Title: Am I the lone sports gamer here?
Post by: bdoughty on October 14, 2007, 08:21:10 PM
Looked through the last 5 pages of threads and only noticed one sports game thread.

Current playlist for what it is worth

Madden 08 - Still waiting on the fumble patch, actual NFL presentation, actual ESPN presentation, all the little things that have been in the current gen game for tears.
NCAA 08 - It is better than Madden but still lifeless and missing a ton of little things from the current gen game.
APF2K8 - Best football game of the batch, unfortunately far too shallow and should never have been retailed at $59.99.
NBA 2K8 - Best Basketball game until CK2K8 arrives.
NHL 08 - No need for 2K Hockey with this game.
Fifa 08 - Getting better each year - watch out Seabass.
Tiger Woods 08 - Crappy in more ways than usual.

I dabble in Madden 08 from time to time. I primarily watch the season more than I play Madden, oh and Fifa is awesome too but I play with family members (lol hispanics)

I have never bought a sports game in my life.  I do have a demo of fight night 3 and madden 0X that I keep around for casual multiplayer gaming whenever friends come over.

You didn't buy MLB Power Pros. You fail.

Well, the last 'real' sports game I enjoyed was NBA Jam and Ken Griffey Jr. something or other for SNES. There was one hockey game on there that was pretty fun too, though I can't remember what it is.

My sports gaming died with the Dreamcast.

(Because I bought a Gamecube)

I only play arcadey sports games... Virtua Tennis 2 was probably the last sports game I bought. Actually I just d/led the NHL '08 demo for 360, I was just about to go play that. The old NHL games for Genesis were the best.

I play sports games, but I'm not the type of sports gamer that buys yearly installments.  I normally buy at least 1 each NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB and Soccer each generation.  Normally 2 of the NFL and NBA. I buy them, play seasons and tweak my teams roster to match each year.

not a big fan here

Ive played the odd baseball or hockey game at a friends but I have no interest in buying sport games
I also avoid racing/rally games. Clearly they sell pretty well but its the casual market imo

I thought about getting Madden 07 for the 360 since you can get it for $10 used - maybe a basketball game, too, but I don't know which ones would be any good

just so you know, 07's online support would end by the time 09 comes out.  that's the reason they drop in price so much in a couple years.

Well, it's only 10 bucks, if I hate it I haven't lost much

What's a good/fun current(ish)basketball game for someone who doesn't care about keeping up with rosters and shit?

Sports games are for people with social lives, sorry

I was once heavy into other games. Fortunately my Gaming/Real Life ADD has cured that ill. The 360 game demos are an amazing thing. By the time I am done with a demo, I am pretty much bored of the game.

For the other poster, no Power pros because I only have a 360. Blame gets shifted to Konami, 2Ksports for not letting us play it.

If you do not care about rosters NBA or CH 2K7 would be a cheap pickup now that 2K8 is out. NBA Homecourt is $29.99 nowadays and you might enjoy it. The game is a bit heavy on knocking people over and blocking shots.

Avoid Madden 07 like the plague, it was absolute crap. APF2K8 is $29.99 now and if the NFL license is not a big deal would be a good game for you.

It was until the realization set in that Bam Margera, Jason Lee and Tom Green were considered Pro Skaters. Now it is one of the bastard children under the blanket of "extreme sports." Outcasts in a group of outcasts.

i would probably get condemned for saying this on "other" message boards, but i was pretty impressed with the NBA Live '08 demo.  i really enjoy the 2K series, but the polish of NBA '08 has got me interested in the series again.  i bought '06 at launch and although it was atrocious in the technical department, i saw the potential.  seems like '08 was what they were aiming for when they brought NBA Live to next gen.

I know that, hence he was listed above. He was also in Chasing Amy with Ben Affleck, some people consider that a good film. I guess because they were big fans of Kevin Smith and blinded by the lesbian scenes in the movie, along with the twisted sexual adventures of "Fingercuffs".  See how that works. You can be an actor a pro skater or even a director. That alone does not make you good at your profession and deserving of being called a professional.

Your Welcome,

NBA Live 08 reminds me of NHL 07.  Lots of potential but to many issues to deserve a purchase.  The ball just does not hit the ground that many times when a shot is missed. Also many of the people who bought the game are complaining about the lack of defense and the CPU controlled point guards score far too many points.

NBA Live 09 should be interesting, especially if they put some effort in the international team (FIBA) aspect of the game.

Oh, I got what you said, but it still didn't make much sense. Jason Lee was an actual professional skater back in the late 80s and 90s, I don't see what's so offensive about including him in a video game.

Possibly because I never once mentioned that having any of those people in a video game as being offensive. To be honest it is actually fitting. I was referring to what defines an actual sport, which skating is not really a sports but more of an extreme sport. Even in the video game world it has a pretty universal separate category of "Extreme" under the sports genre.

OP - Is skate a sports game?
ME - Explains that it is an extreme sport and makes fun of a few of it's "professionals."
YOU - ()*&#)$&)u()u)$(*^%^$&%^*  I will completely misunderstand what you wrote - therefore you are a douche.
ME - It's like being back at NeoGAF. Let me explain myself and make fun of Ben Affleck at the same time. When do you guys change my screen name?

I played for about 10 minutes on the kiosk at Gamestop.  Really buggy and easily the worst looking animations of the batch. I have always liked the concept of a shot meter but they still have some work to do with it.

Don't be so jumpy, dude.  People here are cool.  To be honest, I didn't understand what you meant when you mentioned Bam Margera, Jason Leet, etc., in your original post either.  It seemed to mean that skating was a legitimate sport until those guys started calling themselves pros.

I'll be giving Live 08 a tryout soon as I'm kind of tired of 2k's system and pacing. I wish they made basketball sims more rewarding for team play rather than continually adding to the one on one game.

NCAA 08 is all right, the presentation feels really blah coming over from NCAA PS2 last year. There's a lot of really stupid fumbles in the game, but they get over turned more often than on Madden. Turnovers in general happen way to much. I played a dynasty season as SJSU and my 90 something rated corner lead the country in INTs. Meanwhile my QB was first in the country in passer rating (although I think I was playing on default difficulty).

I will say this, I love the ability to save highlights. Madden needs the highlight thing from NCAA so bad.

I liked the NBA Street series.  It felt like the proper successor to the NBA Jam series which I loved.  Most major sport games are too complex these days for me to get into.

Here are some of the my favorites.
Arch Rivals
Super Dogde Ball
RBI Baseball (NES)
Baseball Stars 2
Blitz series
Daytona (Motorsports?)
Virtua Tennis
Mario Tennis series
MinGol series

I can't stand EA's offerings.  The only exception being their NBA Street series.
