Title: I Join And Exit the Waggle Shame-apalooza In Less Than 24 Hours
Post by: Eel O'Brian on September 22, 2007, 10:02:53 PM
Bought a Wii.  Took advantage of Gamestop's extra 30% and traded in a bunch of crap I had accumulated over the past year, plus that grimy ass gamecube Wobe sold me, so I only paid about $150 Realbucks ™ for the system, component cables, and RE4.

Gamestop employees are all fucking snarky douchebags who act like they're doing you a favor by answering simple questions, btw.  If I could round up every one of those dickblisters and throw them in some sort of nerd concentration camp I would, and be their Amon Goth.

i am disappointed in you. you have just waggled the knife deeper into the gut wound given to Real Gaming (tm). for shame. for shame.

I don't think $150 could really help my PC.  I can probably still run it on the lowest settings, though.

Here's my dirtiest secret - know why I got it?  Not Mario Galaxy, not Zelda, not any Nintendo wagglefest mini-game collection....

I bought it for Medal of Honor Heroes 2.  I can't help it, this WWII addiction.  I think I have a problem.  It hasn't gotten so bad that I am willing to pay full price for Hour of Victory, though, thank the lord jesus christ.

I don't even know what the fuck trauma center is.  I don't keep up with the Wii.  I just read some stuff on MOH Heroes 2, saw that it would have a light-gun style on-rails mode, and collected up all my bullshit to trade.

is it fun? I mean ive played it but there didnt seem to be much to play on it that was decent. I mean even PS3 has better options.

I mean I hear metroid 3 is good, but its an above average game, then whats left? Wii sports? I dunno guys.

I'm only interested in Paper Mario, Zelda (gotta try waggle at least before I treat myself to delicious traditional controls), and Prime 3. Plus Galaxy on the horizon, and that No More Heroes I suppose.

Post by: etiolate on September 22, 2007, 11:40:22 PM
Metroid Prime 3 is above good or great sort of game.  I've played Wii Sports, Metroid, Madden and now Elebits and it's made me forget my MMOs.  And playing Wii Sports makes it hard to go back to old controls.  I want this feeling in games now.

I still have a list of Wii games to check out.  Sonic, Rayman, Wario Ware, SSX Blur, MySims, Red Steel, Super Paper Mario, Zelda, Excite Truck, Monkey  Ball, Trauma Center and Kororinopa.  There are 360 games I want to play, but the list is shorter and the PS3 list is no list at all.  Oddly, the Wii software has the mpst variety in it.

There's a lot of variety to my poos every week, doesnt mean much.

I play a lot of different genres and get bored playing the same type of game over and over, so it's something I look for.  Even though I wasn't satisfied when I got a playstation years ago, I still needed it because the n64 had a narrow library.

I like Zelda and MP3 on WII so far.  I've only played a little of MP3 but it's more fun than I expected.  The visuals are much better than I expected.  It's too bad that Nintendo didn't put a scaler in the WII or have more VRAM because MP3 would look pretty decent in HD.  The other games I've tried are average at best.  I guess Mario fans would enjoy Paper Mario but the pace was too slow for me.  The graphics in Paper Mario actually look pretty good on a HDTV though.  I think Cell-shaded/ anime-like graphics hide the Wii's lack of power more gracefully.  I so far haven't had much fun with the WII but I'm okay with the purchase since many of my non-gaming friends/relatives love to play with it.

Smooth, the weird thing is I know hard-core xbots who loved (and bought) pretty much every major 360 game and then they say the Wii looks pretty awesome.  Granted, they aren't huge graphic whores and don't care about HD but it's still pretty weird.  I've played Wii with them and so it's not like they don't know what the wagglewand feels like.
Title: Re: I Join the Waggle Shame-apalooza
Post by: bork on September 23, 2007, 03:35:29 AM
It's weird; I play my PS3 more, but honestly the Wii has more games worth playing on it currently compared to the PS3.  But the system just sits there most of the time, unless I feel like playing Punch-Out or something.

I got Mario Strikers Charged and SSX Blur recently and have been enjoying them both.  I still need to get to that Gundam game, too.  And don't forget to check out Resident Evil 4 and Excite Truck!

