Title: I break down TF2 on 360 and PC... for Cajole

After playing both, I'd recommend your initial course of action - buy the 360 version and double-dip with the PC version later.

The 360 version actually plays very well; its menu is almost identical to its PC counterpart and multiple ways to change weapons makes it relatively easy to use with the gamepad.  Is it superior to the mouse and keyboard?  Hell no, but it's not bad.  The game looks great too.  To run it 360-level visuals on a PC, you'd need a rig better than mine (mediocre), which I know is substantially better than yours.  If there's one thing Valve got right (well, Episode Two looks pretty good too) in this port, it's Team Fortress 2.

The maps max out at 16 players, which made me itching to go to 24 player maps on the PC, but I tell you what, I actually prefer 16 players after playing both.  TF2 feels really well balanced and competitive at 16 players, and more like feeding frenzy with 24 players.

The biggest gripe with the 360 version is peer-to-peer service on XBL, which led to many laggy games last night, versus dedicated servers on the PC end.  I really hadn't had a problem since and after several hilarious and awesome matches with friends, I wholeheartedly recommend TF2 on the 360 as a viable alternative if you have an underpowered PC.  The stat tracking that's on the PC is also on the 360 - really, much of nothing got watered down in the port except the way you play (peer-to-peer) and maps maxing out at 16 players (a positive, in my book).

For the long-term investment, TF2 is a no brainer on the PC.  It will have a dedicated community, free maps and a more competitive, team-oriented player based.  TF2 on the 360 is a ton of fun, though.  If you need a quick fix, it's a good buy.  And removing the comparison from its PC counterpart, it's easily one of the best multiplayer games on a console.  Hands down.

And personally, I will likely be on the 360 version for awhile... until friends and peers are bored of it, and then I will join the ravenous group of Fortress lovers on the PC-side.  Preferably after a nice hardware overhaul so I can make the 360 version look like poop!

But you do know I already bought it on PC, right? I was getting pretty close to skipping the 360 version because of the lag issues I heard about in TF2, but if it's not too bad, and enough people on here buy it, maybe I still will. I don't know anyone who's going to buy the 360 version at the moment, but I'm going to try to convince some friends.

You already bought The Orange Box or just Team Fortress 2 on the PC?  I thought you got neither, but OH WELL.  I got Team Fortress 2 on the PC, as well.  My SteamID is Willco, if you ever want to rumble.

It looks good on the Xbox 360.  Real good.  Much better than 640 x 480 and whatever stripped down image quality your rig is processing!

I guess I'm lucky in that my two best friends bought The Orange Box on Xbox 360 (and love it), and my brother will follow suit.  Combined with the thousands of folks that are dabbling on it, random Internet message board dudes and such, it has a big enough user base for me!

Good job, Cajole.  There's nothing more unsightly than a next gen game with no AA.

I got The Orange Box. I'm gonna finish up Portal tonight (I think I only have like 15 minutes left). I think I'm going to wait to play Episodes 1 and 2 until I build a new rig.

And NTSC SD resolution isn't exactly much higher than 640x480!

My 360 multiplayer game of choice this fall and winter will be COD4.

Oh, and I pretty much just stick to the NeoGAF server when I play TF2.

Barracks is a pretty well designed user made map, but most of them so far are really minimal. One was just 2 brick boxes and a big killing field with 32 players.
