Title: There are so few male college students out there
Post by: Mondain on August 25, 2007, 04:45:35 AM: It's so shocking! Not that I complain at all, obviously... but nevertheless by looking at the people in the various classes and stuff, there really is as ratio of about three women per man when it comes to the student population-- if not four. Select technical majors remain the apanage of men, but apart from that it's striking to see how low is the percentage of male students in most any advanced college.

These dropouts aren't all going to launch their own business to compensate for their lack of education; what's going to happen on the job market of nowadays, where often a mere bachelor's degree isn't even enough to compete with other qualified workers?

Modern western elementary and high school aren't made with young boys in mind and penalizes them a whole lot, as they don't have the patience and the attention span required to sit on a desk in a cramped room all day long, and listen to a teacher speaking monotonously for hours on end, with next to no interaction required from their end. It's easy to see the awful results of this in the subsequent phases of education as the percentage of males keeps on diminishing and diminishing, and as their grades on average are much lower than the girls' grades.

Granted, they need to stop killing recess, but not every boy is an ADHD rascal. It's the mentality of "boys will be boys" that is killing male education. Why have higher standards for yourself, when society gives you a blanket excuse to be needlessly stupid?

in general people around the campus all seem to be pretty timid, so I'll have no problem with being confident and proud around them on every single occasion

Post by: Mondain on October 10, 2007, 03:20:20 PM: It's now been about a month and an half, homework and exam grades were pretty good. Most courses are boring, in some cases the teachers are old farts and talk so softly that the students can't understand anything of what they say. Not to mention that they only read the course notes aloud.

Were it not for the crowds of 70-80 gals to stare at, most of the times I'd leave well before the scheduled course durations.

It's pretty cool, some come and talk to me once in a while. One of them just said that she sorta admired the interventions I did in another course a week ago.

There's a party in mid-October with the other freshmen (more like women) of the faculty and I'm going.

and hey, a quick google search reveals she's now working as an instructor, and gives office location and hours. I could totally stalk her if I were willing to relocate halfway across the country. she was pretty into me at the party last year. or at least my friends who were at the party told me she was trying to flirt and why didn't you respond in kind etc. etc. you should be more assertive blah blah blah, I can never tell these things myself.

I admire their courage, tho it makes me a bit ashamed of my own cowardice. Last week a couple girls picked me up at a coffeeshop with the line "you're cute, come hang out with us" (I never got the cute thing, since when I look in the mirror all I see are my blackheads, acne scars and the bags around my eyes from working 36-hour shifts in front of a computer screen, but I guess some girls don't care about those) and took me to their apartment. for some reason though they wanted to have a conversation about quantum physics which was odd. but they appreciated my charles mingus CD so everything was cool in the end.

Many scholars believe this has been due the feminization of the U.S. school system and enhanced opportunities for women in form of scholarships and such. Also men have always had more options outside of college such as the trades and military service, which are still male dominated. For a long time women have had much more limited options.

Today, thankfully, women can go to college, begin a career, and do not need to depend on marriage for financial security. The trades and military service are still intimidating to a majority of women.

something very similar (girls had very different personalities though) happened to me right about this time last year, maybe it'll become an annual event. goes with the start of the portland rainy season.

not obese or anything, although one was 10 years my senior. they were pretty cute, but I think I liked last year's better. not as attractive but more emotionally affecting.
