- Warhawk: Been waiting a long time. I have a feeling this will become the new staple for online multiplayer gaming in my house. Loved the BETA and cant wait to tear into the full game on Wednesday.
- Dynasty Warriors GUNDAM: OK - not a big deal but this is another notable release this week. I will be playing this on the PS3 as it looks notably better than on the X360.
- LAIR: Finally its here(ships Thursday). Reviews are all over the map - I look forward to seeing what I think for myself.
For the times you need a break from the big screen, just play Monster Hunter 2 for PSP - it also comes out this week.
I really hope that more people near me soon get PSP's. I really want to play MH PSP with other people local!
(as a side note, I logged into Monster Hunter PS2 this weekend to find 500-600 people online in the middle of a Sunday.)
Time for X360 to sit dormant for a while.
-
Based on those games?
No. :lol
-
:lol
-
:lol
-
eh, not really. i'm actually looking forward to playing metroid prime 3 (omg a wii game) more so than any of those titles. i have the japanese verison of DW gundam, and it's a borefest.
what i really want is folklore. i loved the japacrap demo, now i want to play the full thing.
-
Demi, Willco - do you guys even own PS3?
No offence but Im happy to get some next gen games not built on Unreal 3 engine.
-
Yea, it's called a PSX360 - all the games, twice the framerate, half the price!
-
sorry, i love this image too much.

that image is awesome
The only game on that list that looks good is warhawk, and that itch can be satisfied with a ten dollar copy of BF2.
-
:lol
-
Warhawk ($40) and Lair ($38) should be shipping this week, which means I'll get them next week. I wouldn't have time to play them this weekend, since I'm gonna be out on the Washington coast getting my drink on!
Also, if I hadn't imported Gundam Musou back in March, I'd be all over the North American release. AWESOME!! DISTANTMANTRA'S GOTY!!
-

:lol
Lair is awful and this is coming from someone who is the closest thing to a Factor 5 fanboy. Warhawk is moderately fun, but hardly anything to write home about. Frag hit it on the head that other, cheaper alternatives exist. And to tout a niche multiple-platform release is laughable.
Heavenly Sword better be fuck awesome or it's going to be a long year for PS3 owners.
-
i'm going to give lair a chance and rent it via gamefly. i *might* buy the PSN version of warhawk since i have a bluetooth headset already, but i'm so damn sick of battlefield type games. i tested battlefield 1942 & vietnam years ago at EA. got so good at that shit that it got boring.
-
Lair is so bad that the Sony rep came in and started badmouthing it. And his job is to inject happy Sony feelings into us to boost sales.
I have a feeling that he just wants to shoot himself, though. It's always an uphill climb for him in terms of getting folks to buy into the system.
-
Warhawk is gonna be great.
-
I have played Battlefield - it DOES NOT compete with Warhawk.
-
Yeah, it's better.

Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank Future?
-
Yeah, it's better.
No. Not in any-way imaginable.
-
lair was fuckin' UNPLAYABLE at PAX, and it's kinda ugly, too. distantmantra, dude, don't get it. you'll regret it.

I only paid $38, so I could always "rethink" things and return it to Fred Meyer for $60 on a gift card.
-
uh, Battlefield 2 (PC) shits all over Warhawk. What are you smoking?
-
lair's unplayable, sure, but to say it looks ugly is a bit of a stretch.
-
Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank Future?
Uncharted doesn't do it for me. I mean, I recognize that there needs to be some kind of game to rally around; 360 owners did this early on with equally "okay" titles, but I don't think Uncharted is any kind of killer app.
Ratchet & Clank looks absolutely beautiful, but I've never been a fan of the series and it won't start now. I really am hoping Killzone or something will come out and blow me away. For me, getting a PS3 is relatively cheap (I could've nabbed a near mint 60GB unit for $250) and I could easily get one for Christmas or with my new job moneys (yay! soon!), but even that seems like too much for too little.
-
This is a sad week for ps3 still :(
FAIL
Warhawk lol
-
I never played BF2 but doesnt COD4 work the same way? Basically keep playing, gain levels, unlock new shit? COD4!

I've always been a fan of the series and am totally hyped for R&CF! I fully expect it to be the first PS3 game to deliver.

YOU LIKED THE DARKNESS

I can't hate on that. It is likely to be the only good PS3 game this holiday season.
-
The only reason I'm playing Warhawk over BF2 is that it places more emphasis on dogfighting and jumping from land to air. I also want to customize my Warhawk :hyper
I'm totally in on Warhawk, Day 1
Lair looks pretty but sounds bad. I'll probably never buy it.

