I dont really like the robotic voices stuff as much. I dont care too much for stuff like daft punk and the like either.... a few songs in my entire library - maybe? but every song on an album sounding like battlestar galactica gives me a softy.

I forget how I got into Booka Shade - .....

I find Villalobos' stuff generally sounds really organic, at least when compared to other minimal. I definitely recommend checking out Achso, the first track, Ichso, is especially killer. His new Fabric is the shit too.

I'm currently listening to Joy Division's Closer. I always forget just how amazing it really is.

He's definitely got his own distinct flavor of minimal that keeps it more interesting than your standard "faucet dripping for 8 minutes" sound of some of the stereotypical minimal. The guitars and bells in Waiworanao :heart I find most of my favorite minimal comes from the South Americans rather than the Germans.

I've never found C-Rayz that great of an emcee or Sharkey to be that great of a producer, but together they really push each other into making something great.

Definately had to fix the genre on this.

Bass Communion is ambient/trance and most certanly not dance....it got tossed into dance genre because of my bass communion vs muslimgauze CD's.

I know you guys gotta be turnin more than this. Take the time to post your long-play sessions.

For me this is like the return to listening to LP/EP's etc.. after a long tour of random genre playlist listening...you know driving to work? Set the machine to electronic/random....going to bed? turn on random Trance, etc...

So getting back into listening to full length albums is pretty wkyd. There are themes etc to follow that really enhance the listening experience. E-distrobution killingf liner notes was not cool - the stuff should be included if people wanna sell MP3's right.

I find long-play record/CD listening more satisfying than watching episodic/cliffhanger television. Records >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> movies >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TV

The production is simply amazing, but sometimes it feels like a bummer with MF Doom "rapping" over stuff. Yes he does great on many tracks such as Accordion and All Caps, but overall the album is brought down by his craziness. The Rainbows beat is so fucking awesome, I want to hear a better able rapper tackle it. I'd love to hear Mos Def on it actually; his abstract singing/rapping style seems better fit.

Still a good album

Listened to it from beginning to end last night (well this morning at 4am) and I'm impressed. Doom is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists. I had read that it's best to get introduced to MF Doom's brand of alternative hip hop through his more accessible albums, such as Mm Food and the Madvillian release Madvilliany. I really liked both of those albums so I decided to give Operation Doomsday, this 1999 debut, a careful listen.

The album was released in 1999 on the cheap, which is an understatement; the mix quality is low compared to 2004's Mm Food, and the vocals sound even messier than usual for Doom. Yet despite the technical problems the album still manages to emit a sinisterly great album; it's like hearing the ascension of the villian, an origin rooted in madness lol. The production is pretty awesome imo; while most rap albums seem to focus on samples from the 60's and 70's, Doom focuses on a mix R&B 80's songs and the trademark cartoon samples. It's an awesome combination and sounds quite unique.

Standout tracks:
-Doomsday (Doom and Sade? Sign me up)
-Rhymes Like Dimes (Doom delivers a quite energetic flow over a jazzy beat)
-Go With the Flow (gives me flashbacks to Midnight Marauders)
-Red and Gold (the beat is simply amazing)
-Tick Tock (a hypnotizing song built around a Beatles sample)

...fuck, get the album - every song is worth hearing.

The last half of This is Hardcore is mostly trash and would've been waaaay better if they'd swapped "I'm a Man" and "Sylvia" for "The Professional" and "Ladies' Man". It might be heresy but "A Little Soul" never really gelled with me either, it would've made a good B-side and "Tomorrow Never Dies" would've been a good replacement if the lyrics were reworked a bit.

His n' Hers is one my favourite albums of all time, but they could have replaced the two awful songs, "Someone Like the Moon" and "She's a Lady" with pretty much anything that's on the outtakes disc. "Deep Fried in Kelvin", "Seconds", "Your Sister's Clothes", "Street Lites" and "You're Not Blind" are all fantastic.

My buddy brought his laptop over earlier tonight and we started to trade some music. I ended up with the one of various MF Doom aliases King Geedorah's album Take Me to Your Leader and that Victor Vaugn album.

I'm enjoying pretty much most of all the music I'm listening to now. Lupe's album is definitely the highlight of 2008 hip hop. K-OS is a really talented, I'm disappointed I've slept on him for so long. Miles Davis, Gil Scott-Heron, Fela Kuti and other stuff is perfect study music. The electronica/instrumental/pop stuff is great for going to sleep to!

The focus of this for me anyway is listening to full albums and EP's.

