So I went to the video store, got Volver, and looked for something a bit more visceral that I could, you know, get wasted watching. . .and the Blu-Ray landscape is a complete fucking wasteland. There's very little that's good on BD, and I *own* most of it and have little interest in double dipping at that price point.
A bit frustrated, I waddled over to the HD-DVD section, where lo and behold there's a decent selection of pretty good stuff. More catalog releases, less movies with fucking DANE COOK aka WILLCO'S JESUS, and actual honest to fucking god Oliver Stone movies. Why has Blu-Ray pretty much held the "lead" for a full year, but there are extremely few good releases on the format compared to HD-DVD. I guess I have one last purchase to make to be tru HD.

Yes. The Bourne trilogy is worth it alone. Besides you get like 6-7 movies with the drive, depending on where you get it. It also comes with the remote. I think the Sony BD remote alone is worth $25. Also, it works with the PC like I've mentioned before. I posted a good deal before but I'm not sure if it's still available. There should be plenty more deals online since MS seems to be pushing sales of that drive pretty hard.

HD-DVD rawks, give it a chance white man.

Jesus, can't Sony do anything right? I thought that up until the recent megaton, BD had been considered to be slaying HD-DVD?

That was only because BDs were selling better. But if you're talking about transfer quality and overall selectoin, HD-DVD has been winning most of the way.

not anymore, check out sales numbers.

By all accounts (and I mean ALL) Blu-Ray should have the superior selection of content, but instead of going for what sells players they went for...uh...I don't fucking know. Playstation brand loyalty?
Part of it had to do with the BD camp's stubborness in not using the far superior VC-1 codec. VC-1 is why many HD-DVDs looked better than BDs in the beginning. Also, BD players have been really slow in getting Java to work which is why movies like Batman Begins are on HD-DVD now and not BD. It's also why 300 also has more extra features on the smaller capacity HD-DVD than on the BD.

I saw at least 2 Dane Cook-related Blu Rays! That's their strategy.

TVC, did you ever check out the martial arts stuff that I was telling you about?

No. . .my usual DVD haunt is generally good alla round, but they are only in depth in certain subjects (mainly what the clerks like). Since there are no black people in Seattle, the kung fu selection is kinda lacking outside of the Major Necessities.
-
lol dont fukin buy into hd-dvd or blugay. I mean you already own a ps3 so why not go blugay for now I spose..lol :(

HVD future am come.

:lol
My first day in undergrad, I met this black guy from Africa who spoke flawless English. I guess he was one of those rich Africans that were in Coming to America. When we were chatting about what we like to do, all he talked about was how much he liked watching Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. I guess it's in black people's genes, regardless of where they're born.
Did you at least check out Tony Jaa on youtube though? He truly is amazing. Too bad he seems shy about coming to Hollywood. Critics seem to like him despite the fact that he's barely done any acting in his movies so far.
-
I forgot about the free movie deals, can someone list the best one?
I might get an hd-dvd add-on if I can get it close to free, I mean, why the fuck not?

yes you do. hd dvd's have tended to look better and they have the better movies. BD might have the bigger blockbusters, but most blockbusters suck ass.

If this were GAF, yes.

Hmm, the "Buy HD-DVD add on and get 7 free movies" is pretty limited at Amazon. Are any other places offering a deal like that?
Looks like you get King Kong, a choice of one good movie, and 5 pretty bad ones imo (although there are 2-3 I could live with.) I assume that mail-in offer for the five free movies is the same anywhere they are offering this :-\
-
The thing i like about HD-DVD is that, they are all REGION FREE.
importers should be happy with it.
too bad, Japan are sticking with Blu-Ray, so no importing animu for you.
-
i personally am let down by both HDDVD and Blu Ray.
I just watch normal DVD's upscaled unless the BD or HDDVD version is just free or something (netflix)
not paying more to rent HD dvd's.
-
You bought Volver, which is the only Blu-Ray release I have seen that is worth owning. So the answer is yes, you do need a HD-DVD player.
The Lives of Others, Weeds, and Infernal Affairs all say "Hey there, bitch."

Do you normally have to pay more to rent next gen discs?

I have them all on DVD, with no intention of rebuying. Upscaling is decent enough that, aside from a few special things, rebuying is out of the question.
Watching Raiders of the Lost Ark on the big screen, even upscaled, was :o
-
Yeah, I'm not too keen on rebuying stuff I already have on DVD, but I do it every once in a while.
Black Book comes out tomorrow. You're a Verhoeven fan, right?
-
:bow
for real real.
hd dvd is for my new purchases. i am only double dipping on very few older titles until those fucking discs become cheaper.
-
I'm rebuying Oldboy on Blu-ray, and I asked for all the Harry Potter movies on Blu-ray, and I'll probably get Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door when it's announced, but that's it for double dips. Everything else are either new releases (Black Book, Ratatouille, Paprika, Order of the Phoenix, Superbad) or things I never bought on DVD (Die Hard, Robocop, Blade Runner).
-
i'd consider rebuying stuff like fight club, but i wouldn't rebuy movies like glengarry glen ross or 25th hour for that matter.

Fox needs to put Fight Club and Moulin Rouge on Blu-ray ASAP, I'd buy them in a heartbeat.
... and here I was saying I wouldn't double dip on many... crap.

i just checked my dvd collection and i'm probably going to rebuy fight club and collateral. i'm buying heat and maybe maybe miami vice if it's cheap, but the last one is universal so i doubt that's happening anytime soon.
