyss.

Wish there were some (cute, of course) girls over here in America who were into the Tales series...

I'm sure they're out there, but they're probably mentally unbalanced freaks who dress-up as their favorite male characters for animu conventions. Whereas in Japan, they're just normal HS kids. It's a whole different gaming culture.
