I used to all the time during the Dreamcast days. Now, I only do it for free stuff or if an online retailer is selling it for cheap (Family Video).

Think the last game I actually pre-ordered was Odin Sphere... which I haven't even touched

Not much need to unless you are picking up a limited edition or a game with a small printing (portables, Japanese releases, etc.).

I've only pre-ordered a game twice.  I've been playing games for 20 years.  I usually shop a local video game stores were they don't push you to pre-order games.  I'm not giving any company an interest free loan.  For those who want limited editions and pre-order bonuses I could see the value in pre-ordering.
