What, Universe at War gets no love? :(
-
And this forum calls itself a haven for PC games?
More information about UAW (probably one of the more intriguing games I'm currently looking at):

Universe at War looks great and sort of gives me a Rise of Legends vibe in the way that the different sides seem so well diversified.
Some more awesome RTS releases this fall-
AoE3: Asian Dynasties from BIG HUGE GAMES OMG .
World In Conflict-in stores next week

As one of the many who has only ever played Starcraft in his RTS life, this branching tech tree stuff is crazy.
Vid of AoE3: the Asian Dynasties:

One of the really neat things about UAW is that you can alter and reassign your choices in the tech tree throughout a match to best counter your opponent, who can also do the same. Again, it's only one of the neat things-the whole ways the sides are diversified is the real star of the game from the previews I've read.

After reading this (http://www.petroglyphgames.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5342 (http://www.petroglyphgames.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5342)), I am fucking jazzed. Financial aid check get here quick!

Supposedly the game plays really well on the 360 pad too, and the game features cross-platform play for Live gold members.
I was sold on this game because of empires at war and the fact that they are bringing in an awesome conquer the world mode, which I love in my RTS games.

Take this with a grain of salt, but Petroglyph claims that they have actually had 360 pad players beat mouse and keyboard players.
While I don't think UAW is going to be a huge hit with the 360 crowd (unlike World in Conflict, which I think could be a smash hit if they nail the controls), it is still nice to see someone beside EA trying to bring this bread and butter western genre to the lapsed-PC-gamer 360 fanbase.

As it turns out, I'm getting a ~500$ check sometime next week, a great start to my laptop fund.
-
Frag, is getting a DirectX10 card for a laptop worth it, or could I save 200 bux and just get an 7900 or 1950X or something?
I don't care about crysis. I DO care about UT2K7, newfangled RTS's, and some RPG's (the most taxing of which is NWN2 probably). Are the DirectX10 features of CoH and Supcom worth the extra 200 bux or what?

Like this one?

Professor Prole would be a better judge of laptop video capabilities. I really don't follow that market at all.
-
Bump for Prole.

why are you pinging me? whatever frag says, i endorse.
aoe3 + the two expansions
rise of legends
coh + expansion
a 7950 or X1950 laptop card is better for current game performance than any current DX10 laptop card except MAYBE the recent 8700M GT, which i've never seen benched. that said, my 8600M GT runs the above games like champs, with only coh needing a bump down in texture quality due to my 256MB video ram. the 7950 and the X1950 mobile cards come in 512MB configurations.
laptops are never gonna be ideal for gaming, but any laptop with a 79XX+ or 86XX+ discrete card with 256MB or more RAM will be fine for the next couple years of RTS games at medium-to-high settings. get a good proc if you wanna run supreme commander -- like a 2.0 GHz C2D (T7300) or faster.
-
THANK YOU SIRS
EDIT: I was pinging you because of what Frag said about laptops and performance.
-
I get my sorta-gaming laptops provided for me by work. Mine has a X1700 equivalent in it, and I run CoH fine with medium settings at 1400x1050. Not at a great framerate, either.
The 7900/X1950 parts if they are out there should be very nice if they are good as their desktop equivalents.

That sounds really cool.

Can one be found?
Check that I've found a Toshiba outta japan with an 8700M GT in it.
Fuck it they wont ship it
