Let me start this thread by saying:
-I fucking hate Winblows XP.
-I fucking HATE MICROSOFT.
I'd like to know why this shit is slowing down FOR ABSOLUTELY FUCKING REASON. After about a few months from a Windows XP install, it starts to slow down gradually. I'm talking about loading apps and the sort. People just STFU and usually format and reinstall but I read somewhere that this has something to do with the registry. If so, what can I do to fix this?
I swear I'm having flashbacks of Windows ME with this shit. Don't tell me to defrag my system because that doesn't do shit. At least, not anything major. I want big improvements like you experience with a clean install of WINXP not some incremental shit.

I think there's something else wrong with your comp, I've never heard of XP just suddenly getting worse for no reason.
-
I usually do 2-3 fresh installs a year. Downloading/erasing/installing/uninstalling all just tears Windows apart.
-
What do you people do to your computers? I don't think I've reformatted this computer once, and I've had it for at least 2 years. I leave it on for days at a time too.
-
Probably your dad jerking off to some ladyboys

fucking download a registry cleaner, smackwit
then download and run spybot, ccleaner, and ad-aware
lastly, go to a command prompt and type "defrag"
then go cry because you fail at technology
-
NOD32

my roommate had some really insidious viruses/spyware on his XP laptop. The standard cleaning programs weren't enough, and he had to do a lot of manual bugzapping. he's a very experienced professional Windows administrator/developer and I can't imagine a "normal" person being able to accomplish what he did.

My machines are clean as a whistle and they still slow down. Of course, I transfer tens of gigs of info a month and never defrag, but I have Windows on a seperate partition, it shouldn't be affected by fragged data there.
edit: Real answer is to burn an install disc with all the programs you use, so you can reinstall windows quickly and painlessly.

Never change Ruzbeh :lol

I have Vista defrag every morning at 3am
-
what kind of year is "XP", anyway? It's not a numeral, not even a roman numeral! It's some kind of Christian propaganda or something.

Do you realize Linux never needs any defragmentation?
Because there's nothing to do on Linux

There is this (http://pauillac.inria.fr/coq/). More fun and addictive than any other 'game' I've ever played, plus its name provides endless fodder for dumb humor and/or awkwardness.
-
Linux is useless for 90% of the people who use computers lol
-
have you actually done any computer-assisted theorem proving using dependent types? don't knock it until you've tried it!
-
I'm on Windows, why are you asking me? I do other stuff besides web browsing.
-
if you don't like defragging, upgrade yer file system to ntfs, doofus. fat32 is fragmentation hell.

i somehow got into mucking about with it in a grad-level numerical methods class, at least until i realized it would lead to a lingering heat-death of the soul

Windows is fucking broken, that's why.
