Title: TF2 Beta Thread
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on September 17, 2007, 05:20:06 PM
Who's in! When does it unlock! Who's playing tonight!

I will be playing tonight!

Also, my steam list this weekend was interesting. All of these hardcore PC gamers, all playing Peggle. So awesome. (I played Company of Heroes all weekend, more or less).

Edit: I think the pyro dude works best for me. I've always been a monster at close range in FPS games.

I forget my steam name so I'll look for it when I get home. Are you Frag on Steam too?

oh no :(

Do it now, operators are standing by. Also, don't forget that you can preorder the Orenthal Box (it's a STEAL) to get access to TF2 before the release date.

I heard that Eurogamer gave it a 9-which is really awesome news, as they are one of the few places where the score usually is reflective of the product quality.

Yeah I am 'fragamemnon' on steam. I don't usually use voice chat though, since it irks the wife when she is reading or playing World of Warcraft.

I already own HL2, somewhere, but I just bought the fucking Orange Box cause hey, now HL2 is magically on my PC again.

is ep 1 worth playing through?

I think my excitement level is

Portal > TF2 > HL2:Ep2

Is Orenthal a convoluted Orange -> Orange Juice -> OJ -> Simpson reference

I already own HL2 but I'm tempted to do this just to play TF2 early.

Episode 1 is very good. It's also really short, which is great because you can probably finish it in a couple of nights. It's a ton of fun.

I'm also really looking forward to Portal. I hope I can fall through a Portal and then come flying out on a geyser of stars and look around and see the words EXTREME FEVER floating in front of me.

And yeah, bad pun by me. The OJ stuff has me in stiches, it's funny to see the entire news media mesmerized by a retired NFL running back.

okay, another question, uh

I never finished HL2. I made it to Nova Prospket and stopped. How far was I? And is it worth going back to?

About 2/3 of the way through or so. I'd say it's definitely worth going back to, if you have time.

Nova Prospekt is one of the best parts!  Finish it!  You're past the game's only bad part, that terrible highway.
Title: Re: TF2 Beta Thread
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on September 17, 2007, 06:13:22 PM
both vehicle sections were interminable

I also hated the hometown of Professor Ravenholm Killingsworth von Blood.

I can probably enjoy the game if I go back to it now outside of the GREATEST GAME EVARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR hype. and with a PC 50 times as powerful.

I didn't really mind the first vehicle section, although it goes on forever, and it (along with the highway section) is the worst part for frequent load times.  If it was like, half as long and had its action a bit more compressed, I think I would have liked it.  Highway 16 or whatever was sucky all around.

I liked Ravenholm, though.  The only bad part was that it's all too brief.  Great visuals.

There's a brief annoying part towards the beginning of Nova Prospekt with sentry guns, but it's not that bad, nor difficult.  The whole game is kind of on the easy side of things.

I think the sentry guns is where I stopped.

I dunno, Ravenholm was atmospheric but I absolutely HATED its "planks conveniently fall from window to another" level design. it was so ridiculous that it completely destroyed any sense of pacing or horror the game had built up so far. I had lots of issues with that in HL2 in general. All FPSes, really. Bioshock was fine because its rooms and pathing was defined by walls and the environment. It's the faux "naturalism" of artfully placed debris piles and planks that create the One True Path through the entire game that drives me nuts.

Wow, I didn't realize that Valve put in a sort of achievement system into the Steam Community for TF2 for the PC. That's pretty neat.

I agree, we should go back to stacking crates. Old Man Murray would then have to have a revival to restore the Time to Crate review system.

Nova Prospekt is where I left off recently. I stopped for months after reaching Ravenholm. Then even longer after hitting the Highway.

Anywho I bought in on the Beta hype and prepurchased. Now I can give HL2 to someone else.

I would prefer crates to "somehow this room exploded in such a way that the debris forms a clever three-dimensional logic puzzle requiring ingenuity and perseverance to traverse." I'd prefer it if my level designs didn't reverse entropy thank you

I agree with you, really.  In general, I think HL2 has way too much downtime in it, and it sometimes kills the pacing.  I thought the good parts didn't go on as long as they could have, and the boring parts went on way too long.  I also did not play HL2 until the hype had subsided, maybe 6 months after release, and I think I liked the game a lot more because I didn't have to hear people go on about how brilliant it was.

I do think it's a fantastic game (I have played through it, front to back, at least 5 times), but it has some clear areas for improvement.  It's a great action movie-y experience, but it really doesn't have all that much shooting and gunplay, especially considering how long it is.  It also doesn't use the gravity gun to its full potential, but that's forgivable since it was the first game to really have something like that be a part of core gameplay.  I would probably give the game, on whole, an 8 out of 10.

yeah, let me explicitly state, I don't think HL2 is BAD. In fact, I think it's incredibly excellent in many ways.

however, like Bioshock, I feel that it's a bit uneven and far "gamier" than either its creators or proponents would have (or let) you believe.

I also think I suck at playing FPSes, or at least play them bizarrely slowly. I took forever to get through Bioshock. Deus Ex was like an 80 hour game for me. And people say HL2 is short but I know I spent at least 30 hours getting to Nova Prospekt.

I think HL2 is a pretty lengthy game, at least by 2007 standards, when the average FPS/shooter length appears to be about 8 hours.  HL2 still takes me 15-20 hours ish to get through.  Difficult to say exactly, since there's no timer.

I dunno why but I always fall flat on ravenholm. I found everything before that most excellent.

Quick question, I didn't have HL2 installed on the computer I bought Orange Box on but my Steam List previously indicated that I own HL2, its not gonna get confused and credit me with only one copy of HL2 now is it?

No, in fact you can "gift" your HL2 copy to another steam user now. Like anyone who uses Steam doesn't have HL2 lol.

Being that I'm getting Portal, TF2, Ep2, and Peggle Extreme, I really didn't mind that I paid for a second copy of HL2 and Ep1.  50 bucks for all of that is just a steal.

woohoo I did a system requirement check and the results are nice. Well, I failed BUT the only reason is because of my RAM. That'll be fixed in a few dayz when I get my 1GB in the mail. :bow

I played HL2 once. I had downloaded the demo and it had like two areas. One city area (I guess early in the game) where the guards kept hitting me, and then this dark area with crab head guys attacking me. So I had a gun that picked up metals which was able to kill them. It was pretty awesome

Ive been waiting, and double clicking TF2 all day.

Valve said late afternoon to some chucklefuck via IRC according to the TF2 forums. Which are lagged to hell right now.

Oh well, if not for the wait I wouldnt have discovered the awesomeness of peggle, I just ordered the full version. :heartbeat
