I hadnt even planned to go there today!

I'm getting an 8600, although Smooth Groove said it would be wise to just wait for the 8800's price to lower.
-
Id ask TVC or Drinky or Frag too. Smooth may be right but a second opinion from either of those guys is worth it.
-
K I'll ask. What do you guys think? Get the 8600, or wait for the 8800's price to lower since it'll offer way more speed?
You should just wait a little while and get the 320mb 8800 GTS. It's about $270 right now but it should drop quite a bit pretty soon. The 8600GTX is at your budget right now but it's significantly slower than the 8800 GTS.
-
is the 8600 dx10 compat? not that means a whole lot right now
-
Application support: This card ensures top-notch compatibility and performance for games with full OpenGL 2.0 support and full Microsoft® DirectX 10 support, including full support for Shader Model 4.0.
yup
-
Well that removes that qualifier.
-
How much did you pay? I know that the 640mb 8800 GTS is usually much cheaper online.
Aren't you running Vista? It's worthwhile to pay a little extra for the GTX if you're planning to play DX10 games.
-
GTX is quite a bit more extra, and I got a decent price. Course anyone could argue you can get stuff online cheaper, but I got my stuff right away. Thats important.
-
I see you pt since I picked up my GTX at Fry's , but that was at launch. Prices are usually the same everywhere during launch. However, the Geforce 8 cards are significantly cheaper online now. Why do you need a new GPU so badly? For TF2?
-
Cuz I wanted it.
-
Welcome to THE CLUB MAF.
I'd definitely wait out on the 8800s over the 8600 cards. 8600 = replace in a year and be disappointed in performance right out of the box, 8800 = happy for at least two years.
-
Why is the Geforce 8's SLI performance so terrible? The GTS in SLI is still outperformed in many situations by a single GTX. I'm an extreme hardware enthusiast but there's no way I'll buy another GTX just to get another 5-10 FPS at 1920x1200.

8800 CLUB
true nikkaz only
-
I dont have the $$$ to SLI 8800
-
the 8800 club is like the 700 club, only with real talk instead of fake prayer

we only bugger our wallets, not altar boys

I dont have the $$$ to SLI 8800
I would if I hadn't bought a PS3.
Extra 5-10 FPS in PC games > Heavenly Sword
:'(
-
i have an 8800 too bad i don't play many games on my pc
-
Haha dont install videocards drunk. The mobo gave me the one long LOL POWER SUPPLY ISSUE and I assumed that I needed a bigger one. This morning when I was sober I remembered that the 8800 takes an additional power feed lol lol drunk :(

mmmmm, 8800 makes me want to come over and saf on your keyboard. hopefully i'll be building a new comp by the end of year. :-*
-
You've convinced me. I'll wait for the 8800. If TF2 works on Cajole's labtop I should have no problems with it
-
nice
you guys are amking me want to buy a PC just to try pc gaming.
-
God, I wish my job paid more. I got up this morning and wanted to jerk it to the E3 2006 trailer of Supreme Commander. :(
-
MAF, did you consider my offer? I'll just have my friend put it on EBAY if you don't want it.
-
No thanks, I need to upgrade my proc next.

Ok, it's going on ebay when Geforce 9 comes out.
What CPU are you using now? I want a quad core upgrade but I'm waiting for the new 45 nm. This summer's temp was killer even for water cooling. I hope the 45nms will be much cooler.
-
some 3200+ Athlon64 or some shit
-
That Althon64 was great for its time but yeah, you''ll probably need a newer one for games like World of Conflict and Crysis. I guess you'll be upgrading your motherboard and ram too. I don't think they're making any more processors for socket 939 any more.
-
i found him a 4200+ X2 939 for $70, i rokk like a hard cokk at eleven o' klokk with shiner bokk
-
World in Conflict ran fine on my 7800 rig.

You're a good friend. That's a great upgrade from a 3200. MAF, try Oblivion again. I noticed a big performance jump in Oblivion when I went from single to dual core.
World in Conflict ran fine on my 7800 rig.
What do you mean by fine? I can't seem to get the minimum framerate to be higher than 20. It seems to be a CPU-bound issue since the min framerate didn't increse much even when I went from "very high" to just "high". I like my games to stay around 60fps as much as possible and drop to 40fps at most.
-
Fine in that I dont count framerates and there weren't any significant chops and it looked ok.
