Title: hey PC d00dz... is my laptop fit for gaming?
Post by: hyp on October 12, 2007, 04:26:19 PM
i just realized that my laptop has pretty decent specs (was used for business but now it's pretty much a $2000 web browser) and since i'm so out of the PC loop i was wondering if these specs are worthy of gaming:

 - HP Pavilion dv6000t CTO NB
 - Genuine Windows Vista Business
 - Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
 - 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
 - 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
 - 2048MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
 - 80GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
 - 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
 - 802.11b/g WLAN

you think i'd get decent framerates on the latest releases?  i'm looking at orange box right now and some of the new steam releases.

orange box, yes. the 7400 Go is ROUGHLY equivalent to a desktop 9700 (but with better shader support/performance) or a GeForce 5750 for frame rates.

thanks dudes.  i never considered using it for gaming, but since it's not being used for business anymore i might as well put some miles on it.

Orange Box should work great on that labtop.  COD4 or UT3 are probably too much for that labtop's GPU though.

Tell us what kind of games you like so that we can give you more recommendations.

i'll take any recommendations in the last 2 years.  i'm pretty eclectic about my taste in games so i'll play practically anything.  just keep in mind my system specs.  as much as i'd like to play gears of war or UT3 on PC, it'll be a shitfest on my laptop.  thanks again.

Pretty much any strategy game out there save Supreme Commander will run good on that laptop at medium-ish settings or better. Heck, even SupCom might be fine on it if you dial some stuff down.

It will play some of the newer FPS games, definitely Orange Box for sure, and probably wouldn't choke down too bad on Battlefield 2, which is like $10 now.

It probably wouldn't run with great settings, but that could probably passably run UT3, at least if UE3 on PC is as insanely scalable as the past iterations of UT.  I've heard that it is, but I guess now that the demo's out, it's time to see exactly how scalable it is.

i'm gonna give AOE3 and company of heroes a try.  i could never get good at civ games so i'll be staying far away from that.  in addition to a bunch of steam games, i'm gonna be busy this weekend.  :)
