Title: Here is my new TV
Post by: TVC15 on September 21, 2007, 02:26:15 AM
http://reviews.cnet.com/projection-tvs/sony-kdf-e50a10/4505-6484_7-31453800.html

While it's not perfect, may I remind you that I got it for 500 beans.  I have used the TV many times before for movies and gaming sessions, and it is probably the nicest television I have much experience with.

I know there's nicer TVs out there, but this fell into my lap.  Cheap.  Really, really cheap.

aren't projection hdtv's supposed to be worse than lcd's, or is the other way around? the features are pretty nice for that price, though.

depends on what bothers you most about the tv's.

for example, the colors might not look so bold on a projection tv as they do on an lcd (this can be the opposite depending on brands, models etc.), but the lcd can't match the projection in black levels, size, price etc.

something good to remember about new tv's is that a lot of it is simply subjective to your taste.

The "Worse" isnt that bad. My LCD > most in blacks so shup. Projections do appear to have less ghosting than straight up lcds

i just remember reading it somewhere. i haven't really compared both types.

mupepe, did you ever buy that $7000 (or something) 720p tv you made a thread about on gaf? :-\

White Man, do yourself a favor and go ahead and get an extra bulb/lamp for backup.  Those things can blink out without warning sometimes, and that way you won't have to wait for one to be delivered.

Sweet TV Special K  :-*

What Hi Def sources do you have?

I might crack and get my 360 this weekend, my hdtv is getting lonely with just my Wii.

Well, of course I have plenty of HD cable but I haven't even watched a dvd on my plasma yet.

Apparently the xbox only outputs dvds at 480i, sucks.  Maybe my hacked xbox does better, I haven't picked up my component cables for it yet.

The only thing game related I've had on my tv so far is Prime 3, so yeah, a 360 would probably blow me away at this point.

My tv is a 720p plasma, they should look fantastic.

How will dvds look in an x360?

I read earlier that the hacked xboxs upscale certain emulators too, I need to screw around with that stuff a little this weekend.

There are a lot of places on the net which sell replacement bulbs, and they usually all have databases you can use to look up your model.  Shop around because the prices swing wild.  Just do a search for "DLP LCD replacement lamps" and take your pick from there.  I don't have one of those TVs, but just from shopping around the various AV forums looking for my next HDTV I've learned it's always a good idea to buy a replacement lamp - otherwise you might be out of a TV for as long as a month waiting for a service call or warranty replacement.

the x360 upscaling is pretty good.  but you have to use vga or hdmi.  hdmi looks awesome upscaled <3 <3

Yah I already bought a couple extra hdmi cables just for that purpose.

My cable box looks a LOT better at hdmi than it did on component, I was surprised.

Makes me sad the xbox and wii don't have hdmi.  At least the 360 has it, I am probably going to go get it tonight.

No point in waiting at this stage, plus Halo 3 plus shitloads of stuff to play on xbla.  It's been awhile since I've had Live, I miss it.

I use VGA and I'm addicted to upscaling dvds

too bad it doesn't work on my Reba dvds  :'(

Sounds good.  The person that sold me the TV actually gave me the same advice, and even showed me how to open it up to change bulbs.  Where is the best source to grab them online?  He left that part out.

He said the one in there should be good for a few more years, but like you said.  That sort of thing has the bad habit of dying out at the most inconvenient time.