Yeah, CoD4 is more Battlefield like than Warhawk
-
Yeah, it's better.
No. Not in any-way imaginable.
Warhawk doesn't touch Battlefield.
That said, I'm buying it, because it is the closest thing to Battlefield on consoles. I played the beta and I was presently surprised. If they can keep new content flowing in a timely fashion, it could have a pretty decent shelf life. Let's hope they fixed most of the niggling issues with the beta.

The beta lock-ups were a bitch.
My comments are based on preference. I prefer the world of Warhawk to the world of Battlefield - just more enjoyable to me.
-
It doesn't impact my decision to buy it, but Warhawk got some decent scores from EGM apparently.
warhawk 8.5, 7, 8.5
-
Abrader, why does it matter even if all 360 games use Unreal technology? Does Bioshock really look and play that much like Gears of War?
lair was fuckin' UNPLAYABLE at PAX, and it's kinda ugly, too. distantmantra, dude, don't get it. you'll regret it.
Yeah I played it a little while back. I've been thinking maybe they can patch in a real control scheme at some point. Make a bad game mediocre.
:lol Are PS3 owners that desperate?
Seriousy though, even if all I had were a PS3, I would think long and hard about getting Lair or Warhawk. I just read the PSM review today and it talks about how the Warhawk is fun to use but it is also far weaker than a tank or even a human holding a cannon. That's some seriously wrong gameplay imbalance. Not to mention the fact that the motion controls are so bad that they don't even have it as the default scheme. Also, the graphics are a 6.5/10 at best. Like Prole and Frag said, go play Battlefield instead.
I really want to use my PS3 for something other than Blu-rays but it likely won't happen until Uncharted or Ratchet gets released. Like Distantmantra, I'm pretty sure those two would be AAA or at least close to it by most people's standards. I was going to get Heavenly Sword as one of those "justify my system purchase" titles but it's impossible to ignore the failings of that title.
-

warhawk 8.5, 7, 8.5
the guy who gave it a 7 deducted 1 point because of the price. :lol
i think it was andrew something.

I'm shocked at the amount of apathy directed toward Uncharted. Slam Lair all you want, make fun of Heavenly Sword, that's fine, but Uncharted looks brilliant.
-
uncharted looks awesome. probably the best-looking jungle next to crysis'. the gameplay looks fun too, imo.
-
Uncharted looks like a next-gen Tomb Raider with a male lead. The only concern I had about the game, which was voiced by some gaming press, is that the combat is still kinda rough. I'm hoping that they would focus less on the combat and focus more on the adventure elements. There're already enough shooters, we don't really need another one.

it was joe rybicki
and Dude Raider + Gears of War + Indy = me exploding
it's my absolute dream game with dream scenario design. i'm a tomb raider whore, an indy whore, and i loved gears. seriously, maybe they could put some boobs on the cover to complete the game.
-
im getting uncharted, when is that out anyway. That being said I dunno what else im getting for ps3 lol wtf

as the saying goes, "a fool and his money are soon exchanged for LAIR"

Uncharted comes out in November, right around Thanksgiving, I think.

I like the atmosphere in Uncharted, it's been a while since I've played a pure adventure game that wasn't Zelda, watching the reviews on this one.
-
I wonder if Sony is pushing its developers hard to finish their games because they're in third place and 3rd party suport hasn't been as strong as expected. Warhawk became MP only while Lair and HS are being released despite some very obvious problems. Lair/HS look like they might have been solid B titles if more time had been spent on fine tuning.

Yeah, that's why I'm hoping for more platform/adventure elements than Gears of War action (as Kev puts it).
-
from what we heard about warhawk, it was a total disaster and the mp mode is "salvaged" from incog's mess
edit: and you might be a bit too rough on HS. LAIR is a mess, but HS is scoring as a solid B title almost exactly.
-
I dunno if id hand out a B to a 'mess'.
-
Aren't the only good reviews for HS from Gamepro and Play, which aren't very reliable? I'll at least rent HS but I was really hoping that it would be a keeper. There's still a chance that I'll end up buying it, especially if I can find it for around $50. The HS premise is great but I think those guys too carried away with making a movie than a game. There are lots of cool moves but it feels like you're watching them instead of doing them.

