I don't see anything I can parse as a joke. Am I missing something? Am I too white to get this sort of humor?

Sometimes Curtis has random preachy moments where they talk about the modern America and all of that. I don't think the author really did it too well here.

1) Curtis buys a profane CD by some ridiculously named rapper whom Curtis idolizes. His dad is nonplussed.

2) Michelle does something shallow and undignified in her pursuit of R&B stardom. Curtis is nonplussed.

It's not funny to you because you don't know the characters. Cindy is the type of white person who believes EVERYTHING she sees on tv. When Huey and Riley first moved to Woodcrest, she asks them,"Are you good at basketball?" So because Cindy sees every single thing on tv, it's hilarious that she's trying to do that WAZZUP shit.

At least, I think it's hilarious.

And yeah, Curtis and his music is one of the biggest ones.

It's an exception. Curtis comics are preachy but they usually have a punchline. This one just seems to be a miss.

It was always positive, and I'm not sure if those always had a punchline. Yearning about the glamour years of old, before it became crass, etc.

Also, Michelle used to just be "girl who Curtis had a crush on," like Jenny in Big Nate. Then some time in the last decade, they added "...who wants to be famous and is stuck up about it" to her character.

I'm pretty sure this happened before FBOFW introduced April's band and her friend the successful, touring bitch, but the angles are pretty similar. Both show the authors have no clue how the entertainment industry works, for one.

edit: I'm guessing TVC came to Curtis through the Curmudgeon. When it was running in the WashPost and the Montgomery Journal, I essentially read it on a daily basis for a decade. This is what I have taking up space in my brain.
