Title: Do players care about the story in WOW?
Post by: ToxicAdam on September 21, 2007, 04:10:34 PM

Basically, every month there is an article in GFW about WoW. Either hyping up the next expansion or going behind the scenes at Blizzard and interviewing devs.

So, after reading every single inch of the magazine while sitting on the can .. I breakdown and read the WoW article. Just for the lust for new words formed together.

I've never played the game... but I get pretty nauseated at the devs fawning over the storylines and how each world is "fully realized" and every rock and tree is carefully agonized over before creating a world.

Do people really look forward to the expansions for the storyline .. or do they really just care about new places to find loot, higher levels and new mounts?

I think people care about the large overall story arcs and seeing characters from previous games be put into the game and the story somewhat expanded from there. Once they digest it all, then it's all about those characters become magic bags of loot.

How quickly does the story move along?  Except for the Beta, I've never played WOW.

wait... there's a story in wow?! i didn't know that. i thought it was like something happens in the beginning--you see lots of cg, and then it's pretty much just gameplay. no story.

i can't imagine people actually playing this for the storyline.

Quests move it along, so to speak, for each person. A notable example of TFT to WoW moving the storyline is probably the story and quests surrounding the Scarlet Crusade. WoW also goes back and expands upon the WoW lore in other areas as well-I thought they did that very well with the whole Ahn'Quiraj thingy.

In the end though, the icons of Warcraft past become the loot bags of the present and the neglected content of the future!

Usually I don't have time to keep up. I can't read a six page manuscript from some needy NPC while in the middle of an instance, which always seems to happen. Once I get out the instance I have time.

nope, I just click through everything and do the quests.  I skim every quest for the location and then off I go lol.

It's lore and why people care about Warcraft lore I have no idea.  It's all the same formula: Dark thing has returned named X, you must do Y to take care of X. Etc etc.

And then you do it and nothing changes in the game. They also use the lore to justify stupid gameplay decisions. Example #1!

There is a Druid spell called Entangling Roots, it is the crowd control for the class.  Crowd Control is one of the biggest aspects of WoW.  Unfortunately, the spell can only be used outdoors which makes it useless in dungeons and many other places.  Why not change this? Because the lore says Druids have more power outdoors, so they only get outdoor ability.  Yet the mobs use the same spell indoors all the time. The response to this? A mighty shrug and whimpering about lore.

The story is lame and how it's used is even lamer.

There is a few interesting threads of story, but sometimes they just never finish them.  An alliance quest involving a burned down building and a crazy hobo is actually a bit intriguing, but then the quest line suddenly stops because they didn't bother ever finishing it.

I find parts of Warcraft lore interesting and when a quest is related to something I care about I appreciate the time they've spent on quest text / events.  Most of the time the game is just about killing using the same basic attack pattern and collecting xp/loot.
