Im just wondering what I should be like on that day. There's lots of political fired up people at work, dont wanna irk em by not looking grave enough.

As much as it's been politicized, whenever I stop to really think about what happened that day, I get really sad. I still can't watch videos of the towers falling or news footage from that day without being emotionally affected.

I honestly think the magnitude of the feelings people had about 9-11 fades from east to west. Hell, I dont even remember where I was when it happened, and thats like the first question people ask you about 9-11.

That was a great place to be ::) All these overly-political teenagers in an environment that encourages argument. It was awesome....

I was asleep when it actually happened, my dad woke me up to tell me about it (I was in college at the time, but had no classes that day). The cable in our house was out (because our cable company is terrible, it had been out for like two weeks at that point), so we went to our aunt's house. We sat watching it, mouths agape. We were horrified. My mom and I had just been to NYC the previous summer, and we love the city. It was so incredibly sad. My dad and aunt kept asking why this had to happen with someone as stupid as Bush in office, and my cousin's boyfriend (now husband) who was over there at the time kept talking about how screwed we were gonna be. They were pretty prescient.

I was in US History and we watched it in class. I remember that day because we didn't have to go to band practice. :rock I remember something like we had the same math class or something, and the teacher didn't feel like doing shit on 9/11.

I really don't have sympathy for every single person who dies, even in situations like that. I respect them for going out like heroes though. But it's pretty hard getting sympathetic for someone I don't know.

They didn't "go out like heroes." They were mom and dads, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. They were just minding their own business, working, when some assholes flew planes into their office buildings. Some of them died jumping off the building. Some of them were crushed by debris. Some of them were incinerated by either the ignited jet fuel or by the subsequent fires.
You know, I'm sorry you don't have any feelings of empathy towards the people who died, man. From about 1999 to 2004, I went to New York every summer. The summers before and after 9/11 are completely etched in my memory, because of how much the city changed in the span of a single year. So, yeah, I'm sorry you don't feel anything for the 2,700 plus who died. But I do, and it's just bizarre to hear you being so blase about a situation which not only resulted in massive loss of human life, but changed the political and social landscape of the US, probably for decades. Save that attitude for the Britney Spears thread.

I was sitting in the library when it happened. I overheard someone say that a plane had hit the WTC and I immediately had a vision of some chowderhead slamming his biplane into one of the towers. A television set was wheeled out and not too long after the second tower was hit. Watching those buildings collapse and the hearing further allegations of terrorist attachment is probably the only time in my life that I've felt true dread.

I was in Japan when it happened so all I got was the news. People in Japan weren't as emotional about it as people here. I kept thinking about how often shit like this happens all over the world and Americans never care until it happens to them.

I was at home. I had just taken a break from class and decided to head upstairs. I distinctively remember not hearing any of the many lawn service workers that were always outside at the time; instead I heard the radio on, very loud coming from outside. So I decided to turn on the TV and that's how I found out. The first plane had already hit. I called my brothers up to watch as well, at the time just thinking it was an accident. When the second plane hit I was shocked. After that I remember all the reports about other possible targets, including the Sears building. My mom was in Chicago at the time and I just freaked out.

I woke up that morning and headed straight for the internet, which is what I usually do. I couldn't get to any of the major news sites; I thought that was odd and there must be something up, so I turned on the TV and it was just carnage every channel. I woke my roommate up, she came into the living room and we both sat there, slack-jawed, staring at the TV screen.
I still had to go to work. As soon as I got there, I was sent home. By the time I get back to my loft, a whole bunch of my friends had gathered and we basically commenced the drinking, since we figured this was armageddon. The day was awful quiet.
Since that time, the biggest change in my life is now the small-dicked assholes that used to cut me off in their raised trucks are still cutting me off in their raised trucks, but now they have "freedom isn't free" magnetic (don't want to ruin the paint on this commitment!) ribbons on the back of them.

I'm with Himu on this. I have no sympathy really and thats just because it didn't directly effect me. People died. In the the states in 2003, 42,884 people died in car crashes, but thats just seen as a part of life. The only difference between that and 9/11, I see, is the shock and the magnitude. I don't feel a great disturbance in the force for the magnitude like Obi won and I don't feel the shock because things like this go one in the world everyday and NY to me is just another part of the world. I'd probably feel different if it was Canadian.
Also using 9/11 to justify war and stir fear of terrorism was disgraceful IMO.

I was referring to the north american invension to Panama (my country as you know). The invasion was codenamed Operation: Just Cause, where hundreds of inocents civilians died just because they wanted Noriega. One friend of my father was killed by an effing rocket. US attacked and killed TOO many people and we didnīt do anything to deserve such a massacre. But yeah, after the invasion was over, America had the cynism to call it JUST CAUSE.

funny story, the day 9/11 happened I was watching CNN and they had this analyst on there and they asked if this is something that people will forget in two weeks or if they'll remember it for years. He said it'l be in the news for years. The fact that they asked somebody is a bit effed up.

I'm the same way. I just think about the people who were in the planes or on the roofs of the buildings and stuff, the ones who knew what was happening but knew they couldn't be saved. That scares me to think about.
I was in English class when we found out. My teacher had sent a classmate downstairs to the main office to retrieve her (the teacher's) purse--she never carried it upstairs with her because she had a bad back. Anyway, the girl comes back up and is like "Mrs. B. a plane hit a big building in New York, it's on TV downstairs in the office." We turn on the TV and watch it, and the full crazy doesn't hit until 2nd period economics class where we see the second plane hit and the first tower fall. Insanity.
We live in an area where a lot of people commute the 2 hours to NYC but live here because it's cheaper, and this one girl's dad either worked in the city or in the towers or something. Apparently she was a basket case all day and they wouldn't let her leave school. Assholes.

my friend (who's iranian) was born on september 11. on the week of 9/11 he and half a dozen idiots walked into a starbucks wearing those arab turban things and everybody walked out. it's amazing they didn't get shot.
as for how my school reacted, due to difference in time zone, it was already over once school started and nobody thought it was that serious. tbh, it's not something that really made them nervous or anything. like if you had a relative who worked in the WTC (like a P.E. teacher) they could understand it. they wouldn't expect msnbc reruns from that day to be played 6 years later though.
