Hack total. One note director, if even that.
Also, please tell me that nobody likes Alfred Hitchcock either. What's with his obsession with suspense?
-
If you had really wanted to hurt TVC, you would have made this thread about David Lynch.
-
I thought this was a ploy to get Solo to come back.
-

You can't reasonably make that claim about Lynch, though. For fucks sakes, he made a G rated movie about a guy driving around on a tractor. Dude's got range.
Besides, TVC doesn't hate Wes Anderson. He hates all the people who like Wes Anderson. He's just like that.

Hitchcock is quickly becoming my favorite director.
Rear Window: 10/10
Psycho: 10/10
Strangers on a Train: 9.5/10
Rope: 9.5/10
Dial M for Murder: 9/10
The Birds: 6/10

PD is becoming wise. :bow

Last month in class my teacher was talking about Amistad, and eventually the movie came out. I was basically the only person who had seen it, but when he asked "who is your favorite director, out of interest" nearly everyone just said Spielberg or "uhh the Star Wars guy". :-\
Goodfellas: 10/10
Taxi Driver: 10/10
The Departed: 9/10
The Aviator: 8.5/10
Casino: 7.5/10
Cape Fear: 7/10
-
Amistad sucked. Check your PMs and reply, I gotta go to bed soon.
-
I like Rushmore, for the record. Moreso his other films, but even that feels like a calculated attempt to get reviewers to call him quirky.
Also, Hitchcock isn't just a great director because he made great suspense movies, although that's helped him retain a large fanbase over the years. Much like Orson Welles, who has only managed to keep a fanbase of the hardcore and critics, really, Hitchcock was a cinema pioneer for the majority of his career; like Welles pioneering many things that are so taken for granted today that we really don't attribute them as Hitchcock popularizations. Unlike Welles, though, Hitchcock tended to make movies that were interesting to people other than critics.
I admire a lot of Scorsese's work, but nobody will ever deny that his first decade or so was substantially greater than anything that came after. I'm not as much an expert on the dude's body of work (although I watched Taxi Driver every day for like 3 years lol), but you really can't float the idea that the man that made Taxi Driver, After Hours, and The Last Temptation of Christ was a one note director. Marty has his tendencies, and sometimes he has tried to capture the same movie twice, but duder has had long as career with ups and downs, so I really think that on a long timeline, that's not as bad a crime as what Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola do.
Btw, Wes Anderson >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sofia Coppola.
-
What are some things Hitchcock pioneered?
-
On a pure technical level, a few things come to mind - the special zoom he used in Vertigo is really famous. Shooting a movie in what appears to be a single take in Rope was a failed experiment, but really interesting. He shot movies that took place on just one stage yet made them interesting (Lifeboat).

And neither of you two dudes has seen Shadow of a Doubt. For shame.

I loved Rope lol. The dialogue may be too theatrical for some but everything about the film had me on the edge of my seat. It's very strange: it shows you who commits the crime in the first 4 minutes, but the suspense builds because they could be caught at any time AND you don't know whether Stewart's character is going to side with them :P

Is that one of his british era films? I tend to find those ones kinda meh.

Ooo its a 40's one. I was worried it was a 30's film. He was a meh director in the 30's.
-
The ending is a little half-baked, you could tell Hitchcock wanted the murderer to get away with it but had to subscribe to the standards and practices of the era.
-
For some reason I always felt Hitchock could have been a fantastic director for Jaws
-
The Man Who Knew Too Much sorta sucked. Doris Day ruined it.
I love Doris Day. :-\
Also I know that Man Who Knew Too Much is one of TVC's favorite hitchcock's iirc.
Close, The 39 Steps. . . probably. They are both "mistaken identity" movies, so I can see the mistake.
Hitchcock does have the tendency to have that effect where your favorite movie is whatever you happen to be watching at the time, but I haven't seen either version of The Man Who Knew Too Much in (I believe) a pretty long time, so I am not sure if I would have called it out in the recent past.
-
I thought this was a ploy to get Solo to come back.
You rang? It musta worked!
Wes Andersons movie are garbage though. PT is the only Anderson I need to know.

