:lol :lol This is so ridiculous.
This is on a system with 2 GB of RAM, a good Core 2 CPU at 2.4 GHZ, and a 8800 GTS with 640 MB of RAM, no programs running in the background, the latest NVidia XP drivers, and the latest patches applied to the games.
It all looks very, very nice, even if PC games are always rougher around the edges than console games. But, for every 10-15 seconds of Bioshock, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, or Stalker action, it's bogged down by annoying stuttering.
No wonder that people are flocking to PS3 and 360 where the hardware configuration is constant, optimization is easy and there are no such problems.

Games still stutter though...
-
Your OS must be fucked or something. Stuttering used to be more common in PC games but not anymore. Stuttering is usually due to the driver problems and PC drivers are much better than they used to be, partly because there're not as many hardware manufacturers any more. Also, the 360 and PS3 actually have more stuttering problems than the Xbox1 and PS2. Perhaps, it's because they're getting more to be like PCs? lol Recent multiplatform games like Sega Rally, Bioshock, Stranglehold look and run better on the PC and yes, they stutter less on the PC as well.
-
Games still stutter though...
Sure many console games still stutter but it's not as constant or pervasive.
-
There's probably something that's causing it. Don't BS and say stupid shit like it's something related to all PCs instead of your shitty little isolated incident.

People aren't 'flocking' to PS3 and 360. Both systems are less popular than their previous iterations.
Nice to see Jotaro not making any sense at all!
You're right. Knowing Jotaro's anti-PC sentiments and penchant for bullshiting, I don't know why I even bother making a logical response to Jotaro.

Look at software sales of third party games on console versus PC, mainly 360 atm. Now the PS3 is going to be costing 399$ and will pass in many more people's hands. And within a year and an half, both the PS3 and 360 are going to be a lot cheaper, making countless more PC users give into the consoles' temptation and get either system, or both. It's going to be a devastating blow to have many technically equivalent games on consoles versus on PC that run far better on such inexpensive systems. Even Mark Rein claims that most every modern game is going to be tailored around console configurations because this is where the userbase will be, with graphical PC killer apps like Crysis being very few and far between.
Ultimately, that stake is irrelevant because last summer I simply desired a high-end PC to enjoy the few exclusives that Windows still offered, and perhaps a superior port or two once in a while.
-
Uhm, no. The PS3 is a massive failure.

Uhm, no. The PS3 is a massive failure.
It's doing well in Europe, where people are used to inflated prices of consumption goods. Third party game sales of PS3 games are very good in Europe. That thing is being sorted out in NA with the impending 399$ price point that oughts to boost software sales as well.

I'm pretty sure Ichirou was referring to the PS3 performance's in the real world, not whatever alternative universe you had in mind when responding to Ichirou's post that is based real-word facts: PS3 is tanking and so is the software.
Sony fans always like to bring up how well the PS3 is doing in Europe, which is mostly just speculation based on anecdotal evidence and not official numbers.
HHAUHAUHAHAUHAA
JOTARDO OWNED IN ALL THE HOLES

HAUHAU
:lol Where is the crying Jotaro Gif from OA? I know that Drinky posted it before.
-
Europe is not a major gaming market, so even if you weren't going off of purely anecdotal evidence, America and Japan are still where it's at for sales. The PS3 is tanking worldwide. Comparing it favorably to PCs is laughable.

What happened to this?

Not all games run as well as it.
-
I have an Athlon 4800+ x2 and an 8800GTX 768MB w/ 4GB RAM, and I have NO NO NO stutter in modern games when running 1680x1050. Mondain, you are bad at PC gaming.