The logic of a Wii owner is something like this:

Quote
"Wow, I own a Wii, its all new and white, like those APPLE COMPUTERS, but not nearly as expensive. Lots of clean-cut tweens play the Wii in commercials, I am in on a new and hip thing. Im not a fuddy duddy. I reject proven formulas to embrace jumping around like a damned fool."

Quote
"Wait, my friends who actually play GAMES dont like the Wii."

Quote
"Well I paid money for this and to avoid feeling foolish I will back up my purchase and cite the millions of Alpha Moms that have bought this for the evenings when Pictionary, Boggle, and Lifetime Movie Marathons are just not enough.

*4 months later*

Quote
"What do I think of the Wii? Well I havent played it in a while but it:

A.) Didnt cost 600 dollars
B.) Didnt break down

So while I guess I dont feel anything in particular about the system, I want to avoid feeling foolish.  I think the Wii is awesome. I will now back up how awesome it is by naming the single above average title released in the last 4-6 months and then make vague references to innovation and possible waggle implementations I dreamt up after hitting my head on the sink while getting off the toilet."

I'm not sure on Elebits yet.  It uses the wiimote very well, but the levels need a dash more variety.  It's a game that you can feel there's depth with, but I haven't really delved into it yet. Initially a large majority of the levels play the same, though the "don't break" and "don't make noise" levels require softer play.  The majority of the fun is just grabbing things and throwing them around.  I'd compare it to the frantic search you make when you've lost your keys and need to get to work, but you're searching with a grav gun and hold no regard for a clean house.  I grab a hamper, turn it over and shake the shit out of it hoping for some Elebits to fall out, then I take the laundry that fell out and pop it in the washer and turn it on and a bunch of Elebits shoot out at me.

Impressions:

It's small.  Way smaller than I thought it would be.

It's very well packed in the box.  In fact, I think this is the nicest packaging for a console I've ever seen.  Everything has its own little compartment in two "drawers" that slide out of the box.  Very compact and organized.  Nice manuals.

It's easy to hook up.

The component makes it look...okay on my little HDTV.

Wi-Fi.  Easy to connect.  Built in.  That's good.

Fucking around with the Mii thing was fun for about ten minutes, but I will probably never make another one.

Wii Sports is actually fun in five minute chunks.

RE4 has a decent control scheme - I like that you can instantly use the knife, and the quick turn is intuitive.  It doesn't look that great, though.

I want to play MOH Heroes 2 on it, but I don't know about keeping it until November.  Plus, I have a PSP, and MOH will come out for that.  But the on-rails shooting sounds like a lot of fun.

I dunno.  After Mario Galaxy, and MOHH2, what else is there?  I don't really have a lot of interest in MP3.  I went nuts when I bought the gamecube from Wobe, so I have a lot of GC games, and the DK bongos, and a wavebird, and a wired GC controller I could throw in an ebay package deal.  I could possibly come out of this smelling pretty sweet since I only spent $150 (plus tax) Realbucks™ on it tonight.

I'll think about it.  Waggle might be one of those things that's only fun at someone else's house.

I haven't played a Wii game in a while, aside from Super Paper Mario and Kororinpa... I have no interest in Prime 3... all my time lately has been taken up by Blue Dragon, and I have a MAJOR backlog of RPGs from the PS2 generation. By the time I'm through with those, all 3 systems should have a healthy library of games.

There are a few things to keep in mind for next year.  No More Heroes, NiGHTS (jonnyram on gaf said it was really great at TGS), Mario Kart Wii with ONLINE play, Red Steel 2 (yeah yeah, I know–but at least keep an eye on it, they might make the second one decent.  They could  implement the same controls as Prime 3 AND add MP, and it'd be a pretty great game), Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers looks like it'll be great from what we've seen, and probably some mor stuff to be announced in the next few months.

Also, don't forget about Smash Bros, if you're into the series at all.  And the prospect of the WiiWare games could be great.  There's been one revealed already, looks like this:

There'll be other announcements of more games soon.  Nintendo usuaully has a big Nintendo central event in October, that's when I expect to see a looot of news.

NiGHTS plays almost exactly like the Saturn version did but the frame rate is really awful, FYI.  I dunno how to judge that shit, but it looks like Shadow of the Colossus at times, and I hated how framey that game was.

