Honestly, Peter O'Toole and Malcolm McDowell are total professionals. From what I have seen so far, they're doing as well as they probably could have with such totally bizarre material. The movie is so absurd that it's like, nearly dreamlike or something. I really can't fucking believe this thing exists!

The movie feels insanely disjointed, and some scenes are either kinda out of place, totally half-baked, or ????, and there is random like, porno quality sex, particularly with hot lesbian action, but this could have been like, actually a quality movie if it had a production that wasn't backed by, you know, Penthouse. Malcolm McDowell makes the movie kind of fascinating to watch. He gets hammy, but that kind of makes things fun. This movie is pretty god damned ridiculous, but it's not a terrible viewing. It is kind of shocking, even going in prepared. Have to give it some credit for that.

If I had to cite a major, objective flaw, it's that Caligula goes from kind of normal to completely insane with no transition whatsoever. Having him start out "normal," I can only guess that one of the original intentions of the script was to show why he went crazy. That probably became secondary in favor of, you know, fisting, analingus, that bizarre decapitating machine, and lots of muff diving and cocks.

Salo isn't a bad movie. Unlike Caligula, it isn't disjointed, and it has a point, especially if one is familiar with the body of themes that Pasolini's dabbled in. Again, not for everyone. Like Caligula, it does sort of have that Fellini-esque uncomfortablenes going on, but Pasolini did work with Fellini, allegedly even being the actual director of his first movie.

It has its fair share of gender and orientation bending, particularly during the films like 3-4 orgy scenes, but none of it is really the focus of things. I'd imagine that was sort of the edge of what they could get away with when the movie was made.

I never really sought it out because I was expecting something non-entertaining, and just terrible. I have had access to edited cuts, but I figured what's the point? Despite, uh, praising the movie now, I think seeing it with its more lascivious scenes would have been a mistake.

But seriously, the particular lesbian scene. I knew what I was getting into with the movie, but I still didn't expect it to degenerate into serious, porno-quality action. I knew there was lots of nudity and unsimulated sex, but I don't think I expected it to be the main focus of scenes and what not. Like, during the lesbian scene to which I am referring, you see like, motherfucking lots of clit. They are showing the god-damned clit off. I mean, this cunnilingus was practically fellatio here. It was completely ridiculous what they were doing to each other!

I'm not saying it's true either. If it were a case like that, I am sure it would be more well known than regulated to rumors. That said, Accattone is better than anything Fellini ever did!

In that case, then yes, Salo is probably the worse of the two, since just about everything in that is not the good kind of naughty. In Caligula, some, maybe even most, of the sex is not rape or forced or anything. Caligula would probably win for sheer nudity volume, though.

Dude. . . good luck. I saw it stated that she was in an orgy scene. You think that would make this easy, but there are three, THREE full on orgies in this movie, the smallest one with maybe 15-20 people involved. And then there comes the problem of drawing the distinction between group sex and orgy. There might be another potential scene or two she could be in.

And I'm not sure my moral fiber could take another Caligula viewing this weekend. I feel like putting on another layer of clothes in memory of those poor extras every time I think of the movie.