The games you mention don't stutter every 10-15 secs either. Motherfucker.

so 4 GB of RAM and the best NVidia card are required to avoid stuttering at that resolution with effects maxed out? that's a bit ridiculous
-
4GB has nothing to do with it. I just added that in to remind you that you are a filthy poor.
-
sorry, I don't make good money yet like you, not until 2009-2010, then I will
even if my PC didn't cost lots of money and was all that my part time summer job could get me, it's still supposed to be a killer rig at these specs
the Windows XP SP2 build is very recent too and there's hardly a way which could make it problematic
-
What settings and resolution are you playing at? MAF and TVC have the same videocard. They can check to see if you're talking BS or telling the truth.
I play my games at 1920x1200, which is pretty demanding even for a 8800 GTX, and I've never had the stuttering every 10-15 secs with the games you mentioned. Even on my previous ATI 1900 XTX, I never had stuttering problems with Dark Messiah.
-
wow, talking BS??? why start a thread of that kind other than to sort out legitimate woes and discuss real gaming stakes?
no offense but what's more appealing to do on a Saturday night, playing an epic game of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, or replying to Smooth Groove posts? :P
-
Dude my machine is a monster, it runs the new Nancy Drew like a champ
-
I never had stuttering isues in DMoMM, either, back when I had a single 7800GTX. It ran at 1680x1050 with a stable 70-80 fps.

Neither for you. Apparently you have more fun making up crap about PC problems or how sucessful the PS3 is doing in Europe.
-
it's the fucking SOURCE engine for the love of god. it'll run on most LAPTOPS without stuttering. Mondain FAILS at PC gaming; also, he likes the xeno* games
-
it'll be fun to try The Orange Box on the rig, then

But you cant pirate that :o

More like he fails at trolling PC games. He probably got some info about PC games the way G used to do.
And about Xenosaga, even someone as cheap as Demi didn't want it when I offered it to him.
-
I think mondain works hard to see issues, and for that reason will always not only see issues, but blow them out of proportion.
-
But you cant pirate that
that whole thing might change in a close future because I'm sick of accumulating blank discs in the apartment, and a nearby video store has all the latest console releases up for rent and at dirt cheap prices when you get two
the only thing that I require is a very reliable 360 with HDMI out to counter the washed out VGA 360 output and one of the quieter BenQ drives
I have tons of EBGames credit, if the rumored Core 360 pack with a 256 MB memory card and 5 XBLA games is unveiled at the end of October and is a Falcon, and shows itself to be reliable, I might grab one
-
And about Xenosaga, even someone as cheap as Demi didn't want it when I offered it to him.
omg demi :bow :bow
-
What happened to your modded 360, Mondain? Did it get bricked by the newest firmware update?
-
Well I meant the PC version, I'm sure you can pirate the X360 version
-
both of my modded 360s still work perfectly well, mostly it's accumulating burned discs and washed out VGA video signal that I'm tired of, especially since I don't like the candy coating look of 360 games, perhaps it won't be as bad with HDMI
might sell them
-
jesus fuck. "candy coating"? a developer on GAF that works for EA explained the reason the PS3 and 360 versions' colors looked different is because of the weaker PS3 GPU.
-
Candy Coating = Looks Good and Mondain = Crazy
-
"candy coating" is simultaneously the most hilarious and most pathetic pre-emptive console hardware defense seen yet
-
Sometimes it looks good, on other occasions it's over the top and unnatural, see this DiRT comparison for example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCY-HuIeZsA
-
speaking of an "over-the-top" and "unnatural" look, how's them xenosaga games workin' out for ya
-
I would imagine "candy coating" described mondain's apologetic PS3 talk
-
I still say I love how Mondain's 'blank stare' avatar fits his insane posts.
-
yeah, i haven't heard him do anything BUT excuse the ps3's klunky hardware design
then again, what he knows about hardware could be fit into a french-canadian swimsuit with room to spare
-
the shadows and the lighting on the cars looks better in the 360 version. not that you could tell by an off-screen youtube video.

This friend of Mondain knows him best.