N64 had great titles, just not enough of them.  The best N64 games were better than the best PSX games.  Nintendo's games on the N64 contributed a lot to 3d gaming, IMO.  N64 was a nice complement to a PC equipped with a 3dfx card.  GC was completely owned by PS2/360 though.  The GC is considered to be the most reliable hardware of last gen but that's probably due to the fact that it's hardly ever turned on.

Yeah, fuck this system.  The control scheme is too imprecise and frustrating, no matter how much I tweak it.  That won't be good for any FPS, no matter what kind of "movement box" they put around the crosshairs.

I'm gonna get together a list of what I have with all the GC stuff, come up with a reasonable price, and let you guys have first crack at it.  If no one here wants it, then it's going on ebay sometime next week.

Well, I wouldn't have much use for the GC stuff without a Wii or a GC.

What setlled this for me was I bought Rayman Raving Rabbids (used) today.  I figured it might be fun, but it really wasn't.  That fucking cow-tossing game...I know when I hit the button to toss the cow, but it wasn't registering very well with the system, so I kept throwing the cow into the crowd.  I quickly said "fuck it" and put it back in the box.  Lesson learned.  Waggle not for me.  Not even with a WWII game.

Okay, here's what I've got:

1 Wii

1 set of Gamestop Component Cables

1 Wavebird GC

1 set of GC Bongos

1 Wired GC controller

2 GC memory cards

RE4 Wii Edition

Rayman Raving Rabbids

Paper Mario GC

Super Mario Sunshine GC

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat GC

Chibi Robo GC

Viewtiful Joe GC

Eternal Darkness GC

Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2 GC

couple of demo discs

I figure $300 for the whole package, $10 shipping.  The Wii, component cables, RE4 and Rayman come to $335 retail.  All together there's more than $450 worth of stuff in there if you bought it from Gamestop.

Yeah I dunno, N64 had a few awesome games, but PSX had Wipeout 2097, Wip3out, MGS, FFVII, VIII and IX, Kula World, Resident Evil 2 & 3, Castlevania SotN all of which were great and had superior gameplay to anything on the N64

Sometimes you just know when something's not for you.  The whole time I was playing RE4 I kept thinking "You know, I could just pop in the PS2 version and not have to concentrate on aiming this wand the whole time."  That, combined with the fact that it's basically a party system and most of my friends don't even play video games anymore...I'm gonna take MAF's advice on this one.

RE4 sucked for me when I played it on GCN but I loved it on Wii.  It changes the way you play so you may want to try it with different weapons (especially don't use the rifle).

You have to be more open-minded when you play Wii.  You have to re-imagine the different reaction times and then it becomes fun.  but if it's because there's no games then yes, you have a very good point.

lol, is that how you guys justify playing average to at best above-average games? The artificial virtue of being open-minded?

no, it's really not that complicated.  you get used to playing wii and it becomes fun.  it's not hard to get used to it but it just takes time.

Damn, I would have bought it since I'll need something to play the new Fire Emblem on.  And Mario Galaxy, I suppose.

edit: Well, maybe not.  I don't really want anything else in there.

I'd compare it more to holding a dildo attached to a analogue stick by a wire for a few hours, you are used to that.  right?

I dunno whats worse. Spending two days with a Wii and getting rid of it, or spending 200 hours with WoW before writing a scathing review.

Nice etoilet.

COMEDY GOLD

This thread is one for the archives.  Perhaps the first gaming thread worthy of such an honor.

I'm no sycophant, I just didn't care for the system.  I was unaware that this was an "either/or" situation.

I don't know if I'd be so quick to sell off the system.  You should try out some more titles first...

It's not an "either/or" situation.  I don't think you would like the system if your friends stopped playing games.

I hate to say this, but Wii Sports could probably get his friends back into games.   :-X

Wii Sports is challenging single player, it's just has limited playtime per outing in single player.  I sort of play it in between games.  I also play it to see if others' Mii's suck in baseball or not.  if their Mii strikes out a lot, I kick them off the team.  The difficulty curve gets tough surprisingly.  I can barely get hits off the AI pitchers now.
