Someone help me. I have pefectly legal mkv video clips. MKV keeps multiple media streams in the file, but I want to convert it to say...MPEG4. I am willing to give up all but a single audio stream to get this accomplished. I am wondering if there are any programs for doing this. Even some of the AVI XVID files I come across are rejected by the X360 transcoding program ive found.
I realize macs and their video utilities tend to be the best for this kind of job, but I cannot afford a mac, and rubbing it in my face will do me little good. Anyone recommend some transcoding programs?

Hahaha, good fucking luck, its next to impossible to demux .mkv files.
EDIT: Ill look for what I used that works partially though.

Isn't there a way to play the file with specific media streams then record that playback with its specific streams?

Try this:

Thanks, thats a start in the right direction. Can you recommend and good all around video transcoding programs for avi n xvid?
-
Well VLC shows files but it doesnt really transcode things. Im transcoding to make the video files compatible with various pieces of hardware.
-
VLC is more of a media player then an editing tool, I believe.
Well, I use virtualdubmod for pretty much everything but batch transcoding. Problem is .wmv files don't work because of a "microsoft copyright violation" so I use a program called "winavi" for converting those.
And for making dvds I use either "NeroVision Express" or "Convert X to DVD".
.mkv I avoid like the plague though, it seems like only anime fansub groups use it, and only because they know its hard to make a DVD out of, thus stopping fansub sales on Ebay.

Maybe tmpeg or virtualdub does that shit.
-
yeah, well a few of the perfectly legal files I have are mkv, but the trend, least the higher quality ones are heading for mkv.
I dont really wanna make dvds, just turn crap to mpeg4.

Maybe tmpeg or virtualdub does that shit.
Last time I tried opening a .mkv in virtualdubmod ( a mod of virtualdub) it said that .mkv support was rather archaic and no it didnt give me the option to demux the streams.
As for tmpgenc , I think it only does .mpg and .avi. It IS very good at it though.
-
I dont have a LOT of mkv, but options are nice :)
-
Well yeah, as far as I know, there is no .MKV to DVD program out there, you have to demux the video out first.
-
dvd is mpeg4?
-
DVD's consist of .vob files

No problem, I learned everything I know from
pirating movies and making DVD's out of them for friends. Isn't life grand!

Learning is important.
