Title: Would you vote for Gore?
Post by: MrAngryFace on October 12, 2007, 10:59:56 AM
If they convinced him to run, would you vote for him? I would. I already know where he stands; well away from insanity.

Al Gore? In a split second.  He would make an amazing president.

It's kind of funny, I was just reading the Nobel Peace Prize thread on GAF and there are already people smearing him (the usual suspects: ToxicAdam, APF, JayDubya, etc.). :lol

Yeah MSNBC kinda painted a bleak picture for previous nobel winners running for president soon after, but I dont think there's ever been this many bad choices for president.

Yes, without hesitation.  I don't get the Nobel Peace Prize thing though.... wtf does popularizing the science of global warming have to do with "... work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses"?  Crazy Swedes!

yeah, but I thought I was among a sophisticated crowd that already knew that, and therefore free to use it as a stock trope in a half-meta way

I should have voted for him 2000.  I did not vote.  I was away in college and too lazy to send an absentee ballot.  Now that I think about, it would not matter due to the craptastic electoral college system and the Supreme Court.

WA will always vote dem, so my vote doesnt actually matter. I was shocked to discover Florida's mattered more than WA's tho.

Yeah.

I've been in the tank for Al ever since I saw this video. (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-29385328971143264)  It's heartwarming!

Part of his new, bold persona comes from not having to run for office and suck up to the electorate, and if he were president, he'd still be constrained by Congress, popular opinion, etc.  Still, he seems like a decent guy who Gets It.

Yeah, I'd vote for Gore if he magically became the democratic front runner.

Would I? Yes. But he isn't running. Hillary is who I will end up voting for in the general whether I like it or not seeing how I could never vote Rudy or Romney.

Pretty much.

I would LOVE for Obama to get it, but it's not going to happen. I guess I will be voting for Hillary.

Their examples were pretty bad, especially Teddy. He ran has a third party candidate and split the republican party lol. That was beyond a "special" event, which is not comparable to Gore getting in the race now.

I'd vote for Gore in a heart beat. While I agree with Hillary on many foreign policy matters, I don't want to be forced to vote for her. I'm still hoping that Obama will catch the holy ghost and grow some balls, and that Edwards will shave his head, roll up his sleeves, and be a god damn man. Both scenarios are unlikely, thus a vote for Hillary makes more sense - especially considering she's infinitely less scary than Guiliani.

Who do you vote for?

Neither.  I wouldn't vote.

I could probably vote for Gore if he were going as an independent or something.  I still think the DNC tentacles in Gore are what made him unelectable in 2000, so if he were running Democrat again, there's a good chance I'd get turned off.

didn't you go through a libertarian phase in the not too distant past?  or was that an ironic pose?  what's up with you and Camille Paglia?  you made an appropriately dismissive remark about her recently, but I remember you were a fan at one point.  or am I mixing up different posters?
Title: Re: Would you vote for Gore?
Post by: TVC15 on October 12, 2007, 04:50:27 PM
I still largely identify as a libertarian.  That's what I would say if I had to describe my political stance in 5 seconds and copuldn't get into detail.  My opinion differs on some issues.  Nothing is ever clean cut.  I'd lean minarchist on some things, but I acknowledge the importance of government intervention when it comes to food and drug quality (though I think the current FDA is busted and needs to be broken down) and a certain degree of law enforcement.

Putting ideals aside, I think both a well-formed, thought through libertarian, capitalist, or socialist society could work with some degree of success.  My tendencies just lead me to prefer the libertarian side of things.  America tries to do too many things, and in my opinion fails at doing most of them in a satisfying manner.

Camille Paglia. . .I guess it could be characterized as a love hate relationship, but it's far more of a love thing.  Her ideas are usually well-formed, but we have some basic philosophical differences; for example, I love the French post-structuralist, while she's not a fan at all.  As a matter of fact, I probably disagree with her on more things than I agree, though we both have particularly fluid political stances that can track between two extremes; an acknowledgement that there's not only one logical politcal way to think, just personal preferences, really.  There could be an insane libertarian, but a totally rational conservative, and in such a choice, I'd side with rationality over personal preference, and for most things so would Paglia.  I guess I love her because she's one of the last of the old school intellectuals.  Oddly enough, most of the ones that are still around are particularly polarizing.  See also her buddy, Harold Bloom.

So yes, I'm a fan, oddly because I largely find disagreeing with her very agreeable.

Oh, I know why, it just floors me seeing Ron Paul shit all over my beautiful liberal city.

It's funny, two of my really good friends are Libertarians, yet they think Ron Paul is a fucking nutjob.

On tuesday night, after my last class I was walking out of the college and I passed the performance and visual arts center where I saw these huge signs saying "california4gore.org" and all these old people talking about gore so I go to this woman at this booth in front of the theater and ask what's going on.  she says here or in there and I say "...in there?" and she says al gore's speaking.  I say "oh, what's going on here?" and she says that if I sign a pledge to use special light bulbs, they might get the law changed to require them so I say ok, gore's not running fore president so I put down my name and information and hope they don't send too much spam.  I start to walk away and then she wait, and hands me a bag with a light bulb.

so basically I got a light bulb.