WTF were you talking that nonsense about how VF5 for the 360 is just a rental for you when you're still just downloading 360 games?
-
I'm lost here, he says he has two xbox360 but he wants to buy a third one? What? Doesnt he hate x360 games? What?
-
selling the two existing modded 360s with analog VGA out only to get a reliable Falcon with sharp HDMI out
I've praised at least 20 games for the system and enjoy it plentifully, got no clue what you're talking about
so, you guys have any more good ideas to help me get consistent framerates out of PC games with this rig? I'd want to play Dark Messiah soon but allright, I'm going to ask in another place and finish up Blue Dragon tonight instead
-
Hi Mondain-
If you are on Vista, see this page:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html
Also, make sure you have the latest beta nVidia drivers, they help out tons:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_163.71.html
If you play with vsync on (and you should) make sure triple buffering is enabled in the nvidia control panel by default to reduce hiccups.
One more thing-Is the hard drive going crazy when you get stutters?
-
eh, thanks, the non-beta drivers I had dated from July, perhaps it'll show a certain improvement
no, I don't think that the hard drive is going crazy when stuttering occurs
also, where exactly is that triple buffering option located in the Nvidia control panel? I'm having a few problems to find it since the NVidia software for the proprietary control panel is in french
-
In my control panel, you can set it via 3D Settings->Manage 3D Settings, then use the Global Settings tab and scroll down on the options until you get to Triple Buffering, then set it to "yes".
-
yes, found it, upon rebooting Windows the NVidia proggie prompted me to alter these settings and it was there
the new software was all in english too
now let's see if it makes a difference...
EDIT: no, the same stutters happen constantly and spoil the action
the graphics seem somewhat better to me, but for now it's not possible to play these games fluidly for some odd reason :/
-
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt once more, Jotaro.
Download Drivercleaner and Riva Tuner. They're both available on guru3d.com. Uninstall your Nvidia drivers and use Drivercleaner to wipe out everything. Then reinstall the newest drivers on Nvidia's website. They should be much newer than the July drivers that you're using. Where the hell did you get such old drivers anyway?
When you're done with the driver reinstallation, install Rivatuner. Rivatuner comes with a program called D3doverrider which allows you to force triple buffering for DX games. The control panel only controls triple buffering in Open GL games. If you still get stuttering, then you're fucked and you'll probably need a clean installation of Windows.
-
I applaud frag for trying to help, but its clear Jotaro will never learn
-
after doing all that, and leaving d3doverrider in memory, the stutters seem to happen a bit less frequently, but they're still very present and too nagging to let me enjoy the game
this installation of Windows XP is very recent and not much is installed on it, I sincerely doubt that formatting everything would improve the graphics' performance at this point... oh well
maybe I'll try it too someday... maybe a 64-bit version of XP would perform better?
-
Mondain, if you still have leftover files from your previous videocard drivers, they can cause conflicts that make your games stutter. If you had ATI hardware before, then definitely use Drivercleaner to remove all the ATI files. Stuttering is not a common occurance at all with the hardware you're using now unless you're trying to push 1920x1200 or above with high anti-aliasing levels.
I applaud frag for trying to help, but its clear Jotaro will never learn
Hey, what about me?
I have to give Frag props too for being a gentleman and a scholar. He is probably the nicest and most helpful guy here.
-
this is a brand new PC dating back from August, it never had any other kind of drivers or hardware components than those that it's using right now
-
Did you plug the power into the 8800 GTS? Many people forget to do so.
-
what, are you attempting to pull my leg? it's not enough if the card is simply installed in the PCI express slot? there's no output at the back of the card to plug a power cable into it or anything of the sort
the PC was assembled at some random shop in British Columbia with a good reputation and high quality standards, everything was definitely configured correctly
-
I'm pretty sure that you need to plug in a cable from the power supply directly to the 8800 GTS. I have a GTX but it should be the same with the GTS. If you're having stuttering problems every 10-15s with a game like Dark Messiah, then something's definitely not right with your hardware or software. That game is smooth even on a much weaker PC.
-
8800's need POWAR
-
hmmm OK, I'll probably open up the comp later tonight if I have the appropriate screwdriver
-
nope, the power cable was already plugged into the 8800 GTS
puzzling issue indeed
-
You forgot doing it or what?
