Your wife also hasnt heard you over Ventrilo

:(
-
oh, and thanks to fatalt and eel_o_brian for all their troubleshooting assistance, and to eel for setting up the server. you rock faces.
-
We should try this another weekend or weeknight, see if we can arrange more users.
-
I wish I had a microphone :'(
-
Use some of that useless Wii money to buy a cheapie. Prole was using a $10 one and it worked fine... after he figured it out
-
I was using a busted up old Xbox headset. Not optimal. I had to press it into my ear and the mic seemed to be picking up a fraction of what I was saying. The server works fine most of the time. A bit laggy, but, you know. I need a new computer headset, I guess.
-
does this work for mac users? last time i tried to join a ventrilo chat, it gave me the finger because i was on my macbook
-
No idea if it works, but there was a universal binary at the ventrilo site.
-
yeah, i got the mac client, iirc last time we did the evilbore ventrilo thing (i think it was toxicadam who provided the server info) the server just wasn't set up for the mac client or something. wouldn't let me connect :'(
-
Sorry I wasn't much fun as a conversationalist, guys. I was trying to get a grip on recording, and failing miserably. I need tech help.

Yes. The only reason Mac users can't connect to some vent servers is due to an improper codec being used. This server should be fine.
Eel, what problem are you having with recording?
-
I can't get Audacity to record myself and the conversation at the same time. It doesn't support that type of recording without the solution of extra hardware. I probably need two sound cards, from what I've been reading. I can record everything in Ventrilo with no problem, but then I have to re-record the track in Audacity.
There are other problems. Noticeable lag (at least on my end), echoing (this will not be a problem if everyone wears a headset or headphones, I believe), and background hiss. I think if we all set up correctly this won't be a problem. We'll probably have to lower the audio quality a little to lessen the lag, etc.
I think if:
1. Everyone wears a headset or headphones
and
2. Everyone adjusts their settings correctly
the vent server will do fine. It'll just be a pain in the ass to re-record everything through Audacity so I can edit it.
I found out the VGS guys use some extra hardware, and record their shows through skype. I thought they used teamspeak, but was mistaken. The VGS sounds pretty good. Seems like everywhere I look most people are using skype and Hot Recorder or some other program. Audacity doesn't dual record, so people just use that for post-processing. We may have to go to skype for the actual podcast itself, if ventrilo doesn't provide the necessary sound quality. That means we wouldn't be able to have so many people in the cast, but maybe that's not such a bad thing because even with the few on last night there was a lot of overlap in the talking (I was probably the most guilty of this).
Skype has its own set of problems, but everywhere I look most podcasts with multiple "hosts" seem to use that as their solution. I'm just not skilled enough to take a bunch of recorded tracks and synch/edit them. I could maybe do a half-assed job of it with two tracks, but more than that would just be overwhelming.
What does everyone think of Skype? I've already paid the Vent server for a year, so that's still there if anyone wants to just chat. You guys are welcome to use it while I figure this shit out.
Anyone who wants to use it just PM me for the login.

We need to start this back up again. Eel do you still have the ventrilo server? You said you paid for it for a year.
