Poundin' out 80s hits and Top Gun tracks, while twistin' and turnin' in silky smooth XBL online play is like sexual magic!
-
Post some pics of your 2 faceplates. And let us know how well the flightstick works.
-
Phone is dead, so I'll post some pics tomorrow. I changed my gamerpic/theme (the first since BioShock!) for this monumental occasion.
The flight stick (from HORI!) controls pretty great, although it takes some getting used to. I really suck online; it feels like veterans have been playing this for ages despite that it just came out today. I think I must be missing something obvious that I may need to go through tutorials for.
-
post pics of the flight stick plz willco :bow
-
do you actually control better with the flight stick? it seems like it would be harder since you have to move your arm.

To me, a flightstick for Ace Combat is like a steering wheel for Forza 2- it just makes sense on so many levels. Oh, and it does control better. Just put the viewpoint into first person for best results. :-*
-
that's a pretty extreme comparison. I'll have to find a way to try this stick.

Assuming it is a decent stick (and it's from Hori based off a Saitek design, so I don't see why it wouldn't be), the added precision over a gamepad would be invaluable, assuming that my PC flight sim experiences translate over properly to AC6.
-
Frag, have you tried Blazing Angels 2 on the PC? It's been getting pretty decent reviews. Hardcore flight simmers will probably thump their noses at it but I think games like Crimson Skies are pretty fun.
-
I don't know if Frag would care for Blazing Angels 2 or Ace Combat 6. Neither are really simulators, with the former definitely in Crimson Skies territory and the latter being a streamlined arcade combat game dressed up as something fancier. Ace Combat controls great, though.
-
ace combat has realistic plane physics. the weapons are arcadey though.
-
I got a 16-player game going tonight and it was a ton of fun and - tada! - I actually shot down folks. My instrument of death is the F-14D, I seem to handle that one the best.
My best run was when I was blastin' DANGER ZONE; I ran through the opposing team's defense and took out three enemy ships in a row. The only thing that sucked was that the last missile hit one of the opposing team's craft after the match clock ended, and although I was credited for the kill on-screen, it did not impact our team score. Bah!
Game rocks!

Are they like anything from AC4? Becuase the physics in that game feel like an arcade game compared to a modern jet sim like Falcon 4.0 AF.
I find games like Crimson Skies, Secret Weapons over Normandy, and the like to be fun, depending on how good the mission design is. I have been meaning to play the Blazing Angels games but there's always something better out there. Or I just go back and play Freespace 2, the game of now and forever, over again instead-it's basically a WW2 setting extrapolated into space.
-
never played AC4. the physics are arcadey I guess since the planes are really easy to pilot but you seem to go at realistic speeds and stall when you normally should stall. I really like how when you do a dive straight down, your wings are still generating lift so you start moving forward.
-
AC is arcadey, it has never ever approached anything resembling a simulation.
-
it's a lot different than blazing angels though.

wtf guys, Ace Combat IS realism.

wtf guys, Ace Combat IS realism.
A flight game is only truly realistic when you realize that the three ring binder you took from surplus at work to store the manual in isn't going to be nearly big enough to hold the printed manual, and you go back and get the biggest one you can find. :)

wut?

My friend used Flight Simulator to practice before becoming a career pilot. He claimed that it was pretty helpful. Funny also that Frag mentioned Freespace 2 because my friend loved that game too.
-
Ace Combat 6 is fun. I'm keeping the controls on novice. Mock me all you want, but I can't reconcile the arcadey gameplay with controls that claim to be more similar to flying a plane. If I had the flight stick, sure, but I sincerely doubt that the advanced controls on a dozen button control in any way resemble plane controls. You put arcadey gameplay on the screen, gimme arcadey controls.
Also, holy shit, arcade flight sims really haven't evolved at all since they went 3d, have they? I didn't play any of the PS2 Ace Combats, but I was able to jump into this one like I didn't miss a beat.
And the game is really pretty. Until you get near the ground and then you see the ground only looks hot and sexy from the distance. Unfortunately, being an arcadey game, you find yourself near the ground sometimes. I like how they've half-assedly put up a few trees on the ugh up close ground, as if that makes up for pulling back the curtain and seeing what the Wizard really is.
That's a nitpick, though. Game looks hot. Game plays fun. It's what I expected. And I feel guilty for kind of liking the cut scenes even if some of the voice acting is pretty lousy. It's an Animu War is Bad plot, but I haven't been expsed to one in a while.
Good job, Namco!
-
Normal controls aren't really simulator at all, nor are they pretending to be - it's just giving you more control over the craft than you would with Novice. And that really comes in handy online, because you'll need every instrument you can get to move your plane.
-
This game is RIDICULOUS looking. How the hell did namco do it?
-
Hey, does anyone want to do the co-op missions? :-*
