Heh, got a funny letter from some crazy anti-aclu evangelical Christian group, here's some of the funny bits:

I think the ACLU is a great organization, they just get caught up in asinine arguments, when they should be going after bigger stuff like DMCA and the patriot act.

The ACLU makes it such a point that they're willing to defend anyone's right to free speech that they end up defending heinous organizations like white supremacists and whatnot.  They should focus more on fighting against governmental spying and censorship and whatever, but I guess that doesn't grab juicy headlines the same way or something.

for once, an foc opinion i can get behind. the aclu is really squandering their resources by going after local religious zealots, plus doing so is just lazy -- those cases are easy wins. they should really be attacking the suspension of habeas corpus or the new wiretapping laws. localized dipshit religiosity and the small-time fascism it engenders, while nice to see get smacked around, is not worth the effort when our very civil liberties are getting pissed on for political pork.

Defending white supremacist, holocaust-deniers with a jewish lawyer is based on their belief that justice should be blind.

They don't try to piss people off.  If they can't defend people's right to say something then they're worthless.

As for today, I don't think they have a chance against the government

There are a couple of occasions where I think they do try to go into small towns to piss people off. In those situations I just say let sleeping dogs lay. Is it really hurting anyone that Mayor Joe Blow hangs the ten commandments in his office?

They really need to go after the DMCA and other police state shit that is going down now.

How are we supposed to convince the American people that the war in Iraq is wrong when most justify it because "we're killing terrorists!" "If we leave it'll become a haven for terrorists, and they'll setup terrorist training camps."? I think the ACLU is good but as has been said, they won't deal with the big issues, instead going after the weak easily winnable cases.