Gamepro, Play, EGM (which means 1up too), PSM. IGN's score was a 7.0, which isn't LAIRish either.
The big difference is LAIR is a complete gameplay disaster, and HS has some issues.
I dunno if id hand out a B to a 'mess'.
...I wouldn't give LAIR a B either.
-

EGM apparently gave it 8, 8, 9.
-
I dunno - i hear ya guys , and i understand the perspective.
I grew up in a gaming generaton before the internet. I remember not wantng to wait on the new magazines to read all of the reviews and just buy alot more stuff, and sell what coudnt make the cut into my collection. sure the GamePro's of the world were generally out on the shelf with reviews to read before the game hit, but I rarely even bought those mags and often just bought based on gut instinct.
Gaming really was more fun back then. I like the suprise and enjoyment/disapointment of new titles. Over the last few generations I have played the worst rated and highest rated games without knowing much about them. My opinions tend to differ grately from the concensus on the message boards because I do not have the observations, or thoughts of hack web journalists on my mind.
For months my PS3 has been my PS2 and PSOne machine while my XBOX360 saw the most new releases...I have been looking forward to, and am excited to play all three of these and really know little about them other than;
- Lair: Only really seen screen-shots and CG. I saw it running at the SONY booth as CES, but didnt feel like waiting behind a line of booth leaches to try it. I am hoping it turns out to be a next gen answer to Drakengard (my current fav Dynasty Warriors variant)...so as long as its as good as drakengard, looks good and gives me some PS3 playtime on the PS3 I am happy.
- Warhawk: Played the beta and before that loved the movies I downloaded on PSN. I am already sold from the beta and can only imagine the final retail game is better. This is my most anticipated game of the three. I expect ill be playing it ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL weekend ;) (except for my 1 day/night trip)
- Dynasty Warriors Gundam: I really like DW, but there are too many releases and KOEI's real history premise bores me - so instead of playing or bothering with Dynasty Warriors, I whore it up with every other crowd slayer/grinder such as Devil Kings, Drakengard, N3, etc... I love the style of play (seeing that death counter rise up in the 10,000's really makes me hard when playing. Drakengard does it so goood, N3 is next) I hve been waiting on a release like this - DW gameplay with a franchise/style I love from the gundam universe. I would get it on X360, but I played both demo's and the PS3 verison looks sharper and has better/more FX on, plus the rez looks higher.
I dont know any of the games will turn out, but I am loving going into them blind, without having read any reviews....finally, time to play actual PS3 games on the PS3....actually having something new to play is nice.
-
Lair/Warhawk look like mediocre nonsense that will be forgotten in 6 months. Gundum? lol
I would like Uncharted though. I love the Indiana Jones vibe, only PS3 game out this year I would get if I had the system. I am bored of Ratchet and Clank. I felt tired of the franchise by the third one on PS2, I got burnt out on it from too many yearly entries.
-
Aren't the only good reviews for HS from Gamepro and Play, which aren't very reliable?
EGM apparently gave it 8, 8, 9.
That's good news. I trust EGM. Except for Shane. He must be the one that gave HS a 9.

I can guarantee you that much. lol
Gundam looked about the same to me on both systems. Maybe it was because I played it at 1080P upscaled on the 360 compared to just 720p on the PS3. It doesn't really matter anyway since Gundam doesn't interest me in the least even after having tried it twice on different systems.
-

It was indeed Shane

Shane shouldn't be allowed to review any PS3/360 titles. Even his co-workers laugh at him for being a blatant fanboy. It's just sad to hear him act like Bioshock is not interesting to him just because it's on his least favorite system. How the hell can you be a EGM editor, own a 360, and not even try Bioshock at all? I can understand if you tried it and then hated it but not even trying a potential GOTY? Otoh, he's super excited about MP, which is from a company that he still is fond of, although not nearly as much as Sony.
-
I don't know why Warhawk gets hated on. It's probably the best battlefield style game on console. Hell, it's better than official battlefield on console!
-

WTF, ONLY PSM rated Warhawk low. The only reason they rated it low was because they thought it was too expensive and it was multi-player only.

I own 11 PS3 disc based games vs. 10 disc based 360 games. Downloads, I own 2X on PS3 compared to 360. Guess which console I play more?? PS3, because it's SO much better.
Lair?
:lol :lol :lol
So what?? There are people who like Lair. There were 360 fans and Wii fans that bought crappy games and call them good.
I wonder if Sony is pushing its developers hard to finish their games because they're in third place and 3rd party suport hasn't been as strong as expected. Uh no, Heavenly Sword is actually pretty good. Lair will be a like it or hate it game. Some have already received the game and felt the controls were great.
DW Gundam = best multi-platform game of the year. And yes, I compared the two in 720p on both consoles, and the PS3 version edges it out (not by much).
-
I don't know why Warhawk gets hated on. It's probably the best battlefield style game on console. Hell, it's better than official battlefield on console!
Well, the few guys here who're not impressed with it so far are PC gamers, including myself. I could see how console-only gamers would find Warhawk interesting just like Socom was interesting for that crowd. Personally, I find the main drawback of Warkhawk to be its lackluster graphics. It looks like a PS2 game rendered in HD, which is extremely disappointing since it was supposed to be a showcase title for the PS3.

