Title: evilbore voting channel: wife out of town for three days, what to play?
Post by: Fragamemnon on September 11, 2007, 01:19:42 PM
ok, so my wife is doing vegetation and reptile surveys and won't be back until friday afternoon. Normally, I wouldn't trust forum folk to recommend games that tickle my advanced gaming sensibilities, but in the spirit of comraderie-and to avoid playing company of heroes expansion beta the entire time, I put forth the following choices into the voting channel:

Gothic III-I have a FAQ printed out. I've only played the first two hours and liked it well enough with the community patch. I haven't played an CRPG since NWN2 in January and this might really hit the spot. I can probably finish the game by the weekend.

Civ4: Beyond the Sword - I have two RealmsBeyondCiv games I can jump into (I scored a mean 100k+ score on their last one, report to follow later today once I get the screenshots uploaded). One can never have enough Civ4.

Overlord-Got it cheap, played it for a little bit and liked it. Might be a fun romp for a few days and keep me entertained. I wouldn't mind some lighthearted fare, but it needs to be engaging-I want hours to fly by and not be tempted to fall asleep at 9:30 PM or bake random stuff in the kitchen like I always do when the wife is out of town and I'm bored.

Empires At War-Forces of Corruption-I am thinking about playing through the single-player game as the Empire again. I never tire of stuffy british colonial wannabes with huge death-dealing hardware. Also, RTS is always  :-* ++.

I am also open to other suggestions, though if Valve unleashes TF2 as a beta today this thread will not matter. Also, keep in mind that I'm always playing a game of EU3 so don't suggest that! Only rule is, of course, no console gaming allowed.

CIV4:BTS sounds like the safe choice but I'll go with Overlord if you want to experience something different.

this is tempting. I will see if there was a demo-going from HoMM3 to HoMM4 was like being hit by a train, and not in a good way.

what is the good way to be hit by a train

of your choices, Gothic sounds good. I wouldn't expect Overlord to maintain yer interest

what is the good way to be hit by a train

there is more than one type of train! also, I sometimes use that metaphor when I am shocked by the quality of a product that I was not expecting to be good

frag, the expansion adds random maps! it's in some ways shallower than homm 4 (less factions and units, less hero types), but it also has MUCH better ai (when patched), has BYOO-TEE-FUL production values (seriously; it looks zomg), and the mission designs are ever so much better. (well, the first campaign is meh, but the rest rock.) it is a great beer-and-pretzels map crawl build-and-grind experience (again, after patching).

Three days? go for Overlord  ;)

I think I could either get through 60-70% of Gothic 3 or Overlord in three days.

I have reserved some time for PEGGLE EXTREME tonight OMG I LOVE YOU VALVE.

They basically made some Team Fortress 2/Half-Life 2/Portals levels (ten, to be exact) for Peggle and are including it as a bonus for their Orange Box bundle on Steam.

Holy shit... that's really awesome, well, now I strongly suggest you give into that temptation... go for a classic Ultima, you KNOW you want to!