Its like I have so many many many LP's but once you go digi people have a tendency to hit 'random' on the player - or if they only pirate music maybe they dont have full albums - or know the intended order or anything - they just have some tracks which arent the same as listening to the full album end to end like the artist intended.

This thread in addition to just asking "what are you listening to?" (as I like to know what people are playing) serves as a way for me to spearhead a diligent effort to listen to my records, ep, etc as they were intended.

They lose soul if they become just a bunch of random tracks.

Do you get into listening to full albums? OR are you a random track kinda guy?

Post by: abrader on February 06, 2008, 05:01:33 AM: as far as the pix go - I have an automatic script that pulls the album art and track listing, renders an image and then posts it to that xs.to host....I dont touch the pictures its all automatic for the most part - I resize the capture selection as needed but thats it..

I can only make it work right with xs.to the way I want because that site doesn't require an account or login - you just HTTP up a pic and it gives you a URL for it anon style.

i like the pigeon detectives, but my issue with them is that i discovered them right before i discovered the wombats, so i haven't felt the need to go back to PD for my jangly brit indie music because the wombats is damn near perfect to me

I remember back when I was in college and really poor id spend al of my money on as manay records as possible on payday...id eat nothing but rice, bread and vitamins so i could afford more records.

Id come home and sit and listen to each one end to end while examining, reviewing and reading every inch of the jacket.

Even now when i listen to records I give it the attention that a movie gets...i tell bitches to shut the fukk up and turn of the ringer on the phone....and i still look at the lovely lovely album arts and contemplate the face value of it all....

I want people who love album arts and listening to LP's to pony up here.

trance - is al quiet experimental, acoustic ambient, quiet bleep pop, etc....

industrial - refers to the core industrial sounds such as throbbing gristle, merzbow, NON or anything else that will clear a room like a sonic bomb - only for the hardcore. This genre DOES NOT include kiddie pop industrial like Front 242, etc...thats dance music - this is audio bondage.

electronics/dance - for me is stuff with a beat that most people would accept as >music< where as only niche power listeners can take on the industrial/trance listening genres. electronic/dance trance fits into this category for me.

soundtrack - movie soundtracks - "Mouth ov the night" "charlies family" "bioshock OST" "Technosoft game music collection 1 thru 15" etc.. ;)

alternative & punk - for me is anything with guitars, vocals, 80's pop, etc.....stuff i liked when i was a teeny bopper or my good time oldies (laundry day music) this is like Bowie, flam punk, punk, pop industrial (weak stuff people like to call industrial like front 242, skinny puppy, etc..) this is a large yet least listened genre for me - especially when im in an LP mood. my listening genre 'trance' contains great symphonic masterpieces.....>alternative & punk< albums are a bunch of songs ;)

country - this is my personal listening genre for my self recorded/composed collection of over 5,000 pieces of music.

Awesome fucking album. Before they were beefing and before they both blew up. Great flows and good beats, this chopped and screwed is probably one of the best C&S albums I've heard. The beats and flows work perfectly for it. A must scope. It's way better then their solo shit IMO.

Suffers from the stereotypical problems of prog rock to me, mainly songs that go on for too long. I'm all for epic songs, but I'm not for songs that are lengthened by random noise. Overall it sounds like there's an absolutely amazing band/album hidden in here somewhere, I don't know if I can find it. I like it but can't help but think damn, I should love this thing but I don't. Amazing drumming but I'm bummed at the lack of guitar solos. Eh, it's like Pink Floyd without the songwriting prowess

Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium

Their musical blueprint is based on throwing a bunch of ideas at the wall hoping something sticks. In. Every. Song. There's almost no focus or restraint, and often a song might have four or five different directions thrown in at random moments. Some work, many don't. It's a shame because everyone in the band is a god damn virtuoso, the melodies are great, I like the singer, etc. But jeez they need a producer to sit them down and smack some god damn direction into them.

Well, it's EDM and usually EDM artist albums aren't up to slack... if I had to pick an artist album though it would definitely be Guy J's, though. I nominate compilations all the time though! :P

It sounds like you're mistaking flamboyant guitars for songwriting. If you really need your guitars in the front, try KC's Larks' Tongues in Aspic or Red, both of which I find to be superior to ItCotCK anyway (although not for the same reasons you might).

Or hell, you could always just skip all the prog stuff for now and go right to their excellent 80's work w/ Adrian Belew:

I'm still listening to the album and like it more than I initially did; Epitaph is a great song, obvious the title song is, I like Moonchild. But then again Moonchild is a 3 minute song with 9 minutes of noise plugged on the end wtf.