That was in big list format. I haven't seen it in years, I think. I am a fan of the mistaken identity subset of his movies though, so I guess it makes sense that I'd list it if picking a handful of favorites.
I just thought by singling it out, you were indicating I gushed about it somewhere. My bad.
-
A lot of his movies are basically about the same material (goodfellas, casino, the departed) and a lot of them are based on the another person's book, or in the departed's case a 3 year old movie. He's not bad, except for the departed since too much was cut out of that movie for it to make sense as a remake, but I would never put him in my top 5.
-
I still haven't seen The Departed. I do have it on Blu Ray, tho. I need to pop that in. I need to be in the right mood for that sort of thing.
-
I'm not crazy about Scorcese, but that has more to do with my beef against gangster films in general. I'm saving that rant for a rainy day.
-
At least he is good at things other than gangster movies, though.

He has some damn good non gangster films. After Hours, The Last Temptation of Christ, The King of Comedy, The Aviator...
-
No, but i do think Christopher Nolan is a fucking genius.
-
I like Christopher Nolan quite a bit, but the Christ-like status people view him with is kind of embarassing.
-
Christopher Nolan is a gateway "real" director for Spielberg/Lucas movie nerds which is why he gets so much praise amongst interneters.
-
same with Fincher.
-
I dunno what's going on with Fincher. I liked Zodiac, but between Fight Club and it, he's definitely dramatically changed, and I'm not quite sure if it's for the better. Zodiac might (might) be his overall best movie, but for the first time, he's made a very derivative movie. I kinda miss the flashy, music video-inspired Fincher that would seemingly only tackle really unconventional movies. Panic Room is kind of the halfway point in his transition. It's high concept, but not so thoughtful or original in its execution.
-
You guys* are forgetting Lifeboat. It's awesome.
*Well, everyone except Ichirou
-
Se7en is Fincher's best movie. Although, that probably has more to do with the writer, Andrew Kevin Walker.

Not counting Insomnia, Christopher Nolan is alright too

Scorsese has done plenty of brilliant non-gangster work - Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Age of Innocence, Last Temptation of Christ, After Hours...he's like the farthest thing from a one-note director. He's only done a handful of gangster films (Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed), so it's kinda sad that's the main thing he's known for.
You guys* are forgetting Lifeboat. It's awesome.
*Well, everyone except Ichirou
Incredibly innovative movie. :heartbeat
My favorite is still Rope, even though it's really flawed in terms of casting (as soon as I saw the behind-the-scenes feature that talked about how Hitchcock wanted Cary Grant, I realized what he was trying to do and I think he would've been more appropriate than Stewart in the professor role).
Insomnia is a good movie wtf
The original is a LOT better. Robin Williams and Hilary Swank really ruin that movie. Pacino knocks it out of the park, tho, and the cinematography (especially the opening sequence showing the Alaskan wilderness as seen by...helicopter, I think) is quite beautiful.
-
You didn't like Williams? I can understand hating on Swank out of general principle, but Williams was brilliant. Definitely one of his better roles
-
I thought he overacted way too much. You want a good creepy Williams performance, go see One Hour Photo.

I've heard GREAT things about Age of Innocence but period piece romantic drama stuff sounds boring but I always have been *this* close to giving it a chance. Convince me!

he fucking deserved that oscar he got for it that year.
too bad he doesn't do stuff like that anymore :'(

Jim Carrey was in Eternal Sunshine, and his performance was good.
He was also in the Truman Show. WHY DON'T PEOPLE USE HIM LIKE THEY DID IN THESE FILMS?
None of this "number 23" bullshit or give away comedies like Bruce sucks a fucking dick Almighty?
-
eh. eternal sunshine could've been done by other actors. I hated the truman Show (though i did appreciate the concept).
True on Eternal Sunshine. Both the leads were definitely not optimum for the movie. All things considered, they did well, but Carrey especially was kind of not thoroughly convincing.
I do like the movie, mind you.
-
I like Kate Winslet's character (it's so rare to see a not "perfect" woman in this sort of thing), but her portrayal often veers into the annoying. Maybe that is realistic and it's supposed to be an aspect of her character, but it kind of makes the movie not very pleasant to watch.
-

I think that's the point.
I cringe on certain parts of the movie that emphasize her character's flaws. But it makes me appreciate the movie even more.
-
it skips too much of the how we got here stuff to really make either of the characters compelling. Both actors do hold their own with what they are given, but I'm of the mind that you could swap out any number of actors in their roles and end up at the same place.
I agree.
there's no real meat to their relationship because you never actually get to see it develop, so you're kind of just thrown in there at the beginning and you're expected to care for the main characters.
However, I still love it. It's probably my favorite movie.
-
ewww Robin Williams. Throw him in the shit/bin along with Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, and anybody else who "improvises."
Hey now, there are good improvisers out there. David Cross in particular, but a lot of the cast of AD improvised stuff.