It's not that bad looking! I mean, it's not great, but some levels look nice. The beta was a lot of fun.
To me, Battlefield and Warhawk don't really feel similarly or play similarly. It's a very different style, but it definitely isn't mediocre "nonsense."
BOTHER THAT NONSENSE

What are you smoking?? Warhawk looks fantastic graphically, and it's a freaking download. How many downloadable games can you say are that impressive. It's a retail game too because NOT everyone and purchase stuff off of PSN yet.

The game IS a freaking PSN game. Did you understand what I meant. Also, those who played the beta can say it looks way better in motion. Gheesh, this is why I don't listen to PS3 owners.

Uncharted is made by Naughty Dog. Every Naughty Dog game is ace. It will be the PS3 GotY.
-
Mana Knight, wtf would I care that a game is only $40 when I'm critiquing its graphics? If I were a budget gamer, I wouldn't have bought a PS3. And even if you want to focus on value, $40 is far from cheap for a MP only game with no bots.
Also, I heard that Gamestop is doing a trade your old PS3 for a new 360 promotion. Why don't you report that to Sony while the real gamers here continue their discussions?
-
mana knight, evilbore is straight up REAL TALK, please keep your fanboy nonsense to a minimum or your tenure here will short indeed, thank u

I dunno about all of that - the game still looks great to me and even more importantly its fun as hell.

Here's what I don't understand. People complain about Warhawk in price, yet they don't complain about Alien Front Online?? That game was $30, only had three short stages (single player was atrocious). Vehicle selection was painfully limited. Yeah, I actually spent $30 on it and greatly regret it (although the concept is cool).

I don't remember anyone talking about Alien Front Online, period. Way to bring up a DC game neat the end of it's life. That was just about the worst fucking comparison you could've made. Try again.
-
What is Alien Front Online? I've never even heard of this game.

Dreamcast game at the end of the DC era...came with an included mic that plugged into the DC controller and performed poorly...
I had fin online with the game a bit....
I get Mana's point....For $40, Warhawk is a great deal.
As long as the bugs from the beta are fixed the game is solid total.

Alien Front Online is a Sega Dreamcast video game originally released for the console in 2001.
In the game, players use armored vehicles to fight tense battles staged in large, interactive arenas. Players could choose which side they wished to fight for, the aliens or the human defenders of Earth, and could also choose one of three different vehicles to combat with; each having its own advantages and disadvantages. Although Alien Front was fully playable for one person, it was primarily designed as an online game in which up to 8 players (up to 4 on each side) could battle it out. Players move around the arena attempting to blast each other with their weaponry, while also looking for power ups that will enhance their ability to wreak massive destruction. Typically, the game was played for a set number of minutes, after which the team with the most kills would be declared the winners. Being killed while playing the game had no serious consequences (you simply respawned in a different part of the area you were in), but it did reflect on your win/loss score.
While the game was tremendously successful and arguably one of the Dreamcast's most critically accepted online titles, it came out so late in the lifespan of the system, that Sega's free online servers used to play the game moved to a pay model shortly after the game's release causing a tremendous shrinkage in the player base. Soon after, the Dreamcast's online servers went down for good (when Sega officially stopped supporting the console) and Alien Front was returned to being a single-player experience, which was nowhere near as universally entertaining.
While the game was certainly not revolutionary, it does have a place in gaming history as the first console title with online play to allow its players to communicate with their real voices using a supplied microphone attachment. While a player could only send a very short few seconds of his voice into the game, it made the competition much more tangible when vocal taunts and commands could be heard during the gameplay.

Remember that origonally Alien Front Online was to let DC players play against Arcade players....
The DC had alot of great things going for it that got muffled out.
I even enjoyed Outrigger.

The only online game I really put much time into on my Dreamcast was PSO1. I played a demo of Outrigger, but didn't enjoy it.

nothing for me this week. i like dynasty warriors but am totally ignorant of gundam -- i found the demo frustratingly incomprehensible, so i think i'll pass. i'd probably buy lair if the motion controls were optional. they aren't. warhawk fell off my radar when they axed the singleplayer.

Some think I am. ;) I'm not though.
Anyway, I absolutely want DW Gundam. I love DW and Gundam is my favorite anime ever (I absolutely loved MS Saga on PS2, because it was a Gundam RPG). I'm getting Wild Arms 5 for sure this week, but I'll probably get Warhawk first (since my clan is getting the game and I coordinate a PSN gaming group).
