milking nostalgia is the best sales technique!

Time makes bad games good and medicore games great, apparently.

But yeah, I have GAF open on the other window and all the virtual console wankery is ridiculous.

Paying for the ability to enjoy games from consoles long ago on the system I have now - IF the emulation is fucking perfect, that is - is better than being a pompous asshole on the 'net, I reckon

The emulation is actually pretty bare-bones and feature-incomplete.

It's been fucking perfect on the PC since about 2002 though.

EDIT: Also, unlike paying for ROMs, being a pompous asshole on the Net is free!

okay yes, I understand that PC emulation is where it's at. I've been playing MAME for a looong time and I rarely see the emulated games that you have to pay for emulated so well, so that's why I would stick to playing them via MAME.

Puzzle Fighter on XBLA rocks my balls. But you know, that has ONLINE play.

Online play, redrawn/HD visuals, a new balanced mode, and the Y and Z modes from the Dreamcast version.  Puzzle Fighter is a lot more than a "ROM on XBLA."  That kind of game I have no problem paying for...hell, online play in old games makes them worth a try.  But the VC stuff is so damn barebones.  There's a few old games I bought, and that's pretty much it.  I'll likely get Landstalker since it kicks so much fucking ass though.  Really all I want on VC is Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3.

Yeah.  WTF x 1000

For this in the PS3 firmware update thread.  People wanted to know what was in the update.

Quote from: Sho Nuff
-Adds VF5 online support
-Makes Lair fun
-Adds 10 hours to Heavenly Sword

And he gets banned for that.  ::) ::) ::)

Even Streets of Rage 2 I bought out of nostalgia has more upgrades and tweaks than if it were on VC.

Not to mention it is cheaper on XBLA than it would on VC.

I need to buy TMNT. When we were playing Streets of Rage 2, one of my buddies brought up the old TMNT games. I didn't even realize that TMNT was on XBLA. And TMNT2 (basically) to boot!

OK, I understand that a great deal of work is not required to drag and drop a .rom file from the Nintendo internal server to the Wii Shop server, but I'm sure you'd all be telling a different story if you'd actually worked on any of these games.

Now now, no sympathizing here!  The competition is enhancing old games, so Nintendo can very well do the same thing.  At the least, make the VC games cheaper.  They cost too much.

Post by: tiesto on September 04, 2007, 08:19:00 AM
Gonna have to go with Groo on this one... the Digital Eclipse portjobs are usually rubbish, I'd much rather have 99.999% emulation accuracy on the VC, not to mention that there are actually a few games on the VC that cost a lot less than they would on cart. I would never buy something like Urban Champion for $5, but Paper Mario for $10 is a damn good deal for instance.

Which XBLA games are the ones done by Digital Eclipse? I know Super Contra is one of them.
Title: Re: Paying for ROMs
Post by: tiesto on September 04, 2007, 09:46:25 AM
Contra, Super C (I prefer the NES versions over the arcade versions), Rush N Attack, SOTN (which isn't bad but the filtered mode looks awful), TMNT, that I know off the top of my head.

Oh, I see... you mean like how all the XBLA games "processed" by Digital Eclipse are totally raped from their original incarnations. I would rather have original sound and graphics intact than shitty tacked on online play that doesn't even work. But I agree that a little effort could be put in here and there.

Sounds like you just had a bad connection, living in Jyapon and all. I played Contra with no hitches with hyp, and Streets of Rage recently with TVC.

Digital Eclipse are largely worthless.  They have their moments from time to time (CCCR PSP, and apparently Puzzle Fighter XBLA), but still, they can lick my balls. That includes Commando 3.

Virtual Console emulation is some of the best in the business, and is just as good as the Sega Ages 2500 packs (done by the same dev as the Sega VC games!  :shh). That's except for the TG-16 emulation, which is consistently sloppy.  Good emulation is more important to me than online play or shitty tacked-on 2xSai filters.

Shitty emulation is shitty emulation.
