So I've been a pro a few years back but I'm totally out of the loop now. Fill me in. I need something that's:
-Fast, but not ridiculously overpowered and expensive bullshit
-Quiet!
-I want an nVidia card out of principle
GO!

What's your idea of expensive? You can build a very nice one that will last for around 3 years for around $1,200.

I guess you should go with a geforce 8 series card.
Go with an intel core duo, you do need 1 GB RAM if you're running vista, you said you're going to game for a while on it so go with 2.

You're kidding, right? Anything over $500 is expensive.
I have a video card from somewhere in 2005 or something and I still use it today. But the thing is, even in 2005, it wasn't good. At all. So I'm hoping if I buy a computer with a performance overal that is actually considered 'good' by todays standards, it will last longer and I'll be a lot more happy with it.
Well it's all relative compared to how much you make and what you're buying. If you have a good job and want a good gaming computer, $1,200 isn't THAT much.
