"I'm particularly pleased with the tremendous market response to 2K's BioShock," said Zelnick. "It is reported we are the top-selling title at GameStop, less than a month since launch. We have already shipped more than 1.5 million units. Clearly we have a new hit franchise on our hands. And this one was developed internally, and we own the IP. We're proving our ability to diversify Take-Two's product portfolio."
While opining on the GTA development cycle, Zelnick said, "I would say probably roughly an every-three-year [release] schedule would be optimal... I expect we would apply roughly the same strategy to BioShock, because BioShock is shaping up to be a very important franchise. I don't want to say more than that about BioShock because I certainly don't want to jinx it, but I feel awfully good about where that is going."

A huge reason for Bioshock taking off was that Xbox360 demo. It generated a complete wall of buzz that was impossible to ignore even if you had any interest in video games.
System Shock 2 had a demo quietly released, and popped up on shelves just as quietly. Take Two spent a long time marketing up Bioshock once they realized they might have a hit-all those podcasts, interviews, videos, CultOfRapture website, CE Big Daddy promotions-it was all designed to ensure that when they game was ready to make its splash with the 360 demo, that it had the chance to do so. And damn did that demo deliever (and later on the PC).
Marketing matters when working with a new IP or a lesser-known existing one. That was the big difference between Shock 2 and Bioshock's release.

BioShock is actually hyping System Shock 2. I wanted to play System Shock 2 after finishing the game.
EA, or whoever, could have jumped in on this by releasing SS2 on XBLA somehow, or putting it on Valve or whatever service. Something.
-
I shudder at the thought of Bioshock being franchised.
-
system shock 2 remake would be ace. do it EA!
-
Graphics makes a huge difference. Bioshock is one of the best looking games of this gen so far. System Shock 2 had outdated visuals even when it was released.
-
I hope we dont see another *shock game untill next gen.
I hate when franchises get whored out ruined.
-
a 3-year cycle is long enough that I don't fear annualized "whoring" a la Activision
look at the GTA games: many shared elements, but each has its own setting, music, characters, world, and unique flavor
as long as we don't get Bioshock 2: Back 2 Raptcha, I'm all for funding and supporting the dev team to make "Shock-style" games (wrenches, guns, magic, and hacking).

frag is also correct about why Bioshock is a success
not because it's a good game (it is), but because it was WIDELY MARKETED and had an EXCELLENT, WELL TIMED DEMO
this is not really rocket science but you can't really overstate the importance of those two things

I had never heard of the System Shock series until Bioshock, but now I'm interested in playing them.
